The device practically defines “no nonsense”. It sports the same tiny size as the rest of the Clip line, but now with 8 big Gigs of flash memory goodness.

Having owned one of the 2G models for several months now, I was very curious to see if SanDisk would have the consistency to stick with a winning design or if they would fall pray to the industry wide obsession with fixing what’s not broken.

It took me all of a day of use to find the answer…read more after the jump.

I have been playing with iRiver’s newest PMP offering, the SPINN for two weeks now, and am finally ready to put some of my meandering thoughts down concerning this fascinating new device. It is literally unlike any MP3 player I have ever used before and has been great fun to test.

For those of you who have missed reading about this device on the blogs or seeing one in the shops, the SPINN is a small PMP with a retro twist…a small analog wheel at one end that can be used in combination with the 3.5 inch AMOLED screen to do just about anything on your unit, at least according to iRiver.

The unusually striking design and mid-sized capacity (8G or 16G) puts the SPINN directly in line to compete with the new iPod Touches and Nanos and smaller Zune 2s. In that space, iRiver will have it’s work cut out for it, facing not only Apple and MS but the multi-headed Sansa line from SanDisk and a few stray Cowon devices. How does the SPINN turn out? Read on for my full review.

Ever since they branded their personal CD players with Walkman brand, they never went back to trying any other line. Although “Network Player” made a brief appearance for a while, it was again replaced by Walkman. Unfortunately Sony lost the battle of naming the third generation personal music players (first being Cassette, second CD and third Flash/Hard Drive) to Apple. Just like how everyone called every available cassette player “Walkman” now almost everyone who isn’t into gadgets call ever single PMP “ipod“. How many times did you have to tell them you don’t own an ipod, you own a Sony or Microsoft Zune or Sandisk, etc, and finally gave up and accepted iPod?
Well, enough with the melancholy, it is time to take a look at what we get with the package here:
- 1 Sony Walkman Unit
- 1 Software installation CD (Not Required)
- 1 Proprietary to Regular USB Cable
- 1 Extension Cable
- 1 Set of Earbuds with In-Ear foam insulation
- 1 Pair of Extra Insulation pads for ear buds
- 1 Plastic Stand
- Packaging Material
- Manual and Additional Printed Material

Competitively priced at $99.95 (2GB), $109.95 (4GB), and $159.95 (8GB), the Sony S610 Walkman digital media player offers excellent video playback, great audio quality, outstanding battery life, and (most significantly for a Sony product) freedom from SonicStage.

Its ease of use and simple user interface make it a nice choice for the younger crowd of MP3 enthusiasts that Sony is specifically targeting, but more advanced users and audiophiles may be unimpressed with the S610’s “new” features (video playback and drag-and-drop), which have been included as standard on other companies’ players for years.

Watch the part where she demonstrates the video, the two movies that she has encoded for test are the newest and coolest movies out. I watch both of them this past week. Surf’s Up and Evan Almighty. Both Excellent!

I’m fairly new to Bluetooth technology, and I spent over eight hours reading how to connect the headphones to the Axim. Nobody should have to work that hard. But that is not the fault of the headphone makers. Otherwise, the headphones were easy to connect to the other devices. The sound quality was surprisingly good, and the headphones were a joy to use. Having no wires to tangle things up really adds satisfaction to your listening pleasure. I truly feel that more high end headphones will turn to this technology. Last night I was cooking dinner for my three kids while I was listening to music and testing these headphones out. I let each child have a turn. No worry about wires. It’s a user friendly headphone.

FS1 High Definition Earphones deliver richer sound than you’ve ever heard before. Featuring a professional-grade audio driver designed by Future Sonics, they utilize technology developed exclusively for live music performances. The technology includes a dynamic transducer that provides smoother and more consistent low frequency response, as well as a more natural overall tone.

XtremeMac and Future Sonics, the leading manufacturer of personal monitors for professional musicians, bring you a new generation of professional audio technology. While other earphones use armature-type drivers-the same kind found in hearing aids-the FS1 earphones utilize proprietary drivers and technologies recently developed by Future Sonics.

Hear what you’ve been missing?
I have to admit that I have been a over the ear, big ear phone fan user for the most part and didn’t have much desire to give earbuds a chance. Last year, I tried out the Ear Subs from Headbanger Audio and was sold on the fact that deep bass could be accomplished in this smaller form factor. They had great bass, but the overall sound quality was not perfect and they were powered.

When I was reading all the positive press about these non-powered, $150.00 earbuds that boasts great bass response and full range sound, I had to give them a try to see what all the fuss was about. Read on to see if the fuss was worth it to me….

What do you get?

• 1 pair of FS1 High Definition Earphones
• 1 set of flanged comfort sleeves
• 2 sets of pliable foam comfort sleeves (Small & Large)
• 3 sets of bullet-style comfort sleeves (Small, Medium & Large)
• Earwax removal tool
• Zippered travel/carrying case
• Instruction manual
• One year limited warranty

As you can see in the photo above, the FS1 earphones come with an impressive carrying case and several tips to ensure a great seal in the ear.

The Test
When I ripped open the packaging and got them out and ready to rock, I had my Dell Axim x51v ready to go. I loaded up an intersting sound with a little it of everything as far as sounds, Going Back to Cali by Sevendust. No, this isn’t the original done by LL Cool J, this is a hard rocking remake by Sevendust with roaring guitar and plenty of bass. After 30 seconds, I was dissapointed. The bass response was terrible and the sound was hollow. Knowing that I had to have something wrong, I backed up and did something most of us don’t do, I read the instructions. Without getting technical, I will just say that the default tips that were installed did not provide a good seal in my ear canal. I tried the flange tips and they felt great, but not much better. Next I tried the larger foam inserts (comes in two sizes) and WOW, that did the trick. The sound difference was night and day. With both left and right ears plugged up, I could not even here my wife call me from 10 feet away either.

In the following days, I tried these earphones with the iPod and the Dell DJ and using the larger foam tips the rocking sounds continued. The FS1 earphones look very stylish as well as long as they are in your ears and not on top of your player. The foam inserts make the earphones like mighty goofy, but if these tips make the best seal for you as well, who cares! Check out the photo above right and you will see the tip removed and what they look like naked. The sound travels through the tip right to you ears while the tip provides a good seal from sound escaping and outside sounds from getting in there to ruin your jammin.

As I mentioned, the foam tips gave me the best sound. Other that I let try these out in the past couple weeks had the same results. With this, I did some digging online and most comments online are saying the same, great sound but the other tips are not needed.

Hear what you’ve been missing!
The tagline given by Xtrememac is accurate. As a test, take your standard earbuds and cue up Evanescence’s Bring me to Life and listen to the intro. Then start the song over and use these. There is something you are definitely missing with the earbuds. If you are not familiar with this song, there is some rumbling bass in the intro that you do not get with poor bass response. Listening to several types of music, there was many little background effects in songs that I just never noticed before.

Specs:

• Transducer 10mm, Future Sonics MG5 Proprietary Miniature Dynamic
• Input Sensitivity +/-112dB @ 30Hz/1mW
• Cable Length 43.3 inches/1100mm
• Connector 3.5mm (1/8″) standard stereo mini-plug; 90-degree angle
• Noise Isolation +/-25dB (using foam sleeves)
• Impedance 32 ohms
• Frequency Response 20Hz-20KHz

Conclusion
If you can justify the price tag and value your listening experience, they are worth it and you should give them a try. I am sure that there are many that would balk at the price tag, but when compared to more expensive headphones, they do stack up. What I like the most is that you do not have to BLAST them to get this full ranged sound. At low to moderate volumes, you can still "hear" everything except co-workers.

PROS

Superb full range sound

One size fits all with multiple sized tips

Bass reponse is great

CONS

Other than the foam tips, the other tips don’t cut it for most that have tried them.

Price

"I have just got to start off saying that I am amazed by this thing. iPods have become so popular and I am always getting asked why I don’t have one. I have always said because my Pocket PC works well enough to play all the music I need. Now that I have had the chance to play with one, I don’t know that I can go back to just using my PPC"
