Kohjinsha DZ dual screen netbook

The less I can say about the Kohjinsha DZ is that it’s completely different to any thing that I have seen in the last 3 years. It will hit the market next month but only in Japan. And that’s really bad. I really do not understand what’s what this company is waiting to start selling every where in the world.

It comes with two 10.1 inch LCD screens that slide together to make transporting the thing easier, with each screen having s a resolution of 1024 x 600. The screens rotate too, all the way round so they can face backwards.

The Netbook runs on a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor with S780MN chipset and ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics.

HTC Snap and Touch Pro 2 Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM Updates Online

Warning: Before you get too excited, these are for the European models and not the US, Carrier branded versions of these phone. You’ll have to ride your carrier to get that ball rolling. We all know how long the carriers take to roll these things out. But if you are one of those, like me, that have a European model, this is for you. Enjoy.

I highlighted the two downloads on this page that are available. The two that are out now are:

Upgrade with care folks. I will be posting a step by step of my upgrade on my Touch Pro 2 a bit later this evening. I am happy to see this finally roll out. I am disappointed with 6.5, but I still want it on my TP2.

VIA Announces NetNote, using Surfboard

Just when you thought things couldn’t get more confusing in that muddy, sticky market space between smartphones and notebooks….VIA Technologies has announced yet another new mobile computing device category which they are calling NetNote.

NetNote, according to VIA, is “a new market segment VIA positioned between netbooks and traditional notebooks”…sort of like Qualcomm’s Smartbooks, but those use Qualcomm’s platform while NetNotes use VIA’s Surfboard platform. See the difference?

Actually the main difference is where Qualcomm envisioned Smartbooks as small, 7 inch or so, VIA is going for the 10-12 inch space but with the added graphics and media power of their Nano and Chrome9 processors.

Combining the VIA VX855 media system processor with a choice of VIA C7-M ULV or VIA Nano processors, two new VIA Surfboard NetNote Edition platforms are available, enabling system designers the opportunity to create high-quality, energy-efficient and feature-rich solutions for manufacturing NetNote devices.

While I think the last thing mobile computing needs is yet ANOTHER product type, I do applaud the arrival of more competitors to break the Intel Atom stranglehold on small devices. The more devices that use VIA or AMD or Nvidia or ARM platforms, the better…I just wish they could all agree on a damn name.

Aspire One Outdoor visibility test

This is one of the most common question asked about any portable device and to me the best way to see the difference is by comparing the device to one with so called “outdoor screen”

Get more from your small speakers

One of the features that I liked from my Samsung Q1 was the sound quality. The Q1 was prepared with drivers with SRS capability. Yesterday browsing the web I found that you can get the same sound quality in any UMPC or Netbook by just installing SRS Audio SandBox.

The SRS Audio Sandbox was designed recognizing audio has become more important as many people use their PC for entertainment, both at home and on the road. With SAS you can customize your audio experience based on music, movie, video or game content.

Let me tell you… the sound on my P1610 was just horrible and after installing this program I enjoyed playing music again like I did before in my old Samsung Q1. Fantastic! A Must Have!

Everex Netbooks

Everex will launch this year two mini notebooks one with a 10 inches display and another with a 8.6 display. This news is coming from InfoWorld.

Everex Systems will launch a new mini-laptop with a 10.2-inch screen in November, the company’s Taiwan partner said.

The company will also launch new 8.9-inch mini-laptops by the end of August, along with a model with WiMax wireless Internet capability in September.

ASUS Eee PC 1000H naked

Here is another naked lady courtesy of TweakTown, this time the victim is the newest Asus Eee PC 1000H.

Today we are going to strip down a juicier, more mature model; something seductively more endowed, and covered in glossy black. No more innocent “clad in white” teeny tid-bit viewing; this is an all-black leather mistress with her whips and chains, and it took a great deal of coaxing to calm her out of her plastic glossy black briefs. Rest assured though, that the few scars from the screws, and the torment as she teased us, nearly caused several explosions! – As you would have guessed by now, the story is diverse as well as slightly on the dark side. So please note that like our previous Eee PC exposé which you can view here, the content is slightly risqué.

Maximum Mini-Note

Eee PC News has a great story this weekend showing the vast cavalcade of VIA C7-M based Mini-notes and UMPCs that were presented in Computex a few weeks back. The post is in German, but the best part of it are the photographs which speak for themselves.

And what thousand words are these photos whispering in my shell-like ear? Well, first of all that there are a LOT of vendors I have never heard of (take for example Ngai Lik. When was the last time you sat down to work on your Ngai Lik? What about CZC? Sounds like an airport abbreviation somewhere in the former Soviet Union. iDOT? TongFang?). Secondly, considering how these devices all seem to look alike, with pretty much identical specs…there are going to be a lot of Mini-notes from little known Chinese vendors heavily discounted all over the web next January. Hope these suckers are recyclable, as I can’t imagine the market will be able to bear so many nearly identical models.

I would have to imagine most of these are concept devices which may never see the light of production, but there are some interesting devices on display, such as the Everex Cloudbook Max (clearly based on the new OpenBook design as it lists as WiMax ready). It certainly does show the sheer number of companies that are working overtime to enter the Mini-note/UMPC market. Next big thing, or passing fad?

Jason Dunn is a very well known person by anyone that has ever owned anything small with batteries. This is why this unboxing video about the HP 2133 is really something that anybody thinking about to buy one of those should check.

Do you believe in love at first sight? Normally I don’t, but I have to say, one look at the HP 2133 Mini Note and I felt my heart flutter – it’s damn fine looking!

Atoya, the new kid in town

Atoya is the latest UMPC/mini notebook shown at Computex by Medion, a known OEM for UMPC owners.

Adopting a 10-inch screen with 1024*800 resolution and 1.3M webcam, the Akoya supports 802.11n wireless LAN, 1GB of DDR2 memory and 80GB HDD.

The price of this one is going to be around 400 Euros. What I can say… I just can remember when a year ago nobody believed that UMPCs were a good business.

AMD wants also part of the UMPC market

Yes, that’s the message that AMD appears to be sending to the World at Computex 2008.

AMD revealed its 8.9-inch ultra low-cost sub notebook during Computex 2008, which is powered by AMD Sempron processor, ATI RS690 chipset and Linux OS.
