This is life around the luxurious Mobilitysite offices these days…another week, another metric tonnage of Tablet announcements. This week we have more concrete information on the offerings from two anticipated new Tablet vendors; Research in Motion and Sharp. However, as the market scrambles desperately for some kind, ANY kind of differentiator for all these vaporware Tablets, each has a few surprises and a certain...

Amazon has been having a VERY good week. It took a big, Apple-style gamble coming out with new Kindle hardware when the ebook war is being fought so fiercely and intently…and it paid off. Rather than being turned off by being asked to buy a new version of the popular device, Kindle fans are lapping up the Kindle 3 in record numbers and are applauding its improved screen and lighter weight.
Amazon is publically crowing...

It is easy to dismiss the improved contrast on the Kindle DX to be a minor improvement for what is an essentially failed product. It has already alienated it’s target audience, academia, and made no progress at bringing the features they had most requested (except for better organization). With no touch screen, no ability to mark up texts directly, and slow and clumsy searching, college test release after college test...

I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop for days now. Amazon responded to the challenges of the iPad and the price war started by Borders and Barnes & Noble with a major price cut for their Kindle device. That was wise and all well and good, and shores up the Kindle device a bit, but didn’t address the challenge that iBooks is posing to the Kindle software…the Kindle software that is essential for driving...

So is this just a sign of the times, or an indication that Amazon is responding to the pressure from that 22 percent of the market that Steve Jobs said at WWDC that iBooks has stolen?
Whichever, it sure is interesting that Amazon has taken something which previously they and all other online ebook stores had been treating as a dirty little secret and moved it to a prominent role on their website. They used to treat it...

Well, low and behold the ebook reader war is finally heating up in earnest. Since the iPad began shaking things up two month ago, all sorts of ebook developments have arisen. First Borders finally comes into the ebook market, and they come in as if the future of the company depends on it (cause, well…it sort of does), offering multiple ebook readers, one as cheap as $119! Next, clearly feeling a bit of heat, Barnes...

The Boston Globe today says changes are coming to Amazon’s Kindle ebook hardware. Citing the always popular “two people familiar with its plans”, the Globe says we may be seeing a new Kindle as early as this August. We have not seen new hardware from Amazon since the release of the DX, even as rival Sony has released new Reader models and many new competitors have entered the field, most notably the Barnes &...

As usual, we have lots of news about Ebook and Ebook Readers to start the week.
First of all a fairly slick looking new Ebook is now available for order in the US from Dulin, called the PocketBook 360. Running Linux on a Samsung 400Mhz processor, the 360 has a five inch Vizplex screen, both SDHC and MicroSDHC slots and can read EPUB, PDF and most other major formats, including DOC and CHM. At 240 dollars, I don’t expect...

Who needs a standalone Kindle? I sure don’t now that the iPhone app has been updated. One of the things that the device had which the iPhone app was lacking was highlighting and note taking. Well, kiss those days good bye.
“With Kindle for iPhone 1.2, you can now tap and hold a word to create a note or highlight. Whispersync will back up and synchronize annotations with your Kindle device.”
I have tested...

In a somewhat surprise move, Apple sent out an email to developers today with an announcement regarding in app purchases. Now, even free apps can have in app purchases. When this feature was announced, I thought that the decision to make it paid apps only was stupid to begin with as there were many apps that have a good reason to be free but allow for an in app purchase. One that I immediately...

Ebooks and Ebook Readers seemed to be a hot topic this weekend, with such luminaries as Sergey Brin and Steve Ballmer weighing in on the subject and Amazon finding that foreign affairs can be complex.
As for the Ebook industry as a whole, Forrester research sees it really taking off this holiday season and they are upping their expectations.
E Ink recently announced that its 2009 revenues to date were up 250%, and were...

The successor to the E71 is up for pre-order on Amazon for $469. The US version with 3G. It’s a really cool looking phone, and it certainly looks like it succeeds the E71. Unlike the E71, however, the E72 is available only in one color, “Zodium Black” (where do they come up with these names?).

I posted in July about Kindle books going up in smoke. I just found out at Engadget that Amazon has apologized for deleting copies of 1984 from Kindles (even though they were illegal) and offered to give customers a free copy of 1984 (with their annotations intact) or a $30 gift certificate.
I think this is a great move by Amazon, even though they really didn’t need to do it. However, it still goes to show...
