Top 100 Free Phone Applications

This is all phones too, not just WinMo or the iPhone.Sascha Segan from PC Mag has published a pretty extensive list of free apps that have been hand chosen by some of the PC Mag staff. It’s pretty good list for iPhone and Windows Mobile in my opinion, but I can’t personally vouch for the other lists.

You are probably wondering what’s up with the numbers of apps for each platform right? Sascha explained that they chose the size of the list based on data from their website on which platforms had the most eyes looking at PC Mag. I provided a list to let you skip to what interest you the most since the article is in the “big site” style that I dislike so much. (you know, the 300 different page views per article)

Need to call someone special on Thanksgiving?

This is a great opportunity to call your friends and relatives on Thanksgiving if you do’nt have nationwide dialing. Truphone just announced that for 12 hours on Thanksgiving 2009 all calls made on Truphone to mobile and landline phones in the United States will be free so that friends and family can call each other to catch up this holiday season.

From noon to midnight UTC, or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST, on Thursday, Nov. 26, all calls made to U.S. landlines and mobiles using the Truphone application will be free from anywhere in the world. More information is available here: www.truphone.com/thanksgiving.

Do you need a tool that will translate over 20 languages on your device? FreeTranslator may be the software that you need. Although I have not tried yet, this might be worth looking at if you want the ability to translate text while using your device.

This translator is similar to Babylon Translator and translates various languages like Italian, English, French, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, German, Spanish, Russian, Greek, Korean, Japanese, Polish, Dutch, Arabian, Afrikaans, Bulgarian, Czech, Indonesian, Welsh, SerboCroat, Ainu and much more!

Twitter by Voice … use TweetCall

I like Twitter and what I like even more are the very cool applications that have come out to make “twittering” even easier. Applications like TweetDeck for your PC and Pocketwit for you devices make it a great experience. But there is another one out there that is very cool just in case your fingers are getting tired typing that 140 character maximum. It’s called TweetCall and it allows you to Twitter by Voice.

It works reasonably well but there is often an error if I speak just a little too fast (I don’t think it quite gets a Boston accent). That said, it is worth checking out and of course, it is FREE!

Change your Font and Personalize your device

Here is a neat little program that you might like to personalize your device. If you want to have a more stylish or bigger font then this very tiny and useful software utility can help to change your default font on your Windows Mobile devices.

Users can download the .cab file and transfer it through active sync to the mobile device. Just launch the application and it will bring users to a simple GUI for quick setup. Basically there are four font settings that can be configured independently, namely Font System, Font Menu, Font PopUp and Font OOM. And for each font setting, user can choose from a drop down list of nine different fonts such as Courier New, MS Sans Serif, Tahoma, Abscissa and etc. In case you think the font size is too tiny, there is an option to adjust its dimension up to 1600 (by default it is 800). However, users may need to verify the actual effect after soft reset so that it won’t appear to be too huge in your tiny mobile screen.

The software utility is downloadable at MobileHTC free of charge and is compatible with Windows Mobile version 5, 6 and 6.1.

Who’s calling?

Here is an interesting FREE service available if you are getting calls with blocked IDs.

TrapCall gives you caller ID information from blocked calls. If you reject or miss a call, your phone forwards those calls to TrapCall’s toll free number then they “magically get the information” and send the call back to you but when you get it, the caller ID unblocked. If you reject the call a second time, it’ll go straight to your normal voicemail. On the caller’s end, all they hear during this whole process is ringing.

There are three tiers of service: a free and two pay services offering a variety of features.If you are frustrated with telemarketers and calls from folks you don’t wan to hear from, then is could be a program worth consideration.

So you may have asked if you read my previous post, is there a quick way to enable/disable bluetooth as well? And of course the answer is yes. Like the WiFi, you can have it on the Start Menu but for me that is not as much as a priority. If I am using bluetooth, it will be on for a while but when I want it off, I want to access it quickly.

It does save me one “click” by having it in Programs. But remember, once you launch it, pressing Start with show the recently used icons at the top. It often is still there thus saving me additional clicks. It is worth having …..

Raiisak`s WLAN Button

I am enjoying my Touch Pro and each day I find more and more about what I can and cannot do with it. One thing I have found is that WiFi works really well … it has been simple and seamless but there is a major drawback and that is how fast it sucks power from the battery.

So to preserve battery power, when I am done with WiFi, I like to turn it off and if I need it later, I just re-enable it. So that sounds simple and it is but I have to go through several steps to turn it off and then repeat those steps to turn it back on later. I just wanted to be able to turn it on with a quick click … period!

Ahh, but there is a solution and it is very cool and works extremely well. It is a really neat utility that will place a shortcut to the Start Menu for enabling/disabling your WiFi quickly.

Description:

Makes a new shortcut under programs, WLAN activates WLAN On and OFF, see image under.

Make a short cut to start menu by: Start->Settings->Menus and scroll down for WLAN button.

This is a program that is definitely worth adding to your arsenal of utilities and you can get it here at xda-developers. Enjoy!

Pocket PC Piano

Here is a FREE Piano application for Pocket PC that was designed for the Omnia but later fixed to work in other devices as well. It is actually pretty cool for knocking out a simple tune but remember, Windows Mobile has no multi-touch and so just one key at a time folks!
