I have been the proud owner of a Dell Axim x51v (WM5 ROM A12) for some years. It has been a fantastic PDA but now it has become a problem. I hope some of you guys can help me out on this. I’m a physician and pretty dependent on my PDA on a daily basis.
Some weeks ago 2 problems started.
1. The error message “battery latch open” began and the PDA turned off. This happened again and again. That problem I have fixed.
2. Almost parallel to this I experienced a screen problem with a graphics issue. Sometimes the top and bottom "bands" on the screen will not display properly and other times the icons on the drop down menu's don't display properly (unreadable), often these 2 screenproblems coexists. When I start up programs ex SkyScape Medical Books the text/graphics don’t display properly as well. But as for the other issues the problem is intermittent/randomly.
In the beginning I tried Hard-Reset and most of the times the Dell graphic looked fine again, but someimes it doesn’t correct the problem.
I don’t believe that LCD (hardware) is the problem, because it will sometimes start up showing normal graphics. Since HardReset couldn’t correct the problem I tried upgrading to Dell Axim x51v WM6 A03 (Football Edition), which is working OK but the bug stayed. Still a graphics problem.
I have of course removed and formatted my memory cards and didn’t use the Data Backup program as a measure to prevent the problem being carried further on.
Besides the graphics problem my Dell x51v is working OK, but because of the nature of the problem it is a problem.
I have attached a couple of screenshot pics of the graphics problem I’m facing.
I hope there is a solution for this problem, as it would be sad to give up on my Dell x51v.
Wow - Three years here and this is your first post. :)
Do you have a screen protector on? If so, make sure it's not under any of the edges.
If you don't have a screen protector on you'll want to make sure nothing is under any of the edges. This can cause distortions on your screen. You can use a business card to work around the edges of the screen to pull out any debris.

Just an observation, but what strikes me as odd about the symptoms is that the distortion is so specifically located. In particular, the icons of the start menu. One would think if it were a hardware issue, it would go completely across the screen like it does in the title bar at the top. It sounds like you've ruled out software by doing a hard reset, so I don't know what else it could be other than the graphics area of the mother board. Maybe there is a ribbon cable or other connector that needs reseated. Resecuring plugs on circuit boards will take care of a lot of mysterious problems, at least in my 20+ years of experience working in the electronics field. Of course to do this, you would have to get access to the inside of your PDA.
BTW, great first post after 3 years.

Are your screen shots straight after a hard reset with nothing else installed?
I see in both that you have a notification, is the Ax trying to tell you something interesting or is it irrelevant?
I had a similar corruption a while back that appeared to be caused by Resco Keyboard, once I removed that it went away.
But if you are getting it straight after a hard reset with nothing else installed then I would be taking srvctec's advice and checking the insides.
I have owned my X51V for almost 4 years now. I went from WM2003, to WM 5.0...and recently to WM 6.0.
About 6 months ago while I still had WM 5.0 exactly the same problems started happening with my PDA. I only use my PDA for navigation...so other than TOMTOM nothing else was installed. I proceeded with hard resets. When the system rebooted, axim screen looked perfect, but I as soon I clicked on the START button or any other icon...I would start getting these "ERRORS" or BANDS...the more I click, the worse it gets. Icons under that START menu become unrecognizable.
Black and white bands appera all over the screen...not only near the START button.
This is extremely weird, since the problem started out of nowhere...I know 100% that it has nothing to do with software conflicts...since I HAVE NOTHING INSTALLED NOW.
So to make the long story short...I recently upgraded to WM6.0....and.....
EXACTLY SAME PROBLEMS keep happening again.
This freaking device is out of warranty. Please hep :o)

I wasn't aware the x51v came with WM2003 installed (see specs here). As far as I know it came with WM5.
As far as your problem, as I posted above, it sounds like a connector somewhere on one of the circuit boards inside your PDA may be the culprit. You will need to take it apart and resecure them all to rule this possibility out.

This problem has appeared to me for some years now, starting with early WM5 builds. But it will show up more frequently the newer your version of WM is. AFAIK, it's some bug/incompatibility with the 2700G driver..
Thank you all for trying to help me solve my problem with my Dell x51v. I have tried all of your suggestions (and more) including
- soft reset
- hard reset
- upgrading to WM6
- removing screen protector
- taking the x51v apart and resecuring the connectors
Still the problem persists. The same wrong graphics recur after hard resetting. When I hard reset the problem will go away most of the times, but recur after using the x51v for at short time (1-2 min) without installing anything. Other times it persists after a hard reset.
Box asked if the notification on the screen shot had something to do with my problem. It didn't.
The solution: As the battle between PDA's and SmartPhones has fallen out mostly in favor of the latter and Dell has decided to stop producing PDA's, I have decided to buy a HTC TOUCH HD. Ordered yesterday. Will receive in af few days.
Excited. But still a little sad to say goodbye to my Dell Axim x51v.:rolling:

Jesper
Have fun with your HD. But I would like to know if cooling down the Axim (by putting it (enclosed in a plastic bag or whatever) into the fridge would have reduced your problems.
I too have the same problem. It usually goes away when I reset the PDA. The problem is that it eventually returns. This actually happened before my warranty expired. I phoned tech support and they told me to reset. I did and the problem went away, unfortunately, it hasn't permanently gone away.
It can't be a connector probem because, as I have stated before, I also use my Axim for navigation. So the only software that I have installed is TOMTOM. I have been using it for years without any problems, until recently.
The problems that I am experiencing...which are exactly the same ones as described by the original starting post, are only localized to windows mobile screen. All these graphic "errors" happen in windows mobile screen. They happened when I had WM 5.0 and even after I upgraded to 6.0 they are still there.
However, as soon as I enter TOMTOM full screen, none of these problems are evident...the screen looks completely normal, until I exit the program to WM screen, and then....then it is practically impossible to use the axim...becausese none of the icons are discernible.
:(
I was so excited to see that I wasn't the only one with this problem. Too bad no one seems to know the solution. I too have tried soft and hard resets, upgrading the OS, and removing the screen protector and running business cards around it. When Tom Tom is running, there is no issue at all. My x51v has no other issues right now, it's just really annoying to look at all the messed-up icons.
