Windows Mobile Kiosks Popping up at malls…

Looks like Microsoft is finally pushing Windows Phone some. There are kiosks popping up at malls. My guess is that HTC or one of the carriers are pushing it though. I wouldn’t expect Microsoft to do this. Have you seen this in your area? Besides this one, I saw Chuong Nguyen post on Twitter about seeing one recently too.

Black Friday!

Me, I didn’t get anything. I had to work. My wife spent time online shopping though. Nothing to note really. I get enough junk throughout the year that this day isn’t that special to me personally. I have enjoyed seeing all the lines via twitter photos!

I am not going to say much about this, but if you are interested, hit the jump to see. It’s not all that bad, it involves a little foul language, but hey… I know some might not appreciate it. I find it’s funny and props to the guy that took the time to get it set up.

Merging
In other news, I am going to go forward with merging iPhoneMVP and GotZune into Mobilitysite. I will provide some filtering of content as well as separate RSS feeds. I won’t do this until I have it set up right. Really though, Zune news is slow unless it’s launch time and iPhone News is everywhere already. What we’ll have for iPhone is mostly reviews, tutorials, and commentary.

Our anniversary (I am going to quit calling it a Birthday) is coming soon. So far we have 5 Pantech Matrix Pro Smartphones and an HTC Snap to give away. More to come…

Droid and HD2

Beyond Gaming: Watching TV on Your Xbox

There’s probably nothing much further from mobility than being a couch potato. However, technology is technology. Since many of us into mobile devices are also using gaming consoles I thought I’d pass along an article in today’s Wall Street Journal..

“For many consumers…videogame consoles appear to be the go-to living-room device—particularly for those who already own one of them. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have already sold over 45 million units collectively, according to the companies. That compares with the 5.3 million networked TVs, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes estimated to be sold by the end of this year….

‘Active game consoles have a lot of momentum because they’re already attached to televisions…they are a part of the family.’

Analysts also say that part of the reason why consoles have become such a popular way of viewing streaming video from the Internet is that cable and satellite companies have been slow to embrace such services.”

iPhone App Review – Business Card Reader

Normally, I won’t be posting application reviews for the iPhone here on Mobilitysite, but this one is a special case. This one is too cool to only share with iPhoneMVP.com readers. Enjoy!

So, have you ever let a stack of business cards get like this?

Yep, that’s just 1/2 of the business cards I have stacked up around here. I’ve gone to 2-4 trade shows per year for the last 6 years. Every show, I come back and expect to take time to enter in all the cards I gather on that trip. Well, you guessed it, I never do. They pile up and turn into stacks like this. These are from late 2008 and 2009. I was interested in this software to try to knock this stack down to nothing. When a friend of mine, Wayne Schulz posted about this, I had to give it a try. Gimmick or real? Let’s see.

Asus Makes a Super Computer

OK, this isn’t really mobile technology, but it is vaguely relevant and made me smile so I am posting it.

Asustek Computer announced, in a departure from it’s normal focus on budget minded consumer products, it’s very first supercomputer this week. It is called the ESC 1000 and doesn’t use an Atom. The ESC 1000 hits computing speeds of up to 1.1 trillion flops (floating point operations a second). Just for perspective, a standard chip like a Centrino hits around 4 billion flops, and an Atom manages around 2 billion flops. Computers like the ESC 1000 are typically used for medical and scientific purposes, or for really kicking butt at Halo III.

Am I very bad for wishing Asus had called this new machine the Asus EeeXtreme?

Microsoft Rethinks Family Guy Tie-In

Well, here’s another shocker. After looking over the script and attending the actual taping of "Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show" starring Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein, Microsoft pulled out of their somewhat controversial (and heavily mocked) sponsorship of the show. This sponsorship was to include no commercials, but include marketing spots for Win 7 worked right into the show itself. The show will go on Nov 8th, but Fox is looking for a new sponsor.

Says Microsoft…

"We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of ‘Family Guy,’ but after reviewing an early version of the variety show, it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand.”

So what content “didn’t fit with the Windows brand”? Well…

I have Google Voice Now, Guess my number!

It’s (xxx)468-9863. What does that spell?

If you haven’t tried Google Voice, it seems like a pretty cool service. You get a number, give it to people just like you would any other number and you have the number forwarded to your phone number.

The way I feel this is going to be super useful to me is setting it up as my number, assign my cell number to it. When I get a new phone to review that comes with service from another carrier, often a Seattle or Texas number, I just add it to the 20 numbers I can add. That way I never miss a call when I am testing a review device.

I’m Going to Tweet a Book with Neil Gaiman

For Halloween, big time Twitter enthusiast and bigger time author Neil Gaiman (one half of Gaimanda) is working with BBC Audiobooks to create a collaborative short story, written by Gaiman and no less than a thousand co-authors using Twitter.

Here is the press release from the BBC about the project, which strikes me as a great way to use Twitter creatively…at least it sure beats most tweets, like “Late to work again, fell asleep on highway”.

This Halloween, BBC Audiobooks America (@BBCAA) is offering a treat for Twitter audiophiles: the chance to write a story with fantasy master Neil Gaiman. The New York Times bestselling author of The Graveyard Book and Twitter enthusiast (known as @neilhimself) will launch an original story-writing project on the popular social networking site October 13 at Noon EST.

Gaiman will tweet the first line of the story and fans can jump in and continue it with their own 140-character contributions. To participate, fans must log into Twitter (registration is free) and post in this format: @BBCAA Your Tweet Here #bbcawdio. Follow the story unfolding at #bbcawdio for minute-by-minute updates.

BBC Audiobooks America will compile the contributions of approximately one thousand tweets into a finished short story to be recorded by a professional narrator. The audiobook will be downloadable free athttp://www.BBCAudiobooksAmerica.com/trade and also available as a digital download at iTunes and other audiobook retailers in time for the holidays.

Freedom Wins One

Some of you may remember the controversy over China’s Green Dam censorship software, which was required to be installed on every PC sold in China. Far fewer of you will likely remember my call to boycott those PC vendors who were voluntarily complying with that request, even once the Chinese government had begun to respond to global protests against it.

Well, it seems that freedom of speech, expression and thought on the net has won a major victory as all PC vendors have stopped bundling the software with China-bound PCs and the Chinese government has reportedly effectively dropped all plans to enforce use of the software, designed ostensibly to filter out pornography but also used for removing political discussion as well as to monitor users.

Accord to Industry Standard…

Lenovo, Acer and Sony have all stopped bundling the program, named Green Dam Youth Escort, with PCs sold in China, the companies said. The companies were among the few that went ahead with plans to distribute the software after China softened its order for PC makers to do so.

In another sign of fading enforcement, at least one Chinese high school has removed Green Dam from its computers after the software caused "severe conflicts" with programs used for roll and grading.

Personally I think it was all due to my call for a boycott. GOOD JOB MOBILITYSITE READERS!
