Battery fell out - data lost

My PDA fell out of my pocket and the battery came loose. I replaced it but I had a shock when the screen said press a key to clear all data. When I rejected this option the machine just froze with the Dell logo ghosted out. I though this machine had some capacity to not loose data so easily. I had not backed up for a month.:realmad:

Was the pda on when the battery came out? Did you try a soft reset?

It normally won't lose data "so easily". I think under the circumstances of dropping the device with the battery coming out, all bets are off as to what might have happened internally with any number of components or cables. Just the fact the battery came out may be enough to cause problems.

Did you actually lose any data?

The Axim can only sustain so much shock... I think even flash memory has a maximum shock "rate" (it's a lot higher than conventional hard drives).

"press a key to clear all data"

Did it specifically say "To clear all data in the memory, press [the calendar button]. To cancel the operation, press [the message button]"?

Or did it look like this: http://help.softwaremotif.com/emrpoc...s/DSC_0002.JPG.

The machine works fine as I had to reset it and take a month old back-up. This is not the first time this has happened. Once the battery fell out in my bag (loose cover) and the same thing occurred. I would have thought the machine more robust than this.

The X50 series does not have persistent main memory. Hence, when the battery is completely discharged (or falls out) the backup capacitor will hold the memory for a few minutes in normal use. However, those capacitors are known to age and lose capacity, reducing useful time to seconds or even zero. Depending on how long the battery was out, you lost all memory because the backup went to zero.

The X51 series has persistent main memory, so this kind of memory loss is not so prevalent.
