Memory Question

I need to buy more memory. 256mb. I haven't decided on if I want SD or CF yet. Either way, I just want to know what is recommended.... Sandisk or Lexar. And also, do the different speeds make a difference and have the Sandisk issues been fixed yet. Thanks.

best to get SD memory as CF is slowly going the way of the dinosaurs. also, on an X5, the SD slot can only be used for memory while the CF slot can be used for all manner of accessories - having to remove your CF memory card in order to insert your CF ethernet adapter or wifi card wouldn't be so nice. worse having to remove your CF memory card with all your maps in order to put your CF gps unit in.

as such, probably stay away from sandisk as there are lots of problems with sandisk SD memory and axims. lexar SD cards should generally be good though.

SimpleTech or you are asking for trouble.

Search the forums and you will see what I mean.

CF: anybody is OK. even sandisk's CF doesn't have a great reputation, but I personally would have no qualms about buying it from them.

SD: Sandisk is troublesome, but Lexar is a gamble, too. You'll most likely be OK with lexar though. I personally would recommend SimpleTech.

Note: "good cards" will be nearly flawless/errorless regardless of what brand you buy from. it's just that some brands have fewer of these perfect cards than others, to put it simply.

SD slots are also a factor, but "perfect" cards will work in all of them without trouble. "possibly bad cards" will work perfectly in some, but if you get the wrong SD slot, you'll have all kinds of problems. this applies primarily to the X5.

X3(i): some SD slots are plain bad, unit will have to be replaced. HOWEVER, some genuine card failures have occurred as a result of using Sandisk/Sandisk OEM SD. as far as I know, however, Sandisk performs much better on average in X3s than in X5s, especially X5s about 9 months ago.

Sorry, I couldn't justify buying a 512mb Lexar SD as they are $430 CDN. I am better off buying two 256mb ones at $100 CDN each. Basically, www.canadacomputers.com is the cheapest place in Toronto that I'll find computer parts and they carry Lexar and Sandisk for SD and CF memory.

It looks like you're from Toronto Canada, meaning that you'll probably only be able to get Lexar and Sandisk...but i did find PNY sd cards at Staples, so that might be something to check out, no problem with the card yet.

Edit: Your post at the same time as mine makes me look stupid... lol

I have a SanDisk 256mb CF and have had no troubles with it. I would like to invest in a SD card soon to put movies on.
