First Impressions: Zune HD Games

I admit it, as soon as they were available I raced to the Zune Marketplace and downloaded three of the new Zune HD games, very eager to see what Microsoft had chosen as the first proper showcase of the Zune HD’s Tegra powered game chops. So much time has been spent discussing the lack of Zune HD apps, I was thrilled to finally see if they would be worth all the sturm und drang about them.

I downloaded three to begin with…Project Gotham Racing, Lucky Lanes Bowling and Audiosurf Tilt. To be honest I really had no idea what to expect from these games and tried to keep preconceptions down to an absolute minimum. In the end, I was impressed overall, but as befitting a first, somewhat limited effort there were some problems…however far fewer then many people would have expected. If this was some kind of test for the Zune HD and Team Zune, they all certainly passed.

If you updated your Zune HD to v4.3 over the weekend, then head over to the Marketplace ASAP as Team Zune have a new crop of games for your downloading pleasure, and they are all FREE.

All look very slick and I am downloading even as we speak. Hopefully I should have a first impression or two posted in the next couple hours.

Major Update to Best Selling Windows Mobile Game of the Year

Today, SPB Software, a leading mobile software developer, announced that the Windows Mobile Professional (touchscreen) version of its famous developmental game SPB Brain Evolution has received a major update and now reached version 2.0.

SPB Brain Evolution has been available since January 2007 and has achieved the world’s best selling game status (year 2008). The game allows hundreds of thousands of users worldwide to improve their mental awareness and maintain their newly achieved brain fitness.

This new update of the game includes twelve exercises and can track the progress in your personal brain evolution. These exercises are Sudoku, Numbers, Arithmetics, Quadronica, Guess Who, Memorica, Encyclopedia, Minesweeper, Matches, Balltracker, Geometry and Pairs, the latter two being completely new. They help users to exercise such basic mind activities as logic, arithmetic and memory.

So how does it stack up against the previous version? Well, as a user that has enjoyed this game for a few years now (originally installed on my Dell Axim), I put it to the test on my smartphone. Read on to see what changes have been implemented, and my thoughts about the game as a whole.

WebOS Getting it’s Game Face on?

Fast Company is reporting on signs that Palm is continuing to try to position their webOS to go head on against Apple’s iPhone and are willing to ante up to get dealt in. Since games are the biggest sellers in the AppStore (unless you count fart apps) and the gaming community is squarely in Apple’s sites, it is little wonder that Palm is looking to improve the gaming profile of their OS.

Kim Eaton at Fast Company says…

A job listing has popped up indicating that Palm is looking for a "Game Frameworks Engineer," requiring a familiarity with 3-D hardware acceleration and pixel shading. It’s basically an indication that Palm plans to expand the graphical code that underpins WebOS. Some future version of the firmware will be capable of serious graphical feats–enough to get some good 3-D gaming action on the Pre.

I am very happy that Palm is continuing to look long term for the webOS. While the Pre may not have been as big a jackpot as they hoped, it definitely put them back in the game. A lot is resting on the choices they make now in developing the OS and creating the next wave of webOS devices. Improving the graphics capabilities and gaming stature is a good choice on their part, as long as they don’t move too far away from Palm’s natural affinity for productivity apps.

This makes me very happy since I have become an avid Q9m user. Getting my favorite games that I have enjoyed so much on my Pocket PCs for so long is great news.

After more waiting, more work, and more fighting with Ninjas, pdamill has finally released 5 more of their fantastic titles for Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphones and Windows Mobile 6 Standard devices!
