I am running another thread concerning my Axim X51 troubles.
If my Axim cannot be fixed, I am strongly thinking of replacing it with a Smartphone.
I am on the ATT network.
What Smartphone would you recommend?
Are any of these unlocked?
Besides the obvious cellphone element, what are the differences between a smartphone and a Pocket PC (my Axim ran WM5)? Will the same 3rd party programs that ran on the Axim be able to run on the Smartphone?
A specific question, will I be able to connect to my home Internet network(using Wi-Fi, bluetooth or USB) with a Smartphone as I did with my Axim?(I realize it will first depend if the Smartphone has W-fi, bluetooth or USB capabilities) I don't want to purchase a data plan to do this.
Still looking at HTC Diamond 2 and HTC Touch Pro 2...

I've been using the AT&T Fuze on AT&T's network for the last year and think its a great phone and pocket pc. Before that I was using the IPAQ hw6925 on the AT&T network - another great phone and pocket pc. Both of these devices are locked to AT&T, but just about any other GSM windows mobile device that is unlocked will work on AT&T's network.
Most any pocket pc software you've used on your Axim will work just fine on WM6.1 (professional) devices that have a touch screen. If you get a WM 6.x standard device (no touch screen) you'll probably have to purchase new software.
If you get a Windows phone that includes a WIFI radio in it (and most of them do), you can get on the internet, just like you do with your Axim, without having to access the cellular data plan. You have to be a little careful though because by default the data connection is the primary internet connection on most windows phones. There are a couple of things you can do to prevent an accidental data connection.

Here's an article that discusses AT&T's new requirement for windows mobile phones. When I got my first windows mobile phone, I also signed up for a data plan even though I didn't really want to. Now, I'm glad to have it. WIFI access is nice, but I go many places where there is no WIFI. It's great to still be able to get on the net to check email and surf the internet.

My son has the iPhone on AT&T and he loves it. I have removed him from my will and cast him out among demons for buying something non WM. In all seriousness, he loves it and says that the apps available is amazing.
