Question Back Door Battery Switch on X51v

Several times my X51v complains that the back door battery switch has been opened. Each time I look at it, it appears to be in the locked position. I have tried pushing it further to the locked position, but I don't think it moves. Is there an easy fix for this?

There are several fixes,

Tape on the feet of the switch to make them longer
Nail polish for the same effect.

And surgery on the battery switch itself which requires the Axim to be opened up and some miniature soldering to be done.

I elected the surgery route since I already had my x51v apart for something else. Successful battery latch operation on my Dell Axim x51v PDA

Just a little disclaimer here. I have over 22 years experience soldering, so this was no big deal for me. You don't need that much experience, but you DO need to know what you're doing if you're going to tear your Axim apart and solder in it.

Axim x51 will not turn on

I have been having problems with the battery latch in the past. Any time I would put it in its cradle it would go into sleep mode. So I started hotsyncing with bluetooth. This time I think it went into sleep mode, but it will not turn on at all. I tried all the suggestions minus the sodering of the pressure switch. Ive tried hard and soft resets with no result. I wouldn't even care if I lost all my files as long as it comes back on.

Thanks

I already did the surgery ahead of time, I dont have quite the experience srvtec has, but still have about 8 years soldering under my belt. Should be easy enough as long as you don't bridge any connections.

Mine seems to be getting worse over time. It acts like the door is maybe 'wearing out' somehow. I have to add another layer of tape every month or two to get it to work for a while. I have a new battery coming and a new door. Lets see how that works. if not then the surgery is next!

Worried door latch

is it the door thats wearing or the switch itself? I was just wondering if ordering a new door would fix the problem. Mine just started doing the same thing.

I did a little fix similar to the one where people were placing small bits of paper or other material under the foot to keep the switch engaged.

I took a piece of wire from a twist tie like you get on a loaf of bread and trimmed it down to fit snugly into the small hole on the foot. I then cut the tie of just less than flush level with the surface of the foot so there was just a small bit sticking out. It give just enough pressure on the switch to keep it engaged but not so much that you actually have a problem keeping the latch closed.

Only problem I see with this is that it's metal and if that gets loose and goes inside of your PDA, it may short things out and the battery latch problem will be the least of your worries.

That's part of the reason I used a twist tie for it. It's plastic covered and you have to trim the plastic "wings" on the sides in order to make it fit. Don't trim off too much, it allows there to be a very tight fit into the small hole on the foot. You could also apply a small dab of epoxy type glue in the hole to secure it even further.

edit: Relooking at my original post, I guess I didn't really explain it too well.
