Since the days of the Axim many hoped that Dell would get back in the fray. Hears hoping they offer the value that they had with the Axims. Any way here is what Engadget had to say.

Turns out Mini 3i is only the beginning. Dell has announced plans to create a new Communications Group with a focus on mobile phones and similar portable devices. Current consumer division head and former Motorola exec Ron Garriques will take the helm. Not much else to say at this point, but make no mistake, Dell is now officially in the phone business for the long haul.

Our illustrious leader Chris Leckness will probably throw a party.

As a long time fan, cheerleader, and supporter of Dell, I am very pleased to announce that I have personally confirmed that Dell is coming to market with the Dell Mini 3. I am not claiming to have broken this announcement as I 1st saw a Google alert to a Cnet story, but as many times as we’ve had false alarms on upcoming Dell products, I had to hear it from the horses mouth. I just got off the phone with my long time contact at Dell and she confirmed this. I am beside myself in excitement this morning.

When this hit the FCC earlier this month, I was happy, but official announcement is good to have.

Look what we have here boy and girls. Dell’s Android powered phone that was launched in China earlier this year looks to be making it’s way home finally. Those that have analyzed the FCC filing seem to think that AT&T might be the landing pad for this phone. As someone that uses AT&T, I sure hope so! I wouldn’t be surprised if Dell skipped the carrier relationships and sold it unlocked though. If you haven’t read anything on theDell Mini 3iX, check out our coverage so far.

Anyone like the naming? They should have called it the Dell Axim x7 in my opinion. The brand name is already there and Dell promised the X3 and X7 around the X5 days. They came with the X3, but never the X7. Give me one now Dell!

Two thumbs up here… 1 thumb for Dell doing something I like again. (boy I miss the Aximsite days) The other thumb up is for it being a hot looking device. Thanks for the eye candy Chippy. It’s got a multi touch interface, a weak sounding battery, runs Android 2, and is about the perfect size for a MID. This could be my couch communicator for sure!

Don’t let the title fool you, I am not saying this isn’t going to happen, but I do know that in this site’s history (dating all the way back to Aximsite days), rumors about Dell phones have run their course. I am almost desensitized to it all. This current rumor has me with my ears perked up though. We do know that Dell has released the Mini 3i in China already. It is an Android device and doesn’t look too bad.

Now there are new rumors that this phone might hit the US on AT&T’s network according to Tom Krazit in a Cnet news article…

Dell and AT&T plan to launch a smartphone running Google’s Android next year, according to a report, as Dell’s years-long flirtation with the mobile industry appears ready for the next step.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Dell’s smartphone will run Android, which would be another design win to emerge this year for Google’s mobile operating system. AT&T’s involvement would also mark the fourth major U.S. carrier with plans to support Android, and is particularly interesting given AT&T’s status as the exclusive carrier of Apple’s iPhone.

Well well… color me surprised if this does indeed happen. I would be very happy to see it, but I have learned to take a “wait and see” attitude with Dell in the last couple years. It does make sense for AT&T to get into the Android game now.

This comes just two weeks after China Mobile revealed a deal with Dell to create the Dell mini3i, a smartphone that appears to be custom made for and exclusive to the Chinese Market.

Now, CIO Magazine is reporting that a third big Chinese Carrier, China Telecom, is in negotiations with Palm to offer the Pre in China, as well as with RIM to offer BlackBerrys.

So let me get this straight…

China Unicom/Apple

      vs

Bring it on.

Good lord but I love Asia. Somebody get me some popcorn, this is going to be MESSY.

Finally. After 1,999 different rumors over the last 5 years, Dell has finally launched a phone. It was on display in China for the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones.

The 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel device with capacitive touchscreen was on display in China running the Android-based Open Mobile System (OMS). The Mini 3i was on-hand as part of the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG, and apparently, Dell. The candybar device lacks WiFi (or Chinese WAPI) and is strictly 2G GSM (no 3G) but does come with a 3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and 950mAh battery.

This is part of a launch in China, so really not much use for us in the US, but it brings hope (for me at least) that Dell might bring something to the US someday. To be honest, I was skeptical. All the rumors over the years that turned up dry had me convinced that Dell would never launch a phone, or Tablet PC.

Yes, there are few pictures posted in Engadget that shows the new Smartphone from Dell. And it will be using Android, so Dell said bye bye to Windows Mobile and joined Google’s club.

Not exactly sure why all the spy shots have to be of MS Paint quality. With the advancements in cameras on cellphones these days, it’s a shame that all the spy shots seem to be blurry cam specials. Nonetheless, another round of rumored “Dell Phone” photos have emerged. The rumored name is going to be the Dell Mini 3i. Sort of sounds like the Dell Axim X3i huh? Well, I was hoping Dell would name their phone, when and if it would ever become a reality, the Dell Axim X7. This was the model name that was rumored to be coming with phone-like radio back when the Dell Axim X5 was released. The mentioned the Dell Axim X3 and it did come, but the 7 never did. Enough Axim history, lets look at the blurry cam shots…

According to Wired.com, Dell and Intel are preparing a Tablet PC that should be released “by the end of the first quarter of 2010”.

Dell and Intel are just the latest examples of a growing trend. MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen said he, too, has heard rumors about not just Dell, but also handset makers Nokia and HTC delivering tablets by end of first quarter 2010.

Wired.com also points that this and the rumor about Apple’s Tablet PC may be a sign of 2010 being a good year for the Tablet PC Technology. Well, I would be extremely happy to see that. It’s not secret that I love TabletPCs. Is not it? I also should add that the release of Windows 7 is a very important factor that could contribute to make 2010 the year of the Tablet PCs.

The IDC just released PC sales figures for Q2/09 and it is clear the poor economy was having a big effect on sales. Overall sales were down both in the US and globally with Dell being the big loser, dropping a fifth of their 2008 share in 2009. That translates to losing about 5 percent in real market share in the US and 2.5 percent globally. Acer increased by about the same shares that Dell lost and is growing fast in the US, increasing their market share by 50 percent of what it was in 2008.

Apple dropped to fifth in the US in terms of PC sales. The company had been third in 2008 but was overtaken by both Acer and Toshiba in the US. Apple is not in the top five globally. Most analysts are attributing Apple’s drop to the economy, noting the high prices of Macs as well as the public perception of Macs as “luxury items”. On top of that, lower priced MacBooks were introduced too late to affect these figures, debuting in June.

I would be interested in seeing figures on how many (if any) of the PCs included in these results were netbooks. If netbooks WERE included in the figures then the success of the Acer Aspire One and the relative failure of Dell’s netbook line, not to mention to total lack of a netbook product from Apple, may have been a major contributor to the rise and fall of these companies last quarter.

Politics are usually something I try to avoid on the internet. Lord knows we all have enough reasons for sleepless nights and high blood pressure (parenting for instance) without adding the endless partisan demonizing that goes on over the internet due to politics.

However, there are some things that go beyond politics and enter the realm of ethics and basic human rights. As I am sure all of you know, the current government of China decided that the agreement by such former champions of free speech as Google and Yahoo to censor information going into China and to turn over the details of those bloggers who the government branded as seditious was not enough. Information was still getting through, and coming out, through a thousand little blogs and independent web sites, to say nothing of twitter and other social networking sites.

Therefore, the Chinese government decreed that any PC sold in China must have their Green Dam censorship software built in to block any content that the Chinese government felt their citizens should not see. Of course they explain that this is to block pornography, which some people see as a reasonable thing to do. Personally, to me that is an inexcusable example of censorship and big-brother paternalism, but no matter. Once that software is provided with any PC sold in China you are already halfway down the slippery slope. Once the hubbub dies down, the Chinese Government will be able to use the same software to block any information they feel is too disgusting for people to see, such as free and open debate of their government’s policies.

Thankfully a good number of people saw things as I do and there was far more of an outcry then the Chinese Government had been expecting (did they learn NOTHING from the Olympics?) and they opted to postpone enforcing the requirement.

End of the matter, hurrah for democracy?

Not yet.

For one thing, the Chinese Government has stated they will still quietly go ahead with the plan, but they will just wait until the eye of the world is drawn to the next sensation. Beyond they, they don’t even need to enforce it. It seems that most PC makers, fully aware of the vast profits to be made by appeasing the Chinese bureaucrats, are shipping PCs with the Green Dam software ANYWAY.

The AP is reporting the following…

Taiwan’s Acer Inc. — the world’s No. 3 PC maker — Sony Corp. and China’s Haier Group said they were shipping Green Dam on disks with computers for sale in China. China’s Lenovo Group, the No. 4 producer, said it would offer the software pre-installed or on disk. Taiwan’s Asus Inc. said it was preparing to supply Green Dam disks with PCs. Taiwanese laptop maker BenQ Inc. said the system was on the hard drives of its computers.

Acer was supplying Green Dam because disks were already packed with PCs before the government postponed the plan, that had been due to take effect Wednesday, said a company spokeswoman, Meng Lei. Lenovo said it also was going ahead with plans made before the Green Dam order was postponed.

Hewlett-Packard Co., the world’s top PC manufacturer, said it was working with the U.S. government to get more information and declined to comment further. No. 2 Dell Inc. said it was not including Green Dam with its PCs.

Well, if China can use economic clout to make PC makers willing and eager accessories to censorship and the denial of free speech, then we can at least use the same tools to make our own voices heard.

Choose not to purchase technology by Acer, Sony, Haier, Lenovo, Asus or BenQ. BOYCOTT THEM until they change their policy, or at least until China gives them no choice but to comply. Obeying an unjust law to make censorship easier is bad enough, but to do so when that law is not even being enforced is far worse. Support HP and Dell for their willingness to at least put the breaks on this infantilization and infringement of the basic human rights of adult Chinese citizens and think things through. Before you buy a PC or other device try to find out where their manufacturer stands on this issue. Samsung? LG? Apple? What are YOU going to do?

I for one put my money where my mouth (and heart) is just this morning. I was a hair away from purchasing a Lenovo or Acer netbook when I opted for a Compaq (HP) model instead. A drop in the bucket? Of course…but I will NOT let my money be used to bolster the bottom line of companies that give into Chinese pressure and threats concerning human rights. I simply can’t do so in good conscience, even if it has no effect at all.

I urge you to do the same.

In a bold move, Dan Frakes over at MacWorld has decided to see what all the fuss is about, and bought himself a Netbook (A Dell Vostro A90 to be exact, one of the most hackinsoshable of the current Netbook crop) in order to see what running Mac OS X on a device that small would be like. For Frakes, it was clearly and somewhat predictably a mixed bag.

Regarding software he had this to say…

I’m able to use most of my favorite Mac programs on the HackBook, although some apps, such as GarageBand, won’t launch because the laptop’s screen is too small (not that you’d ever want to run GarageBand on the A90). I didn’t test Microsoft Office; in fact, I didn’t even install it, knowing how much memory Office apps use. Apple’s iWork, on the other hand, works just fine. In other words, when I use the HackBook as a netbook—for Web browsing, e-mail, word processing, and other basic tasks—it works well. I’ve been especially impressed by the performance of Safari 4.

He was less pleased with the hardware side of things however, and came to the following conclusion, along with some insights into Apple’s strategy…

On the other hand, a tiny laptop like this isn’t for everyone. In fact, for many people, a netbook—even one running Mac OS X—is an exercise in frustration. It’s just not what most people expect from a "laptop." (This is why I don’t see Apple ever making a netbook in the current sense of the word. Indeed, Apple continues to denigrate the idea of a small, low-cost Mac laptop, specifically citing small screens, cramped keyboards, and poor performance. We’re more likely to see a device closer to an oversized iPod touch.)

I have run Mac OS X on my Gigabyte M912M with some success (though now I restrict it to Vista and XP Dual boot) and I am actively considering buying a second Netbook, maybe an HP 2140, just for hackintoshing. However, it would be as much a mistake for someone to expect a hackinstoshed Netbook to give them the full Apple experience as it would be for them to expect a Netbook running XP to give them the full Windows experience.

Netbooks do what they do extremely well, as Frakes said, light office work, email, net browsing, chatting. If you prefer that sort of machine to run OS X, then have at it, but don’t expect it to become a miniature MacBook…it won’t. You shouldn’t expect at Netbook to replace your main PC full time, no matter what OS you are running on it. Choose the right tool for the task.

What do you think, is Dell finally going to hit the smartphone market? It’s not too late, but they could have been in it so long ago. Oh well. I think this could be legit since the last couple Dell Smartphone rumors said Android. If it is legit, it’s about time.

Judging by the shadows, It doesn’t look thick enough to have a built in keyboard and there doesn’t seem to be any buttons on the front facing portion either. They could be flush and the blurry shot not show them, but I don’t see it. Anyhow, what do you think? Real or Fake? If it’s real, what about Android on a Dell? I am just happy to see Dell get in the mix personally.
