Sharp just announced it’s new “Netwalker” line of Ultra Teeny Tiny Internet Device with No Market to Speak Of (UTTIDWNMTSO), starting with the PC71, a 6.3 x 4.2 x .9-inch device featuring a five inch touchscreen, Ubuntu OS and glorified thumbboard. It is running an ARM Cortex-A8 based processor, with 4GB of storage and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (but no 3G)….and makes me feel more than a little like Mr. Peabody. I am SURE I have seen this device before in my travels.

Now while I think the device IS sort of cool looking, admit it Sharp, it’s a PDA.

You doubt me, well check my proof after the jump…

There have been leaks all over the place for about a month that Nokia was on the verge of releasing a phone of some kind that dropped Symbian in favor of the open source OS they have been flirting with for ages, Maemo. Well, now it is official, but it isn’t a phone, it is a 3G MID with phone capabilities, a 3.5 inch touchscreen and slide out QWERTY called the N900 and it looks to be made of win.

Here are some tidbits from Nokia’s press release…

The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. The result is PC-like multitasking, allowing many applications to run simultaneously. Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications.

To make web browsing more enjoyable, the Nokia N900 features a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and fast internet connectivity with 10/2 HSPA and WLAN. Thanks to the browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites look the way they would on any computer. Online videos and interactive applications are vivid with full Adobe Flash(TM) 9.4 support. Maemo software updates happen automatically over the internet.

On top of that, the N900 includes integrated Bluetooth 2.1, FM transmitter and GPS; a full stack of standard phone features including 3-way conference calling, Microsoft Exchange support as well as the ability to handle up to 10 email accounts; 32GB of internal storage, microSD expansion and 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens.

In a word…WANT.

Considering all the people who were saying that these Maemo rumors meant that Nokia was going to deep six S60 (as ludicrous as that sounded when it is the most used mobile OS worldwide by a wide margin), Nokia took great pains to make a clear division between Symbia and Maemo by having Jonathan Arber, a Senior Research Analyst and IDC, say the following…

Just as Nokia continues to expand and diversify its device portfolio, so it is deploying multiple platforms to allow it to serve different purposes and address different markets. While we have seen continued growth in Symbian as a smartphone platform, Maemo enables Nokia to deliver new mobile computing experiences based on open-source technology that has strong ties with desktop platforms.

OK, that didn’t convince me any more than Google’s “Android walks sideways and Chrome OS will walk straight” argument. I have no doubt that Nokia isn;t going to let all the work they have put into Symbian go to waste, but personally I feel that we will begin seeing Maemo on smartphones in much the way Microsoft will be using WinMo 7…a two track attack with S60 on mid level smartphones and Maemo on the iPhone Killers.

He numbered in this new Superphone category such devices as the iPhone, Samsung Instinct and LG Dare and sees them as devices with “vastly better performance, desktop-grade web browsing, and high-resolution displays”.

I definitely agree with his main point, and feel that a serious paradigm shift is taking place in the smartphone market as devices like the iPhone are transcending even the broad feature sets found in smartphones. Just as the first smartphones such as the Treo and the original BlackBerry melded the cell phone and the PDA (killing the PDA category in the process), so I feel the iPhone and it’s cousins are merging smartphones and MIDs (soon to follow the PDA into Betamaxland). They are more or less the mobile Internet devices that we have seen alot of vapor about, without many actual releases. The slow roll out of WiMax in the US, the duck soup of 3G standards in Europe and Asia and the resulting dependency on WiFi for mobile internet by many devices has effectively shut the window of opportunity on the MID as a mass market device in my opinion. As an ultra mobile notebook replacement MIDs have been overwhelmed by the Netbooks, and as a Mobile Internet device by the so called Superphones .

So Gizmodo is confused about the naming structure out there for UMPCs, ULCPCs, mini-notebooks, ultraportables, subnotebooks, and netbooks They just don’t understand the difference between all of them but not to worry Giz, Warner Crocker from GottaBeMobile has it all figured out. Yeah we can probably blame the marketing folks for all the names but blame does not answer the questions “what is a ULCPC?” or “what is the difference between a Subnotebook and a mini-Notebook?”

So after a serious amount of time researching the meaning of each, Warner has come up with the Crocker Concise Definition Mobile Dictionary. In his first release of this soon to be time honored classic, Warner clearly defines the Subnotebook, Ultraportable, Mini-Notebook, Ultra-Low Cost PC (ULCPC, Netbook, Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC)).

Jenn, over at Pocketables.net, has explained in step by step instructions how to tether her AT&T Tilt (WM6) to the Nokia N800/N810 Internet Tablet.

Although various hacks and utilities exist to enable the functionality, I didn’t have to use any of them because the Tilt actually supports BT DUN right out of the box. Or at least it does after all the AT&T nonsense is wiped off. (Given that AT&T buried Internet Sharing and put Wireless Modem in its place, I wouldn’t put it past them to have somehow disabled DUN too.)

Unfortunately, just because the functionality is there doesn’t mean it automatically works. The main obstacle when trying to establish a BT DUN connection between the Tilt and the N800/N810 is that Nokia’s predefined operator settings aren’t correct

Head over to Pocketables.net and see how it is done!

Joining the rest of the world, and embracing the need for technology to improve the mobility of our needs, DirecTV has added the capability to add shows from a remote location.

With the DVR Scheduler (previously known as Remote Booking), you can log onto the mobile site at m.directv.com, and bounce a record signal from DirecTV’s satellite down to your DVR in minutes. The soft launch has HR20-700 DVR models going live right about now, with more models and an official rollout scheduled for February. Even the venerable TiVo HR10-250 is scheduled to get this feature.

No more leaving the house, getting to work, and wondering if you are going miss the latest <strike>Martha Stewart</strike>, umm, I mean Monster Garage.

MovieTickets.com has just made buying movie tickets in advance even easier with the launch of two powerful new mobile web applications. These new solutions mean moviegoers can search for a movie by location or title, buy tickets, access a listing of new releases, box office information, read movie news, and even view detailed local area maps to the theater and more. They can be accessed by visiting mobile.movietickets.com from any Internet enabled mobile device or iPhone users can visit an optimized site at iphone.movietickets.com.

“MovieTickets.com was an early mover into the mobile space with the launch of our first mobile application over five years ago. These new applications demonstrate our commitment to improving our service offerings and popularizing advance movie ticket purchases as buying options expand and new technology platforms emerge,” said Joel Cohen, Executive Vice President and General Manager, MovieTickets.com.

Well, as you can see in the picture in the right it looks like a beeper. But I did not call it beeper just because of that. I called beeper because to me this device will do the same thing that beepers did few years ago, they created the need to have a phone everywhere and at any time. The MTube is here to create the need for Internet everywhere and at any time. That’s what the combination of WiMax and WiFi means guys. A future that is here and we have not even noticed.

According to the::unwired, Mike Schroepfer from the Mozilla Foundation posted on his blog that there are plans to port Firefox to mobile devices. Mozilla also plans to expand their full time contributors to help focus on applications for mobile devices.

This certainly is great news, however, information indicated that we probably won’t see anything until next year. One word Mozilla…. HURRY!

Nokia has released a new version of the Internet Tablet OS 2007 edition, available now for download. This new release (version number 4.2007.38-2) provides a software fix for a bug which may have appeared while copying large amount of data over-the-air or from external SDHC memory card to internal memory or vice versa. In some cases the downloaded data may have corrupted.

This new release fixes also a bug which drops in some cases voltage from memory card, though cards should manage this kind of situations without corruption.
