Southwest Airlines, Surprise Mobility….

So, I use Southwest Airlines for a couple reasons when i fly to Vegas. The main reason is the direct flight from Birmingham to Vegas and the other is the fact that they are one of the last airlines left that do not charge for luggage. I got ready to fly home from Vegas last night and I was bummed with the Michigan St. vs Uconn game starting. We got on the plane a couple minutes into the game. We got airborne and 10 minutes later, we got an announcement that just added a 3rd reason to fly Southwest, IN FLIGHT WIFI…

Brochure in the seat pouch, WiFi found at 10k feet, Live Basketball in flight!!!

Yes, In Flight WiFi. The 1st thing I did was popped onto my iPhone to check it out, I took the middle snapshot, uploaded it to Flickr and then tweeted about the coolness of in flight WiFi. Then I realized… MARCH MADNESS (in April). I jumped over to CBSSportsline.com and caught the end of the 1st game and we (myself and passengers in seats around me) watched the 1st half of the North Carolina vs Villanova game before we touched down in Birmingham. Too Cool!

Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20 Video 1st Look

AT&T’s Nokia N71 Hands On

If you are willing to step outside our Windows Mobile confort zone and the slim, QWERTY is up your alley, then the Nokia N71 could be up your alley. This thing is quite light and just as then as the HTC Snap that was announced today. I know that I have been trying to get outside of just using Windows Mobile myself. I had a brief time with a few Nokia devices today and plan to get some more intimate time later this week.

Samsung SWD-M100

I have to ask Samsung what is up with their model numbers. Come on, call it something cool like the Samsung Propel. SWD-M100 just doesn’t have a ring to it. After a little time playing with this thing while tethered, I think it’s a nice little device. It’s more like a powerful Pocket PC like phone than a UMPC or a MID or whatever we are calling it. Enjoy a little eye candy here…

Hands On With The HTC Snap

Thin and light. That’s all you need to know about the Snap. Seriously. I got some more time with this hot HTC Windows Mobile Smartphone that HTC announced today. I think this is going to be quite hot. Think about how hot the Dash could have been, throw some more experience at making smartphones in, and Windows Mobile and you a serious contender to the Nokia E71, the BlackJack devices, and even the Blackberries. Anyhow, here are a few photos I grabbed today.

HTC Snap – The Dash, Just Better

Here you are my friends, the HTC Snap. This is the new and improved T-Mobile Dash on steroids. HTC built this one based on the input and desires of enthusiasts and to me, it looks like they have hit a HOMERUN! It’s got a full qwerty keyboard, running Windows Mobile 6.1, 256MB ROM & 192MB RAM, MicroSD Slot, 1500mAh battery, all the HSDPA and such you can handle, 2 Megapixel camera, and even a Blackberry’ish trackball. What else do you need?

I will have some more hands on with this later today and hope to have a nice set of photos and possible video 1st look. Thin, light, and speedy are the keys here.

HTC Touch Pro 2 Hands On

I got a chance to play around with a few of HTC’s hot new phones tonight. Of the 3, the HTC Touch Pro 2 was the hottest. I totally want one of these now. The look and feel make me wanna toss my Fuze in a river now.

A Little Intimate Time with the HTC Magic

AT&T Drops 6 Bombs Today – Some WinMo Too…

Ok, CTIA kicks off tomorrow (well technically Wednesday, but..), but AT&T has jumped out front of the crowd by announcing 6 new phones today.

The Samsung Propel Pro is the one I has waiting on checking out. It’s a WinMo slider. It will be available in a couple weeks for $149.99 with contract. One of the hottest items all around the blogoshere has been the Nokia E71x. It’s a super thin phone with a full qwerty. To be honest, I am digging it’s Blackjackish looks!

Skype for iPhone: It’s official

Sorry Cnet, I just cut and pasted your title. There is not better way of putting it though. This is apparently going to be released and made available from iTunes on Tuesday at CTIA, but Cnet got some time with it a touch early.

Months after teasing us at CES with an announcement of Skype’s native VoIP client for the iPhone, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday.

CTIA 2009 – What to Expect?

That’s a good question and one that Phone Arena has taken some time to speculate/formulate. Between the 4 scheduled events that have HTC in the title that I have setup for next week, I plan to hit the floor and mingle with some carrier PR folks, but what exactly is going to drop that is new and/or jaw dropping? One of the lingering issues that CTIA has suffered the last couple years is that it follows shortly behind MWC. That kind of makes it a choice for companies when they decided when to announce something. It seems many companies have been choosing the larger, earlier show, MWC. I sure hope that something hot is announced this year, if not, it’s Vegas… I have poker and roulette to fall back on.

Anyhow, Phone Arena is thinking that we may see something on Sprint’s rumored G2, maybe the Touch Diamond on Verizon, but the they are doubting that AT&T will show or announce the rumored Samsung BlackJack 3. We shall soon see. Phone Arena also warns that nothing they talk about is a sure thing…

Well, bear in mind this article is based on information that´s still being kept under wraps and we cannot entirely stand behind it, we will as likely as not see these phones, so heads up, you´ve been warned.

Mainly, I expect news on a ton of non winmo, no “smartphone” handsets. Tons of mobile service (which we don’t cover much) and software ideas. I will be using the Samsung Omnia and it’s 5 Mega Pixel camera to snap some photos for my Flickr feed. I decided not to post each one to the site automagicly like I did for CES. I got some complaints about spamming the RSS feed with them. Instead, I will just post them to this set on Flickr (CTIA 2009 – Las Vegas).

Samsung Omnia and CTIA Wireless 2009 in Las Vegas

What do they have in common? They are both going to be in Las Vegas April 1st to the 4th, along with myself. I will be attending the CTIA Wireless Convention in Vegas. I try to attend at least 1 of these shows each year.

I am putting this out here early this time. If you want to meet up in Vegas, let me know now. Let’s set something up. I normally get a couple emails after an event saying that they would love to have had a drink with me if they’d have known I was in town. I’m letting you know now. April 1st – April 5th, 2009, I will be in Las Vegas and I will be staying at the Harrah’s Hotel and Casino.

The Samsung Omnia is nothing new, in fact, it’s been out for quite a while now. Since I am just now gearing back up in the Mobile world again, I have got my hands on an Omnia for review and plan on taking it with me for the CTIA Wireless convention in Vegas at the next month. I plan on taking advantage of the 5megapixel camera built during my coverage of this show.

I plan to provide some photos and video of the Omnia soon. I haven’t opened the box yet, but reading about this phone for so long, I am sure I am going to like it.
