Since I have had my iPhone I have been using the standard default headset from Apple if I thought I might receive a call if out walking, my other headset is Smokin Buds Black by SkullCandy. Now the Smokin Buds are good but have no mic just a volume switch, so was limited to listen to music or movies and when a call came in having to unplug it and take the call. So when I found out that the Tiger Eyes had a built in mic, I thought it would be a great option as they were similar to my Smokin Buds. Well earbuds arrived via FedEx earlier than I expected as it was shipped to Perth, Western Australia. What caught my eye was the packaging for the Earbuds, (see my un-boxing video again be kind only my second attempt lol).

The Tiger Eyes earbuds feature 8mm high performance neodymium drivers. JayBird pushed the limits of acoustics to produce the balance of sound an athlete needs to push through the next barrier. Great bass, crystal clear clarity and presence of sound you’ll swear your listening live.

Maybe you want to still see your email client while playing WoW on full screen or when you have too many Word documents open. Maybe you like to keep your IM client or Skype or your music software on an easily visible side screen, away from other applications. Well then, you need another monitor. Sadly, limitations imposed by hardware, graphics cards, desk space and budgets often keep us from adding another full size monitor to our computer set up. Now however there are USB-powered alternatives, small, relatively inexpensive monitors that don’t need to be connected to your graphics card.

One of the first of these products to be readily available is the Mimo UM-710, A 7 inch flat panel monitor that runs at a resolution of 800×480 (NOTE – and retails for $129.99 in the US and online, thanks for the reminder Breley) I have had a few days to play with a model, and thus far have found it far more useful and robust then I had been expecting it to be, with a few small reservations.

It was the size of a small VCR, held 20MB and it seemed like it was more storage then anyone would ever need until the end of time.

This last week I have been testing a SanDisk 16GB MicroSD card, kindly provided by our friends at SanDisk. Where once I was so impressed by 20MB the size of a bread box, I now take the fact that 16,000MB can be held on a card smaller then my fingernail to be commonplace. We have certainly come a long way in terms of solid state data storage and SanDisk has consistently innovated and is still one of the companies creating and pushing advances in NAND technology.

In January of 2008 I had the pleasure to review the Xpad for Laptop, a nonslip laptop cooler and heatshield, and I have used it ever since. As you know, laptops get mighty hot – up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit - and uncomfortable sitting on your lap. The Xpad for Laptop, as I said in my previous review, works like this: “The legs of the “X” shape are raised slightly above the base of the unit, allowing airflow and cooling. Inside is a strong platform with insulative air pockets, and EVA insulation material at the bottom provides a third layer of insulation and acts as the non-skid surface.”

There are no mechanical parts. The design itself provides the cooling using passive technology. No assembly required. Just take it out of the box, put it on your lap or a desk, put your laptop over it and you are ready to roll. It’s light and strong, and provides a great base for computing. So does the new, slimmer version, improve upon the old design?

The first difference I noticed about the Xpad Slim is the size. The original weighed 1 lb, and had dimensions 13″ x 10.5″ x .66″. The new, slimmer model, weighs less than a pound and has dimensions 14.5″ x 10.5″ x .5″. Both fit well under my 15″ laptop (see pictures below):

Saddleback Leather Company recently added several products to their lineup, including a laptop sleeve. I have previously reviewed one of Saddleback’s core products, the large briefcase, here. Some of the observations that I made in that review also apply here, especially concerning the experience of working with the company. I thought that the addition of a laptop sleeve to their product family was a very interesting choice. I think that part of they mystique that Saddleback has going for it is that the products they make feel like something that might have been made 150 years ago. You get the impression that when people use the phrase "They don’t make ‘em like they used to.", they’re talking about something like a Saddleback bag. That feeling of an ageless high quality product is one of the distinct features of Saddleback’s leather goods. So, making something like a laptop sleeve almost seems out of character for them. Not because they couldn’t do a good job, but rather because it is an admission that they are actually making products in the 21st century. I was very excited to get my hands on one of these bags and see if they could make a product for a modern computer user. Read on to find out how they did…

I first got a chance to hear these new headphones using my own Zune at the Digital Focus event during CES in January. I normally don’t stop at booths for accessories, but there was such a nice sized crowd there, I wanted to see what was up. I waited around a few minutes and then they popped some fresh ends and let me throw in some Metallica using my own Zune. I also allowed a couple others at the booth to hear these through my own media library. I was pretty impressed as were those around me. It was really the overall sound quality that impressed me, it was knowing that the sound I was hearing was coming out of a set of $39.99 earbuds. I was testing using the Pro Series.

Now I have a set of iHarmonix Platnium i-Series earbuds to try out. I have been using them on and off for a couple weeks now. Recently, with the nice weather, I was able to give them some real good yardwork testing. Now that the grass is short, it’s time for my impressions.

I tested the V-900 with an Axim X51 running Lenny’s WM6 and Makuu’s WM6 ROMS. I used OCN8 and several GPS utilities with the receiver. I also tested it as a stand alone GPS recording device.

The review model came in a box covered with Chinese writing, as it was a pre-production model. Your packaging may be different. Here is a picture of what I got:

Sometimes all you want for GPS is to record where you have been and then later retrieve that data. You might also like to tag your digital photos to that GPS data so you can see where you took the pictures you have for reference later. The i-gotU GT-120 GPS Travel Logger does all of that that. And it does it pretty well.

Although technically the device runs independently, the software for it is a Windows application. I ran it under WinXP Pro and under WinXP Pro as a virtual machine on an Intel iMac.

The GPS Travel Logger comes in a shrink wrap container. Here are some pictures of what you get:

Having the right mounting solution for my device has always been an issue. Some solutions are too big; others are too cheaply made and most are just “universal” mounts that fit a variety of devices. They are OK, in fact I got one years ago that was adjustable and has served me well but the biggest issue I had was that it was mounted from my windshield.

Why was that an issue? It always created a little restriction in my line of site and over time, the suction cup would eventually lose its grip and the device would fall and usually that would happen as I was driving down the highway. So it was time to look for an alternative.

This summer I had a friend visit me in Maine and he had the ProClip solution in his car; using a mount for his dedicated GPS and one for his HTC Tilt. I was impressed! It was well made, sturdy and just looked great; so I decided to check out the available options for the devices I use every day.

This set of mounts that I got for reviewing includes some of their brand new designs as well as some of their all-time best sellers.

All of ARKON’s products that I received for review are made of a sturdy black plastic and no matter how much beating they took, they did not bend, break or change color. The plastic is thick enough to stand use (and quite some abuse) and vibrations that any vehicle will put under normal driving situations. I have tested them under everyday life conditions (commute and daily driving) and I did a little bit of off-road "shake-up" tests. ARKON is the designer of the Dual-T mount pattern I was just referring to, which is used in all Magellan GPS units and other products from HP, Nokia, GlobalSat and ASUS. Products from other manufacturers can be used with either an adapter plate or a universal mount that has arms that can be pressed to hold any device. ARKON makes plenty of adapter plates to support most brands in the market, a few examples are the TomTom ONE, TomTom ONE XL and TomTom GO 520/720/920/530/730/930, Garmin Nuvi and Garmin Streetpilot series. Garmin uses normally a "ball" adapter where a sphere fits into a receiver and can look in any direction allowing it to move freely. ARKON also manufactures mounts and adapters for these devices as well where the ending of the mount has the "Garmin ball" connector instead of the "Dual-T" connector without the need of an adapter. The products I reviewed had either the "Dual-T" connector or the "Garmin ball" connector. These two types of connectors allow users to connect to all kinds of devices. Even though this set I got for testing was mainly for GPSs I was able to use them for any kind of device. I tried them for GPS units, smartphones, regular cell phones, touch-screen smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players, iPods, etc without any problems at all.

Aliph’s first generation Jawbone Bluetooth headset generated tons of interest when it came out three years ago. It was so unique looking that people took notice. It featured a futuristic, stealth-like design with a curve that followed one’s cheekbone. It was attractive in a borg-like way. You would expect those wearing them to have a battery compartment on their backs.

It also featured noise canceling technology approved by DARPA, which resulted in excellent audio quality.

The buttons were hidden within the design and some found them hard to press. It had no volume rocker so one had to cycle through the five volume settings.

Aliph just announced the New Jawbone, which is slimmer, lighter, and more fashionable. In fact, the designer of the Jawbone, Yves Behar, said,

“The Jawbone strategy we set-out to follow three years ago has proven that products that live on our face need to be designed differently than typical technology wares; we regard them as personal accessories or even jewelry, and, as such, believe they need to be a complete departure from the gadgetry of the mobile and headset industry.”

The new Jawbone is 50% smaller, features best in class noise elimination technology, “invisible buttons”, Touch-surface technology and a clutter free look, according to Jawbone.

So how did it fare in the real world?

The devices we choose to use in our everyday mobile life are generally pretty cool and for the most part satisfy our needs but it is the “peripheral” devices that enhance the enjoyment of the device. One such “peripheral” that is fast becoming mandatory for all of us to have is a Bluetooth hands free car kit . Most states today already have mandatory laws on using cell phones while driving and each month, another state joins those ranks. I would expect that soon we will see all states will have some sort of law on the books regarding the use of cell phones while driving.

In April, TRITTON Technologies announced the arrival of their AX Visor Universal Bluetooth car kit. It is a state-of-the-art speaker phone with caller ID display and had both unidirectional and omnidirectional microphones making communication while on the road seamless. I liked the device and posted a news item referencing its characteristics.

Shortly after that news item, a representative from Tritton called and referenced several of the previous reviews I had done and asked if I would be interested in getting a review unit to look at. I indicated that I was interested and within a few days the AX Visor was at my door waiting for me to experience its capabilities.

So if you are a AT&T Tilt or HTC TyTN II owner like me, you need a good way to get music out of your device and have a way to keep power going into it as well. TiltSite.com new writer Kristofer Brozio has got a great review posted on his Website, DragonSteelMods.com that is just the ticket! The HTC 3-in-1 Combo USB Adapter will handle all of your audio out and power in needs. I use mine in my Truck while driving to allow me to channel music into my Pioneer DEH-4900 Car Stereo. I use the 3.5mm audio in on the back of the deck and have my cord nicely routed underneath my dashboard. In fact, I have it routed through my car charger cord that is located at the bottom of my dashboard where my 12 volt source is. Works great using the HTC audio control with the HTC Home Plugin.

You can purchase the HTC 3-in-1 Combo USB Adapter for $13.99 from USBfever.com or by CLICKING HERE
