Droid X: Road Warrior

Posted by Tim Hillebrand on Nov 06, 2010 | 14 Comments

When I go on an extended road trip, I like to take everything with me I need to be productive on the road without having to lug a lunky laptop. On a recent month long trip, I decided to use a Droid X as my mobile office to keep me productive and connected. I found it to be a super companion. It helped me process data, write, publish, communicate via email, sms, mms, and IM. It guided me and gave me valuable information...

Tablets Coming from RIM, Sharp and…Amazon???

Posted by Zealot on Sep 28, 2010 | 9 Comments

This is life around the luxurious Mobilitysite offices these days…another week, another metric tonnage of Tablet announcements. This week we have more concrete information on the offerings from two anticipated new Tablet vendors; Research in Motion and Sharp. However, as the market scrambles desperately for some kind, ANY kind of differentiator for all these vaporware Tablets, each has a few surprises and a certain...

In the Ebook Reader War, Sony Should Fold

Posted by Zealot on Sep 16, 2010 | 8 Comments

Well, maybe it is more  that Sony should roll. What do I mean? Well, the main problem that Sony has been facing in trying to be taken seriously in the current slapfight between Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble is that they really don’t have anything innovative to bring to the table. The Sony Reader line aren’t full-fledged tablets like the iPad, they aren’t backed by world class bookstores like the Kindle...

New Kindle Ad Takes on iPad by the Pool

Posted by Zealot on Sep 13, 2010 | 6 Comments

Well it appears that Amazon has designated its current arch enemy in the ebook reader wars…and it doesn’t rhyme with “crook”. Yes, the iPad seems to be new target for Kindle ads in the US. Check out the new one as it goes after three Achilles Heels of Apple’s “magical” tablet….size/weight, poor readability in sunlight and price, price, PRICE. Plus if you use an iPad you sunbathe in a lame tshirt, while...

Ebooks: Sony Readers Updated, but are Still Doomed

Posted by Zealot on Sep 01, 2010 | 8 Comments

Considering that just about every ebook reader out there has been getting shiny new updated models released of late, Sony could not stand pat with its Sony Reader line. They have refreshed all three of their Readers, the Pocket, Touch and Daily. All three now feature touchscreens with Pearl technology, the new generation of E-ink found in the newest Kindles. This will improve the page turning speed and the readability...

Ebooks: The $100 Sweet Spot has been Reached

Posted by Zealot on Aug 31, 2010 | 7 Comments

The Ebook Reader price war continues, as in a move I predicted a few weeks ago Borders has apparently dropped the prices on the two Ebook Readers they are selling in response to Amazon and Barnes & Noble both stealing their budget thunder with recent price cuts. The Kobo Reader with an e-ink display had been selling for $149 and will drop to $129 while the Aluratek Libre with an LCD screen will drop from $119 to $99,...

GPAD G10 Android Tablet Review

Posted by Rich Bilancia on Aug 30, 2010 | 11 Comments

The Gpad G10 is the second device that I have recently received for review from PandaWill.com.  Last month I reviewed their X10 MID Windows CE Tablet.  Both devices have a 7” resistive touch display but entirely different operating systems.  In my opinion, the Gpad G10 is a much better device for virtually the same money.  It provides a better experience and because of the Android Marketplace, a...

Ebooks: Kindle on a Roll

Posted by Zealot on Aug 26, 2010 | 8 Comments

Amazon has been having a VERY good week. It took a big, Apple-style gamble coming out with new Kindle hardware when the ebook war is being fought so fiercely and intently…and it paid off. Rather than being turned off by being asked to buy a new version of the popular device, Kindle fans are lapping up the Kindle 3 in record numbers and are applauding its improved screen and lighter weight. Amazon is publically crowing...

The GPAD G10 7” Android Tablet that I promised a couple of weeks ago has arrived from China-based PandaWill.com.  It arrived today. What follows in this posting is my unboxing report.  After I use and get comfortable with the device, I’ll post my full...

Ebooks: Nook Software Updated on iPhone, iPad

Posted by Zealot on Aug 17, 2010 | 3 Comments

The Ebook Reader wars rage on, now moving over to features as Barnes & Noble has released updates to their iPhone and iPad software (and some enhancements for the PC client as well), bringing them more in line with the capabilities of the Nook reader itself. The addition that will likely cause the biggest reaction amongst readers (and therefore from Apple and Amazon) is the ability to lend an ebook. This feature has...

Ebooks: New Android-based Sony Readers May Be Coming

Posted by Zealot on Aug 12, 2010 | 7 Comments

It is a day for Sony news it seems, but this is based on a very interesting notice pasted on a professional bulletin board which has now apparently been taken down. According to the posting, Sony is looking for an engineer with Android experience to join their Reader team…gosh I wonder why? The way I see it, despite a lot of tough talk about refusing to drop the price of their ebook readers further so as to not compromise...

Ebooks: Mass Market Publisher Going Digital

Posted by Zealot on Aug 08, 2010 | 14 Comments

We have been seeing stories lately of authors opting to release certain books only in digital formats…now it seems that trend is spreading to publishers. One of the oldest paperback publishing houses in the US, Dorchester, has opted to go completely digital as of this week. After watching their paperback sales steadily fall in stores such as Walmart, accounting for a 25 percent drop last year alone, Dorchester has decided...

Ebooks: B&N’s Next Move – Boutiques

Posted by Zealot on Aug 02, 2010 | 10 Comments

The Ebook Reader War continues. Amazon just scored a major victory and a lot of attention with the double barreled attack of new models AND another price cut on their Kindle ebook readers. Considering that Barnes & Noble had just introduced a new WiFi only Nook as well as dropping the prices on the 3G model a few weeks ago, to lower prices again so soon would look more than a little desperate. However, B&N NEEDS...

New Kindles End of August

Posted by Zealot on Jul 29, 2010 | 6 Comments

As I have been predicting for awhile (though no one is much surprised) Amazon announced new Kindle models yesterday. Now to be called just the Kindle the two new models (one with 3G/WiFi, one with just WiFi) replace the currently sold out Kindle 2. Pricing will undercut the equivalent models of the Nook each by 10 dollars, which I am sure was totally coincidental. The new Kindle will cost you $189 for the 3G model and...

Ebooks: Reader Sales Fall Short and New Models Coming

Posted by Zealot on Jul 28, 2010 | 1 Comment

Times were harder for ebook readers in Q2 than we had thought, and Digitimes has some interesting numbers concerning sales today. In the second quarter of 2010 1.35 million e-book readers were shipped worldwide. Sounds pretty good for a niche product doesn’t it? However,  2.02 million units had been expected to be shipped so the reality fell short by about a third. This could be due to pressure from the iPad and anticipation...

Ebooks: Kindle Sells Out…to Upgrade?

Posted by Zealot on Jul 28, 2010 | 3 Comments

Perhaps $189 really IS the magical price for a Kindle. According to Amazon’s website, they are completely sold out of the market leading ebook reader. While Amazon still refuses to say how many Kindles they have actually sold since the product was debuted two and a half years ago (Amazon’s spokespeople usually just say “Lots” and if pressed, say “How about those Cubs this year, huh?”) they do say there was...

Ebooks: Dangerous Trends

Posted by Zealot on Jul 25, 2010 | 24 Comments

Somebody really smart (I think GB Shaw) once said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. He could easily have written a coda to that saying that it it went double with anything involving publishing. Just as ebooks are causing a revolution in publishing, making more books available to more people more of the time, some forces in publishing are seeking to strangle that revolution aborning. The weapon...

Sharp To Release Already Doomed Ebook Reader

Posted by Zealot on Jul 21, 2010 | 1 Comment

This one just leaves me scratching my head. Sharp has announced that they are planning on entering the ebook reader market in a big way with a new product…but which will likely only read an obscure propiratary format only used currently in Japan. The reader is intended for release first in Japan, but Sharp is then planning on bringing it to the US and is in talks with Verizon about it. As most ebook readers (with the...

Ebooks: The iPad’s Long Reach

Posted by Zealot on Jul 19, 2010 | 9 Comments

There is no doubt that the iPad has had a powerful effect on the ebook market, triggering both features changes and price wars amongst the market leaders such as the Kindle and the Nook. Now it appears that its effect is being felt even in places that it isn’t for sale yet. Digitimes is reporting that Hanwang, the makers of the Hanvon ebook reader, is stuck with half a million unsold readers in storage according to...
