Don’t get me wrong, Gizmodo puts out some good opinions, reviews, scoops, and all but they’re not really known for putting out “guides”. I am glad they are out of the stage of publicizing any sex related gadget that they could find though and doing stuff like the post I am going to mention here. Anyhow, today I found a really interesting sounding post over on Jason Langridge’s blog. This post goes over how to do a back up on Windows Mobile, Android, Palm WebOS, Symbian, Blackberry, and iPhone. Most that have smartphones running one of those operating systems probably already know how to back up their phone, but this handy guide is still quite helpful.

A little over a year ago Chris posted a piece about the Swype software, and yet here is Swype again attempting to change consumers’ perspectives on typing using software keyboards. Since my introduction to software keyboards came in the form of the near-microscopic keys in Windows Mobile 6.0, I was slow to adopt the prediction-correction-ridden virtual-boards. The correction software on even the iPhone still throws me for a loop, and yet Samsung decides to turn convention on its head to welcome the 2009 holiday season with Swype on the Samsung Omnia II for Verizon.

Seems some are having speaker problems with the new Droid phone in which a reboot seems to fix it for a while. Here is what Engadget has to say:

It’s no reason to panic just yet, but apparently a good amount of people are having trouble with the external speaker on their Motorola Droid cutting out for no reason. It seems to be software-related, and sometimes a reboot fixes it temporarily, but it’s a scary problem for people relying on the handset as an alarm clock (or, you know, to receive calls), since you never know when it will strike next. For its part it seems that Motorola is replacing handsets that have the issue, though that’s no guarantee of escape from the clutches of silence. Let’s hope Motorola updates us with a software patch or some other serious solution soon — people need to hear that robotic "Droooiiid" alert sound — and meanwhile let us know if you’ve been seeing a similar issue.

Engadget is taking a poll so if you are having issues head on over and vote

Next up is Microsoft’s support for developers to help fight piracy…

We’ve been gathering input on what we can do to improve the developer experience and have made some subtle but important enhancements to the developer portal to enable easier uploading of images, greater insight into account status and several other refinements based on feedback from developers.
This is just a quick reminder that Softmaker’s special sale for their office applications on Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) ends two days from now. They are offering TextMaker 2008, PlanMaker 2008, and SoftMaker Presentations 2008 for Windows Mobile for $9.99 each.

If you haven’t yet used Softmaker Office on your Windows Mobile device, then you may want to consider it … it has been an invaluable tool for me and now because of their price, it certainly is something you should consider. I am convinced that you will like it.

It appears that Apple is not content just breaking the ability of the Palm Pre to sync with iTunes. They are apparently expanding their vandalism habit to confront another “misuse” of their software which they have long expressed displeasure about…hackintoshing.

One blogger is stating that the new beta seed of Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard) no longer supports the Intel Atom chipset, used by almost all netbooks and notebooks customarily used for hackintoshing. Hackintoshing is the installation of the Mac OS on a piece of non-Apple hardware, such as a netbook. Users often claim that they do this because Apple thus far refuses to release a ultra-portable or netbook version of their popular MacBooks. Cupertino has never been amused but has turned a mostly blind eye to the practice…until now.

It is unclear just HOW incompatible the new OS X beta is with Atom chips, but certainly at least the functions that required unofficial KEXT files to function, such as Sleep Mode, won’t work any more. Apple has made clear they will not be using Atom chips for any devices (preferring ARM chips for mobile computing) so there is no reason for them to strive to support them. The question is whether they spiked Atom support intentionally or if it just happened. Since we seem to be on the cusp of an Apple Tablet, I would have to say they DID break hackintosh possibilities with malice aforethought. After all, Apple will want to make sure that anyone who craves a smaller Mac-based device pays the (no doubt hefty) price for this new product.

Of course eventually some clever clogs will write new KEXT files or work arounds to make hackintoshing possible again, but does anyone really want to see yet another cat and mouse game between Apple and hackers. It seems to be there must be people at Apple who do nothing all day but try to break hacks at this point, between the ongoing war with the iPhone Dev Team, and of course the battle against Palm over iTunes. Do they have any TIME to create an Apple Tablet?

Yep, that’s just 1/2 of the business cards I have stacked up around here. I’ve gone to 2-4 trade shows per year for the last 6 years. Every show, I come back and expect to take time to enter in all the cards I gather on that trip. Well, you guessed it, I never do. They pile up and turn into stacks like this. These are from late 2008 and 2009. I was interested in this software to try to knock this stack down to nothing. When a friend of mine, Wayne Schulz posted about this, I had to give it a try. Gimmick or real? Let’s see.

Access is a leader of software for mobile and other devices such as Sony’s PSP and Sony’s newest WiFi ready Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 camera announced earlier this year at CES 2009, which allows for photos to be wirelessly transferred to computers and televisions that are DLNA-capable. The company’s mobile software, which has concentrated mainly on a business-to-business level with electronics companies, has facilitated messaging, email, digital mobile television, digital radio, and widgets on devices from clamshell handsets from Motorola and Samsung to phones like the Palm Centro, and Treo 600 Series for years. Now they are excited to announced that their NetFront line of software, such as the NetFront Mobile Browser, is poised for major expansion into the United States.

It seems that Canonical’s founder and CEO Mark Shuttleworth is well aware of how badly Linux in general but especially Ubuntu has blown the golden opportunity presented by netbooks up until now and is eager to change that fact.

When netbooks first burst on the scene, most of the early models ran open source Linux distros such as Ubuntu and the devices were expected to finally introduce Linux to mainstream consumers. However, something went wrong along the way. Turned off by the often arcane and unfamiliar Linux, users began demanding Windows versions even though they cost more and vendors obliged. Despite creating quite polished and critically acclaimed netbook versions, Ubuntu was left on the hobbyist sidelines again.

However, the release of Windows 7, and Microsoft’s decision to offer a “Starter Version” of the OS for netbooks has given Ubuntu’s new version a chance to try to stack up against Windows again, with several interesting new features.
