Developer/Vendor: Hewlett Packard (Hewlett Packard)
Price: $449.99 (MSRP)
Rating (3 out of 5):

I watched Chris unbox the HP 310 Travel Companion here. I’m not going to add a lot of screenshots of the system in this review, for two reasons: 1) it doesn’t have the ability to take screenshots natively and you cannot install any third party software to do so, and 2) it doesn’t follow any standard for connecting to a PC, so you cannot use any of the third party remote desktop software to capture the screen. Chris’ video shows the screen resolution and most of the menus, so I encourage you to watch the unboxing.

I really wanted to like this device. And when I first powered it up, I was really impressed. The screen is big, bright and very smooth. The unit itself is a sleek, good looking device, and the window mount is sturdy. I figured it all would look really nice in my car. It does look nice, but unfortunately, the performance of it as a navigation system doesn’t match the good looks.

Testing Environment

I tested the unit in my car, in my basement and in various locations in Northern Virginia.

Garmin has for years had a PDA/GPS combination based on the Palm operating system. Now they have entered the Windows Mobile arena with three units, the M3, M4 and M5 PDA. This review covers the middle model, the M4.

The M4 is a good design, with a solid function as a Windows Mobile PDA, but also works well as an integrated GPS using the Garmin City Navigator North America NT software preinstalled and all maps already installed. Out of the box, this device is GPS ready! This image shows the M5 model, but all three are essentially the same size and shape, with the differences being in speed, maps installed and the availability of Bluetooth.

The Test
The box contained the Garmin itself, with an integrated screen cover, power adapters for wall charging and car charging, cables to connect it all together and a stylish windshield mount to hold it in place in view of the driver. The GPS is integrated into the PDA itself, contained in a flip up patch on the back of the PDA. You can see it deployed in the picture. As soon as you release the catch to allow the antenna to flip up, the GPS turns on and the City Navigator software starts. The software and maps are pre-installed in internal memory that is in addition to the typical PDA memory. On the M4, you get North America, including the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. The M5 also includes South America. European and Pacific Rim basemaps are available from Garmin.

Garmin has been in the navigation business for a long time, and the software maturity shows it. The user interface is easy to understand, and the map displays are beautiful. Here are some screen shots:

This the first screen you get when the antenna is flipped up. Pretty straightforward–either tell it where you want to go, or just view the map to see where you are.

I’m not going to show every options, but you can see from these two screens that you can customize the software in a lot of ways to make it suit your needs. Changing one of these options is as simple as tapping the current setting and either watch it toggle from one to another, or pick you choice from a list. There are lots and lots of options to set!

When you are ready to navigate, you can manage all of your data from this screen:

You can store your own locations, save and restore routes, manage your tracks of previous trips, navigate to your contacts list, choose the map you want and even add custom POI datasets. The Tracks of your previous trips can be displayed on the map, if you’d like, or hidden from view. Once you decide where to go, the route is quickly planned and you get crisp clear directions from the screen and clear guidance in a great voice. Here are the day and night screens showing a route planned:

As you can see, the screen shows your speed, altitude, time to go to the next turn and time of ETA across the top of the screen. The directed route is shown in a high visibility magenta color that works for both day and night. What you cannot see from the screen shots is that the Garmin has an option in the overall operating system to have a different screen brightness setting for day and night, so when the screen flips from day to night, not only does the software change, the screen brightness also shifts. That combination makes for a very easy transition from day to night. The screen also shows you where you are and where the next turn will take you. In this case, you are on Heatherford Court and the next turn will take you onto Heatherford Place. The dpad button zooms in and out so that you can choose the scale you want. I found the 800ft scale to be good for me, combining a good detail with a pretty good "look ahead" distance.

If you just want to follow your location, you can do that. The screen changes slightly:

As you can see, in the GPS following mode, you get information on the direction you are heading (099), your speed (0 mph) and your general location (Centreville, VA). You also get the status of your fix. On the bottom of the screen, the two icons are an arrow that will take you to the menu screens and a speaker icon that will force the system to repeat the current verbal directions. You also get an arrow showing where North is and icons for any POI that happen to be nearby. Just below the scale bar you will be able to see if the map has full detail or is at a summary level. As you zoom out to show more area, the details are automatically suppressed.

In operation the system is easy to use and the directions are clearly spoken and displayed. The Sirf GPS receiver is very sensitive, and is WAAS enabled. It consistently got the first fix in a few seconds. WAAS was nice, but isn’t really required for road navigation.

There were a couple of problems. The main one was that the City Navigator software would "crash out" to the Today screen and the GPS would be displayed as "off" with no input from the user. I couldn’t figure out what caused the problem, as it wasn’t that consistent. It also didn’t happen that often (only three times in three weeks of testing), so it was difficult to see what was the common element in the failures. The good news in this failure was that if you tapped the GPS bar on the today screen the GPS would immediately restart and the City Navigation software would resume exactly where you were, with your route still in place, the directions still in place and as soon as the GPS got a fix (a couple of seconds) you got solid tracking again. Other than being unpredictable and having to tap the GPS bar to get it going again, this problem was more of an annoyance than a fatal flaw, although it would be nice if Garmin could fix the problem. I did look at the Garmin website for any update, and did a search of the web, but found nothing. Maybe Garmin will find the cause and update the software.

As a PDA, the Garmin was good, but not great. The speed of the processor is not the highest you can buy today, although the M5 does increase to 412 MHz for the main processor and adds a coprocessor dedicated to the GPS function. Those improvements should make the M5 a bit snappier in operations. The PDA came with the standard suite of Microsoft products, including contacts, PIE, Pocket Word and Excel, Media Player and others. I did install some software to do the screen captures and file explorer. Installation went well, and the software worked perfectly. I didn’t install a lot of stuff, and none of them were Today plug ins, but the system seemed to work well.

There is an SD slot for additional storage capacity. The screen has a flip-up screen cover that protected the screen in normal use. When you need to use the PDA, you flip the screen down and behind the PDA to expose the screen. To use the cradle, you flip the screen cover behind and it all fits perfectly. The fit and function was excellent, and the quality of manufacture was typical Garmin excellence. Battery life was pretty good at 5-6 hours.

Conclusion
Cost of this unit may seem high, but consider that for the price you get a PDA, a GPS receiver, Navigation software, windshield mount, and a car power supply. Compare that singly cost to the cost of buying those parts separately and the Garmin M-series is a great way to go!

Super Convergence – Super Price tag
Do you want the best? Get ready to spend lots to get the best. The imate JasJar offers almost everything one could as for in a converged device. Excuse me while I ramble off the key points that make this the closest to perfect convergence devices around : VGA, WM5, Dual Cameras, Swivel Screen, Full Keyboard, and more! Being able to use this device in many ways is awesome. You can set it on a table and use it like a mini-laptop, flip the screen around and use it like a regular PocketPC, or leave it closed and make and receive all your calls via Bluetooth headset. There are a few drawbacks though, this thing is big and bulky! In addition, as a PocketPC guy more so than a phone guy, I find the Processor a tad bit limited for the power it is capable of. Last but not least, boy is it pricey. $1200 for a Phone/PocketPC is steep.

X51v – The newest offering from Dell!
OK, Dell has done it again. Last year, they were 1st to market with a unit with Windows Mobile 2003 SE, this year they are the 1st Pocket PC to market with WM5 in the US.

This new offering from Dell is not a new device, but instead it is a retooling of the successful X50v. The X50v was one of the first VGA Pocket PC devices to hit the streets. What’s the big deal then? The big deal is that this X51v has the new OS from Microsoft, Windows Mobile 5 installed. In addition, they have bumped up the ROM to 256mb.

VGA!
This past year, the most anticipated PocketPC feature was a VGA Screen. From late July when other new iPAQs were announced to now, it seemed that the hx4715 (model number early reports had labeled the 4700/4705) created a big fuss. Preorders everywhere and no official word from HP to tell us when it was to be officially released. The wait was killing many members of iPaqHQ.com as well as others, some even gave up and went other routes. Finally, they are stocked at online outlets and stores. Was it worth the wait to me? Yes. While its not likely to become my everyday PDA, it is packed with some great features and has a marvelous screen.

The iPAQ HX4700/4705 series is one of the first PocketPCs with a VGA Screen. The ASUS A730 is the only other PocketPC available in the United States and it has a 3.7 inch screen. The Toshiba 830 and the VGA version of the Loox are available in Europe and the rumored Dell Axim X50 is expected to be released in the US soon.

VGA?
A picture can answer that question better than I can!

Photo taken with same light, same distance , and max brightness

Introduction
"Why is this site reviewing a 5 month old PDA? That is old news!" – Admit it, that’s what you are thinking. Right? Well, I’ll answer anyway. In case you are unaware, iPaqHQ.com is a new site, it was created a few months after the h5550 came out. Now we have to go back and catch up so we can provide the most info for our community as we can. In fact the pending arrival of this Pocket PC is why I finally decided to create the site.

I received this unit a week ago and it has only been outside of arms reach a few hours. Yes, I even slept with it under my pillow to see if the alarm works. I obviously have not run into the dead alarm trouble that many have complained about. It works just fine for me. Of course, I silenced it and fell back asleep anyhow. 3-4 hours of sleep a night is rough I tell you.

What is in the Box?
This is the 1st thing most want to know. What does all this cash get me.

It’s a Pocket PC, that’s it
I am not 100% sure, but I believe this machine is to be marketed towards new customers as an entry level Pocket PC. This unit is referred to by HP as the HP iPAQ rz1715 Mobile Media Companion. The rz1715 is the lowest price iPAQ to be sold by HP, but this lower cost brings some shortcuts. Last year’s iPAQ h1945 was offered for $20 more, but was smaller, felt to be of better quality, had more memory, and at least had Bluetooth. In this review, I will cover the design, features, performance, and value of this machine.

"Get the entertainment essentials you need at a superb value with the sleek HP iPAQ rz1715 mobile media companion. You’ll soon be viewing and passing along photos and music from your patio chair, listening to your favorite songs in transit to appointments or on vacation, and staying on top of your schedule, "to-do" list, and contact info with the handy personal information manager (PIM)." – Hewlett Packard

The moment we’ve all been waiting for?
There has been a huge amount of anticipation building on the VGA Handheld. A couple other companies beat Dell to the punch, but Dell seems to be countering with a right hook by undercutting the price point of its competitors. Comparatively, the Dell Axim X50v and the HP HX4700 are a fairly different, but many features are consistant in both.

The new "Sleek" Axim
Forget the X50v, the X50 Mid comes with a 520mhz, 64mb RAM, 128mb ROM, Dual memory slots, and a nice sleek design. The only thing wrong with the Mid is that it does not sport the 3.7" VGA Screen. Benchmark results show that the X50 Mid is just a hair below the performance of the X30 High.

Rocket Powered!
Since this is the 1st 624mhz Pocket PC, there is nothing to compare benchmark scores with at this time, But I compared it to the older machines it is"Smoking"! What is the perfect PocketPC? That is a question that will never be answered, there are too many opposing views and usage patterns for that to ever be accomplished. Today, Dell released the closest to my perfect PocketPC to date. It sports the fastest processor available at this time, SDIO SD Slot, a small and light form factor, Bluetooth and WiFi, and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Other than a few features that some find a must, it has everything I want in a PocketPC. The only real complaint offhand is the look. I mentioned in my X3i review last year that I really wish that Dell would have duplicated the modern, unique look of the X5 when they design the X3. Just in case you have not figured it out yet, the Dell Axim X30 is the same as the X3i with some major enhancements.

What do you get?
Out of the box you will get basically the same items with whatever package you choose. You will obviously get the actual unit you ordered and if you choose the Mid or Low Configuration, you will receive a sync cable instead of a cradle. Good news, the cradle and the connector on the unit is also the same as the X3i. I do not need a fourth different cradle on my desk.

Introduction
With the Axim X5, Dell vaulted into the Pocket PC world, capturing 37% of the market in less than one year. One of the most apparent reasons for this instant user base has to be the price. The Dell Axim X5’s price was a refreshing change to the $400.00 plus Pocket PCs. Those that did not like the X5 complained about the lack of SDIO availability and called the X5 names like “a brick”. At 5 ounces, the Axim X3 is 28 percent lighter than its predecessor, and at .55 inches, 17 percent thinner. I personally love the looks of the X5 and you can not complain about the price at all, but I too desire a smaller PPC.

Enter the Dell Axim X3, smaller, thinner, lighter, SDIO availability and even built in wireless. This addresses all the major complaints of non-Axim supporters. Knowing the Pocket PC community and its loyalty to certain companies, many will find a new list of complaints with the X3 also. Even Dell Axim X5 owners are already complaining about the lack of the CF slot. This does not bother me at all considering I rarely use my CF slot anyway and when I do it is for WiFi, which comes built in on the higher end model.

The X3 comes in 3 flavors, Basic (300mhz w/ 32mb RAM and 32mb ROM), Advanced (400mhz w/ 64mb RAM and 64mb ROM), and the Advanced w/ WiFi (400mhz w/ 64mb RAM and 64mb ROM).

What is in the Box?
Opening the box, I received the following:

The Dell Axim X3 Advanced w/ WiFi

Standard 950mah battery

Cradle and Power Cord

Leather Case

Companion CD

Users Manual

Quick Start Guide

While I also received a few extras from Dell, they will not be focused on in this review.

The unit came with a nice protective film over the display for protection. Since I already had ActiveSync loaded up, I did not even install anything off the CD initially. After the initial 4 hour charge, all I was worried about was powering this light little puppy up. Later I checked out the CD to see what sort of surprises I had missed. The CD had an upgraded version of Outlook. The X5 came with Outlook 2000 and this model comes with Outlook 2002. Also the most current version of ActiveSync (3.7) is on the CD.(Note : Version 3.7.1 is available now online ). In addition to those upgrades, the CD also contains the following:
