If you lose that iPhone you are on your own!

Posted by Keisha Barwise on Sep 29, 2009 | 14 Comments

We’ve all read our fair share of stolen iPhone fiasco’s, this weekend i came across case that really struck a cord with me. I came across a forum post where the user had “found” an iPhone and was proceeding to set it up as his own. It really irked me that despite how easy it would be to put in anti theft measures, especially with a device like the iPhone, North American providers and Apple have...

Why Text Messages are limited to 160 Characters

Posted by CodeBubba on May 05, 2009 | 6 Comments

I always wondered this myself.  I had certain ideas like maybe 160 out of 255 characters in an Ethernet Packet or some other method of squeezing the data in.  Turns out that my thoughts on that were not all that far-fetched… Looking for a data pipeline that would fit these micro messages, Hillebrand came up with the idea to harness a secondary radio channel that already existed on mobile networks. This smaller data...

Zer01 Sets off to be a little different…

Posted by Chris Leckness on Mar 13, 2009 | 2 Comments

This is a carrier than sells HTC devices, offers unlimited data, unlimited calling, and no contracts. Sounds a little too good to be true doesn’t it? Well, time will tell. This company is what the mobility world calls a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) and that means they will basically use the AT&T network and operate as a reseller. It’s a little more in depth than that, but you get the picture. ...

Palm Treo 800w Review

Posted by Bryan Eley on Sep 05, 2008 | 14 Comments

I’ve got a little confession to make: I’m one of the unwashed masses who has never handled a Treo device before. I was tempted last year by the Treo 700wx when I was looking for a suitable upgrade path for my Motorola V3m, but decided in favor of the Samsung SCH-i760, the only Pocket PC phone with Windows Mobile 6 available from Verizon at the time. In any case, permit this neo-Treo user to share his thoughts on the...

California Judge Says Early Termination Fees Illegal

Posted by Radimus on Jul 30, 2008 | Leave a Comment

This is only for one State and the appeal in inevitable, but Early Termination Fees are a blight to consumer advocacy. They say it is to subsidize handset prices, while others say it is to lock consumers into a provider regardless of satisfaction and price gouging. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The fees that cell phone carriers charge customers who break service contracts took a big hit in a California courtroom when a judge...

MetroPCS CDMA Phone Party – BYOP

Posted by Chris Leckness on Jun 29, 2008 | 6 Comments

MetroPCS is having a party and they want you to BYOP(Bring you own phone). Of course, they have phones they will sell you too, but they welcome you to bring your own phone if you like (and you will want to if you want something hot, their offerings are slim). This is a CDMA carrier, so it’s not as simple as bringing your own phone, slapping their Sim card in it and moving right along. You have to call or go online...

Fuel Cell Phones?

Posted by chevybythesea on Jan 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

As reported at Engadget.com, and Gizmodo.com, NEC is developing a phone that will utilize a liquid fuel cell.  Since the case of this decidedly feminine phone is transparent, not only does it show the color of the fuel, it also informs the user how much power is left.  The phone will feature a touchscreen display, and a unique look.  No ideas on how to get this past airport security (unless the...

Stephen Fry and the case of the Glofish…

Posted by PsionAndy on Jan 05, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Stephen Fry is a writer, actor, and all round clever chap. He’s also one of those people who’s opinion i’m interested in on just about any subject. That’s not to say that I agree with him on everything, but I know that his opinion is likely to be entertaining, informed and likely to get the brain working.   His latest string to the multi-stranded crossbow is a column in the Guardian newspaper, ...

Cellphone Spending Surpasses Land Lines

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 23, 2007 | Leave a Comment

This actually surprises me that we haven’t already hit this point. There are so many cell phone users all over that I would have thought that many people have already turned off their land lines. I don’t know about now, but you used to have to have a land line with actual phone service to get high speed Internet with many of the phone companies. With Americans cutting the cord to their land lines, 2007 is...

How much do you pay?

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 18, 2007 | 1 Comment

I forgot to pay my AT&T Bill for a couple weeks and actually got billed for the next month already. I went to pay and the amount startled me a bit. For 2 months, my bill was like $450. That got me thinking, how much does the average household spend on cell phone a month? My cell bills have been cut in half in the last 6 months. I used to pay about $40/mo to Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint on top of my $200/mo AT&T...

Google Phone Announced

Instead of one manufacturer for the much rumored phone, Google will provide an open software platform in which many manufacturers can participate, including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung.  The phones are due out in the second half of 2008 on Sprint and T-Mobile in the US.  After that it will be available in Europe and Asia.  Google acquired a company called Android Inc. about three years ago, and used...

In the words of the bard Tom Petty; You’re jammin’ me, You’re jammin’ meQuit jammin’ me SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 2 – One afternoon in early September, an architect boarded his commuter train and became a cellphone vigilante. He sat down next to a 20-something woman who he said was “blabbing away” into her phone. “She was using the word ‘like’ all the time....

10 Reasons To Hate Cellphone Carriers . Huh?

Posted by Chris Leckness on Oct 31, 2007 | 5 Comments

Rob Beschizza over at Wired.com wrote a nice piece on how we hate the Cell Carriers… here is the list w/o comments, you’ll have to click over to the article for the dialog supporting each bullet item. I have taken exception to a couple and quote those. I would take some of his rants with a grain of salt guys. They stifle progress They’re a cartel They’re going to make you pay for Tetris They...

What NOT to do with your cell phones

Posted by Radimus on Oct 09, 2007 | Leave a Comment

I’m sure that many of us have an old drawer of old cell phones and occasionally a child might find one or be given one as a toy. You might want to choose something else to allow the kids to play with. Parents might want to think twice before giving their old cell phones to their children to play with because although an old cell phone may not have a service plan, the phone can still dial 911.The wireless 911 call...

No Cell Phone Use in Flights

Posted by Doug Smith on Oct 08, 2007 | Leave a Comment

This is not unexpected, and I’m not sure that I don’t disagree with it. The US FAA has shelved any discussion on in flight mobile use for the “Foreseeable Future”. Stating that there was an outcry against mobile phone use meaning there were a lot of people with sense to know that we would be forced to listed to Mr. or Mrs. “I can’t hear so I will talk even louder to compensate”...

Vodafone, the huge multinational mobile phone network surprised a lot of people by becoming a principal member of the WiMAX Forum. “Our membership of the WiMAX Forum will complement our existing memberships of other key industry bodies such as the GSMA, 3GPP and the Next Generation Mobile Network initiative,” said Steve Pusey, Global Chief Technology Officer, Vodafone. “Vodafone remains technology neutral...
