“Honey, they Shrunk my Thinkpad”

I have been a fan of Thinkpads since they were the mainstay of the IBM empire and have used them as my primary laptop almost exclusively for around 10 years now, starting with a T20 and currently using a T61. In my opinion, even through the build quality with Lenovo has lessened a bit from the classic IBM models and they keep trying to make the brand more “consumer-friendly”, it is still the preeminent business notebook out there.

That is why I was surprised to hear that Lenovo was planning on producing a Thinkpad netbook. Well, not surprised, as that is SOOOOO Lenovo…more like horrified.

Specs and images are out for the device, the Thinkpad X100e…and thankfully it is less netbook and more Ultra-light.

Installing W7 in a Ruvo MiniCap 7 using a nVidia ION

As you may recall I already had the chance of checking the version of this machine using a SIS graphic chip which was Ok but never up to the level of the one I’m currently checking. The facts that it uses a HDMI port to connect to your TV, an ION chip from nVidia that can handle 1080P without any problem and a size that allows you to perfectly hide it in anywhere makes this the perfect Media Center.

The installation of W7 in the Ruvo MiniCap 7 took a little more them 45 minutes. A total of 53 minutes counting 2 optional downloads for the nVidia chip. Tip: After running Windows Update, you will find an unknown device in the Device Manager, click on driver update and point the search to the CD that came with the device.

My first impressions? The ION chip is the way to go! You can see playing different video files in this video after the break.

Outsmarting Netbooks?

Can the end of the “Netbook Era” already be upon us? What’s more, will the netbook’s extinction event be the return of a technology that had it’s glory days 10 years ago?

I vividly remember the time when, as far a mobile computing was concerned, RISC chips were king and most of them featured ARM architecture. Underpowered, tiny ARM-based RISC chips ran all the coolest PDAs (yeah, I know, but that wasn’t always an oxymoron) from Palm and HP and Dell and Sony…and the hottest mobile phones. In some areas that popularity has never died. At least one RISC chip was found in 98 percent of all phones sold in 2007 and other consumer electronics such as handheld games, MP3 players, external hard drives, routers and more still utilize RISC chips. Low power consumption was what made the ARM architecture the mobile CPU to beat. The smaller the device, the smaller the battery and the more it needed ARM.

However, the death of PDAs was a major blow to the popularity of ARM as a CPU for serious computing. Suddenly, mobile computing was about full size Notebooks running Celeron or Centrino chips. The coup d’grace came with the arrival of the iPhone. Smartphones used to be about the hardware, but with the iPhone’s success, it became software, software, software. Content was now king, and no one much cared about the chip powering it…but that was soon to change again.

Viliv X70, first Impressions

I received a Viliv X70 review from Dynamism and I have prepared a short video for my Spanish site I the video has subtitles in English, so do not worry I you wont have to learn Spanish.

So far, the design is what have impressed me most of all. This UMPC looks really good, the space around the screen is well utilized and as result the device looks smaller than other devices with the same screen size.

Sony IS Preparing Vaio P Updates

Hot on the heels of news about the upcoming Vaio W “interNetbook”, Sony has confirmed that there will indeed be new models of the slim, stylish and very expensive Vaio P coming this fall.

TechRadar has heard from a Sony rep that “Vaio P Mark 2” models will be appearing in the UK in October or November. No word on specs yet, but apparently the first thing they are focusing on is improving the minute and a half Vista boot time. Odds are the new Vaio P’s will also be optimized for Windows 7 as well.

According to TechRadar, the Sony rep has this to say about the P’s popularity…

while overall sales of the ultraportable P Series hadn’t gone through the roof, they were still selling a significant amount to certain niche markets.

I am looking forward to hearing more specifics on technical specs. Since the W is going to be retailing at 500 dollars, I doubt we can expect to see any price drops for the “Starting at $900” Vaio P. But then I suppose that luxury gadgets is a good niche, just ask Apple.

The Archos9 the first UMPC with W7

So far The Archos 9 is the first UMPC announced with W7. A complete different picture than when Vista was about to be released. It’s like OEMs are being very cautious this time.

Unlike its predecessors, which are basic touchscreen internet media tablets, the Archos9 is a touch tablet that can run a full computer OS. It also features a built-in webcam, 120GB of memory, full touch support, an external mic, streo speakers, and a toggled-on optical trackpad and an on-screen keyboard, and will be available in Europe this October—around the same time as Windows 7’s release—for €450 ($635).

Adding 3G to a Viliv S5

This mod is for really brave users that really do not care about warranties or anything like that.

..or upgrade with 3G modem but then you need to solder the pci-e connector, antenna cable and use Novatel EU850D with SIM holder.. cut the metal plates and take away the HDD and replace it with half mini zif SSD.

The Recycled Netbook? Dell Inspiron 700m

Who needs a netbook eh? Seriously though, I was shopping for a netbook again and a thought came to my mind. I was cleaning out my office a couple weeks ago and remember seeing my wife’s old laptop, a Dell Inspiron 700m. We got this originally back in 2005 or 2006, I can’t remember. She broke the USB ports and she could no longer use her USB stuff, so I got her another one. Well, other than that it still works and has built in WiFi, a card reader, and all the other stuff a netbook should have, so why not right? I am in the process of trying to install Windows 7 on it, but either way, I think we are in business. No need to shell out another couple hundred for something to read email on why watching the Braves.

I put the HTC Advantage and the AT&T Tilt in the photo to give a size comparison. This thing is small. I just hope the battery is conditioned well enough to do the job.

The CrunchPad Leaks, Engadget Breaks the Story?

I saw it first on Engadget a couple hours ago and now Crunch Gear posts about it a couple hours later. At least they should link the source. (just kidding) Apparently Scoble leaked it out on Twitter.

Thanks to a slip of the fingers on Posterous (and Robert Scoble’s serious Twitter addiction), new images of Michael Arrington’s pet Internet-tablet project — the CrunchPad — have shown up looking very, very close to a finished product.

Congrats Michael Arrington. I know this will be a nice goal of yours that you seem to have accomplished. My goal was just to live long enough to see it happen. Good thing I quit smoking a month ago.

Crunchgear is promising video and more photos later, stay tuned.

So how can it help you, Joe Average User? Well here is just one (of many) example. Are you a fisherman? Here is a tip that they passed on with this piece about Hi-Tech Fishing: Part I

Finding where the fish are is undoubtedly the most important aspect to fishing. You can have the most expensive, state-of-the-art rods, reels, lures and bait, but if you’re in the wrong place you’re wasting your time.

Resourceful anglers have been using GPS and electronic charting for years to scout, pattern and mark fishing trails with greater accuracy, which in turn leads to a more successful day out on the water.

Using a shareware version of OziExplorer GPS Mapping Software together with a GPS receiver (you can pick up a leading-brand Bluetooth unit for around US$50) OziExplorer allows you to work with maps that you’ve either purchased or scanned. Your GPS position is plotted on the map providing real time tracking ability (moving map) and makes it easy to track waypoints, routes, and “hot” spots, all of which can be edited and saved to your hard disk for future use.

So fishing is not your thing? Then check out this Mobile WiFi Hotspot.
