HTC HD2 headed for T-Mobile in March?

A while back, it was rumored that the HTC HD2, was going to hit T-Mobile. Well, WMExperts got a ROM for the HD2, and found these files.

Yup. Those are T-Mobile files. Here are some other stats from this ROM:

The LG eXpo is a hot new Windows Mobile 6.5 device that some are looking forward to. It’s got an optional Pico projector designed to work with it as well. It just hit AT&T’s website the other day and eagle-eyed Steven was the 1st to share it with us all. He has been CNTL-F5ing AT&T’s website for a while. He’s be reviewing this one for us soon too. Better late than never huh? This thing was supposed to drop 10 days ago according to the announcement. Let’s take a look at this unboxing!

Verizon Bits – We can handle the iPhone and the Palm Pre Plus

I’ll skip over the handling the iPhone part and get to the part about the Palm Pre. I’m going to file the Palm Pre Plus into the “rumor” file for now. There is no doubt that Palm has something to show us at CES 2010 since I got an invitation to a private event, but what is it. Well, there were stories posted this week that Verizon employees were getting Palm WebOS training, so we can add two and two together, right? Today, Phone Arena is saying that they’ve gotten a tip that a device call the Palm Pre Plus is in the internal Verizon system now. This isn’t the 1st we’ve heard about the Pre going to Verizon either, a tweet by a Verizon employee back in October spilled the beans already (Tweet was removed, but Engadget has it archived). I buy it. Do you?

What I don’t buy is Verizon getting the iPhone after all the things that Verizon’s said and done regarding the iPhone. They launched an attack at AT&T’s network with hints of iPhone attack. The directly attacked the iPhone with the Droid marketing (why they totally ignored the Storm 2’s launch). Why on earth would Apple allow Verizon to get the iPhone. I know, business is business, but does the past have consequences in business? Maybe not.

AT&T Getting Android Soon? Yes. Motorola Backflip/Enzo!

Look what AT&T might be working on… An Android phone.

First of all, our tipster referred to it as the “Motorola Enzo” although he said it could be called Backflip on launch day, which – to us at least – seems more likely. Feast your eyes, ladies and gents, on what will very likely become AT&T’s first Android Phone:

I wouldn’t normally be really excited about “just a rumor”, but in this case, unless this is a super photoshop job, I am sold. Android to AT&T is confirmed!

LG eXpo Now listed on at&t’s website

Well look what the cat dragged in. After being delayed for shipping issues the eXpo has finally shown up on online at at&t’s website for $199 on contract with the obligatory data plan. It’s got all my requirements, WM6.5 a full slide-out keyboard, Snapdragon processor and that biometric sensor/d-pad is intriguing.

Google Phone Buzz Encyclopedia – So much info in such a short time!

This rush of info about the Google phone that has been rumored for more than a year were fueled by a tweet. MobileCrunch reported that the following tweet was made and was followed up with a couple other tweets from Google employees that claimed that they received a “Google Phone”.

Rich posted a blurb about an email alert he got from the Wall Street Journal that confirmed a little more info about this mysterious phone.

“Google Inc. has designed a cellphone it plans to sell directly to consumers as soon as next year, according to people familiar with the matter.

The phone is called the Nexus One and is being manufactured for Google by HTC Corp., these people said. It runs Android, the operating system for mobile phones that Google developed, they added.”

Engadget says that Google has not made any statements that confirm what the Wall Street Journal article stated. In fact, the statement says it’s poorly sourced.

Google posted on its blog that it was experimenting with "eating its own dogfood" on the Android front by giving employees "around the globe" a device to test. There have been zero — zero — official statements about Google selling the device to retailers or directly to consumers. There is a Wall Street Journal article which claims that this is the strategy Google is headed in, but the post contains a number of poorly sourced and suspect facts, so we say take it with a major grain of salt. Other reports say "what if" and "could." That doesn’t make it so. As of right now, the only way to get this phone is to work for Google.

More and more info has come in over the last 2 days, some confirmed, some speculation, and some rumored.

Acer Liquid With AT&T Bands

I’m still a little incredulous about an Android handset finally arriving subsidized on AT&T. As we’ve seen before, just because handsets go through the FCC doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re guaranteed to show up on a specific carrier. Although, this past week’s news that an Acer Liquid with the AT&T 3G bands of 850/1900 MHz has been approved by the FCC has offered a little hope that AT&T will ring in 2010 with at least one new Android handset on their network. Below are a few highlights about this promising handset:

T-Mobile Announces Carrier Billing for Android? Windows Marketplace already does that!

I caught this over at Phone Scoop yesterday and shrugged it off. I wasn’t too excited about that, but I was thinking about it again this morning when other sites started posting about it. Windows Marketplace does this already.

T-Mobile has indicated through its support forums that it is bringing carrier billing support to the Android Market. Until now, users wishing to purchase applications had to use Google Check-Out to pay the software developer directly. With this feature enabled in the Android Market, T-Mobile customers will be able to purchase apps and have the expense added to their monthly bills.

This should be handled at “Google’s level” without T-Mobile having to implement a way themselves.

With Windows Marketplace, I can just download all I want and bill it to my carrier, AT&T in my case. I am pretty sure that all carriers are onboard with this too.

Shocker : Vodafone to drop HD2 for iPhone?

UPDATE: The source of my article misunderstood. WM Experts found some additional info where Vodafone replied to concerns coming from the story….

We just wanted to update you all on the current situation with the HD2:

We haven’t recalled or stopped selling it, at the moment we have simply ran out of stock. When our next batch of stock arrives, this will be used to fulfill our outstanding back orders but we won’t be taking any additional orders via Telesales.

This has to be quite a shocker. The very best, most feature rich Windows Mobile phone being dumped by a company that embraced WinMo phones when they were unknown to most.

We’ve had official word from Vodafone on the fate of the HTC HD2 this afternoon, with a spokesman stating “We are not re-stocking the HTC HD2 for general consumer sales once current stock runs out. We have had a massive amount of interest in it, and our initial stock sold out quickly. Subsequent deliveries have been used to fulfil backorders, but we are not looking to re-stock the device.”

Explaining the move, our man at Vodafone said the HTC HD2 didn’t have a place in its line-up, purely because of other devices edging it out in the coming months. And, yes, the iPhone on Vodafone was mentioned.

This article is reading between the lines a little bit, but there is a lot to be learned between lines.

3% of AT&T Smartphone users consume 40% of network

And as a result, according to the AP from a posting on MSNBC.com changes are coming:

“NEW YORK – Wireless data hogs who jam the airwaves by watching video on their iPhones will be put on tighter leashes, an AT&T Inc. executive said Wednesday.

The carrier has had trouble keeping up with wireless data usage, leading to dropped connections and long waits for users trying to run programs on their devices. AT&T is upgrading its network to cope, but its head of consumer services, Ralph de la Vega, told investors at a UBS conference in New York that it will also give high-bandwidth users incentives to "reduce or modify their usage."

De la Vega didn’t say exactly how or when the carrier would change its policies, but he said some form of usage-based pricing for data is inevitable.”

The full article can be read here. This follows a separate news item from the Wall Street Journal today that the FCC is looking for ways to force over-the-air TV broadcasters to give up bandwidth in order that cell phone operators can better satisfy the demands that they are facing.

Motorola Droid Update Available, Android 2.01 on Verizon

Verizon has made an update available for the Motorola Droid. This puts the Droid on Android 2.01. The instructions on how to go about updating your Droid can be found here.

The following enhancements to the Droid by Motorola have been made:

OS stability is improved.

Battery life is improved.

Camera auto focus functionality is improved, and time between
shots is reduced.

Enhancements for three-way calling.

Audio for incoming calls is improved.

When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now
remains on.

Bluetooth® functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated.

Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle
Bluetooth solutions.

After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically
be removed from the notification panel.

Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS
message is received.

SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses.

Google contact merging has been updated to accommodate
seven-digit numbers.

Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously.

I have to say, this is a great idea. If AT&T doesn’t know where they are having trouble, they can’t fix it huh? Now there is no excuse, AT&T releases an app (iTunes Link) to share where and what happened…

AT&T Mark the Spot is an application that provides customers a means to provide feedback on network user experience to AT&T.

Simplicity of operation

Submit a real time report capturing local GPS coordinates at time and place of event

AT&T’s 3G network outperforms Verizon’s?

AT&T and Verizon are still taking blows at each other on the airwaves with all their ads countering each others strengths and weaknesses, but they have taken the fight out of the court system. A couple days later, Telephony Online published an article stating that AT&T outperforms Verizon in an independent report recently.

AT&T’s mobile data network problems compared to Verizon’s are mainly problems of perception, according to independent testing firm Root Wireless. On most critical performance metrics, AT&T’s 3G networks comes out on top, they say

I guess the real test is how each of them perform for you in your own city. For me, in Tuscaloosa Alabama, they are both really strong. I have no complaints with either company. I personally use AT&T, but if Verizon was GSM, it would be a toss up. This article goes pretty deep into the testing, well beyond the real life tests we all do in our own cities daily.

Root tested VZW and AT&T’s networks in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles-Orange County, New York, San Francisco, Seattle-Tacoma and Washington, DC. According to its data, AT&T’s average download speed ranged from 246 kb/s to 428 kb/s across the seven markets, while VZW’s average speeds ranged from 195 kb/s to 259 kb/s, validating AT&T’s claim of having the nation’s fastest 3G network. Verizon’s uplink-optimized EV-DO revision A network, however, beat out AT&T in upload speeds in most of those markets, though not by much. Average uplink bandwidth for both operators ranged from 94 kb/s to 138 kb/s. In general the chance for a data connection failure was low for both operators, never exceeding 3%, but AT&T managed to best or match Verizon in all seven markets. Surprisingly, Sprint (NYSE:S) had the highest connection failure rate, ranging from 11% to 15%, calling into question Sprint’s “most reliable network” claims.
