After 3 years of it working well, I tried to turn on my Axim X51 last night and I got no response. The screen remained black and the power button does not light up.
First I checked to see if the lock button was on. It was in off position
Next I performed a soft reset, still nothing.
I actually had a spare battery which was charged and tried it, still black screen.
Tried a hard re-set, still black screen
Tried cradling the Axim in a charger. The power light came on red, then the green. The unit still would still not turn on. The power button will still not light up if not cradled.
Tried a hard re-set while in the cradle while the power light was green, still nothing.
Activesync does not recognize the unit.
The screen remains black.
By black screen you mean its off completely, there is no backlight or anything. The charge light shows that your battery is good and that your axim is acknowledging its charged fully.
Maybe somebody else knows whats going on.

1. Press and hole Power+Record button
2. Tap the reset hole while holding the two
3. Release the Power+Record button when a screen comes up

If there is no response, check the battery latch. Jiggle it a few times. Also, see if the battery is bulging.

One more try. Hold it at a slight angle in a very bright light to see if anything is on the screen but the backlight is off. Also, try cradling it and see if you can see it in activesync, explore.
If diagnostic mode doesn't work, that means the device isn't starting up.
I'm out of ideas for the moment.

I tried your suggestion but get the same thing. Activesync does not recognize the unit, even when I try to create a new partnership.
One more thing..and this is probably a biggie, I did not mention. The power light does not work at all when it is not cradled or connected to the AC adapter.
