Battery latch open

My Axim X51v is shutting down quite often with the "Battery latch open alert" The problem is the battery latch is fine. Tthis happens alot too! Anyway to disable this alarm? My PDA is almost becoming unfunctional due to these shut downs. I have used several batteries and doors with no change?

Thanks ,
Paul

This has been a rather common problem. Run a search in the forums for battery latch and have a look at the several creative solutions members have created for the problem.

This thread Back Door Battery Switch on X51v is one of several that lists a number of solutions, ideas, and links

Are you using an after market battery. i briefly had this problem and it was due to the after market battery swelling ever so slightly.

Seems this is a common problem .. you have to wonder why Dell put the switch in the first place. I have the same problem using an extended battery and cover. Does anyone know if the problem occurs with the standard battery and cover?

The battery latch is there to prevent an unexpected loss of data. When you swap out the battery, the switch puts the device into sleep mode, powering down the screen and stopping the battery drain. The backup "battery" isn't a battery at all, but a capacitor that only holds sufficient charge to sustain the volatile RAM memory for about 5 minutes. Until the switch is closed again, you cannot start the PDA in full function because to do so would drain the capacitor and you would lose the perishable data. So, Dell put in the switch to protect your data. Unfortunately, when it fails, it prevents you using the device. Bypassing it works, sort of, but if you bypass it and the battery is out longer than a few minutes you'll lose all your data.

Jake, the X51V has persistent memory so only needs the backup capacitor to retain the time and date, the rest of your data can sit there uncharged for a long time.
