The folks at ALK Technologies never stop, I’m beginning to doubt if they even sleep to be honest. They just had their second update to CoPilot approved and is available now in the App Store. This new update brings with it some big new features and one that is not so big but was on my personal wish list when I was working on my review.

First up we have the stock iPhone keyboard. This has been the #1 requested feature for users and was one of the things I mentioned in the review because for me, the iPhone keyboard is the best soft keyboard I have ever used and when combined with the autocorrect feature of iPhone OS, it has even bested my previous device, the AT&T Tilt.

Next, and this is a big one…….Text to Speech voice directions! Instead of “Turn left just ahead” you will hear “Turn left on Spring Street”. Current users will need to read on past the break to read how to enable TTS on your iPhone app however this does not apply to new users as of this writing.

We also get more map updates and along with that a new button that will check for MapSure updates. These are monthly maintenance updates and quarterly full map upgrades. These are, and always will be, free for CoPilot Live 8 users. Users can expect to receive these updates as noted for the life of the app and for 6 months afterwards. For example, if CoPilot Live 9 is released as a new app in January 2010, CoPilot Live 8 will get updates through the end of June 2010.

There are also some other various fixes such as improved GPS performance, improved walking mode, and better address book integration.

Also, I’d like to send out a congrats to the folks over at ALK for making the What’s Hot section of the App Store! It seems to me like they are a hard working group of people and really deserve the recognition!

Over the weekend TomTom went live in the App Store down under leading many to speculate a pending US release. Well those people were right as the much anticipated TomTom iPhone app is now live in the App Store and like many of us feared, it is not cheap. The price of just the US app is $99.99! My guess is that they did that as to not cannibalize the sales of their standalone GPS units. TomTom is a big player in the GPS market and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Garmin try to get in on this too since we have TomTom and Navigon selling iPhone apps next to their standalone units.

In other GPS news, there is still no price on the TomTom car kit however it was confirmed that the app would work with the iPod Touch when paired with the car kit despite the app being listed as iPhone only in the App Store listing. TomTom also confirmed that the dock would work with other 3rd party programs. We’ll have to see how this will work. Hopefully it will be a seamless experience that doesn’t require any coding on the part of Navigon, Sygic, and other 3rd party devs.

There are an immense number of phone choices out there to fit the needs and desires of virtually everyone. For me, my choice has always been a Windows Mobile device because I have always found the OS to be the best for my needs. I have been pretty adamant about that choice and rarely have a desire to wander away that is until I had the opportunity to check out several Nokia devices over the past several years.

I have used a half dozen or so of the N-series devices and frankly have liked each one. The quality has always been outstanding and the functionality of each device has more than met any expectation that I have had for a device. A couple of weeks ago I was asked if I would like to try out the Nokia E75 and with all the positive experiences I have had with the N-series, I thought this would be an excellent opportunity to check out an E-series device … and boy am I glad I did!

Nokia has a slew of devices that can meet the needs of virtually everyone. The E75 is a device designed for the Business user with a variety of very cool features. The following two videos were taken while on the road on a visit to Amish Country in Pennsylvania. The review box arrived as I was pulling out the driveway so I had to wait until I got to Pennsylvania to check it out for the first time.

Part 1 gives you the same experience I got as I opened the box for the first time.

Forgive the shakiness in this second video as I tried to show some of the features. I was not planning on doing a video when I packed before the trip and unfortunately I did not pack a tripod.

An interesting aspect about this device is that it has two distinct modes: one for work and the other for personal use; a neat feature for folks that want to distinguish between the two. Navigation, Communication, Applications and email all coupled with Photography, Internet, Music and Video make this device a terrific addition to the Nokia line.

My Impressions of the Nokia E75 will come tomorrow.

Straight from AT&T:

AT&T Inc. and Xora Inc. announced a GPS Locator application that will provide small and medium-sized businesses with real-time visibility into the location of their mobile workforce.

The application is compatible with most AT&T mobile devices, and will be a huge benefit to businesses looking to manage their mobile workforce. This service will be available at the end of July ‘09.

Utilizing Xora’s Web-based maps (combined with Google Maps) and requiring nothing additional to be installed on the phones, AT&T has provided a real-time solution to indicate where and when vehicles are stopped, and for how long, making it easy to identify time spent at job sites, or on breaks. Upon simply powering on their mobile devices, office staff can easily see their location. The application is ideal for small to medium-sized businesses in industries such as construction, field services, transportation and distribution as well as state and local government. These organizations are looking for an easy-to-deploy, comprehensive solution that can quickly provide enhanced visibility, accountability and compliance for field operations, with no large IT staff or on-site hardware to deploy.

Xora GPS Locator will be available from AT&T at a monthly subscription of $21.99 per device. An appropriate AT&T voice and/or data plan, and activation fee are required.

With the new OS 3.0 release Apple added a new feature, Find my iPhone (or iPod Touch) which accesses Core Location to find out exactly where your iDevice is. Unfortunately, it requires a MobileMe subscription to be able to use it. After finding this on TUAW I was reminded why I was able to justify the $60 I paid for MobileMe.

LiveJournal user Kevin Miller was in Chicago for a LEGO convention and after the long day Kevin and his friends went to an admittedly shady bar and Kevin left the iPhone inside at their table. I don’t want to ruin the whole story for you so you should head over to the page and read through it as I felt it was an interesting story. Just one big disclaimer though: If you ever do this, BE CAREFUL! You don’t know if the person with your iPhone is carrying a knife and/or a gun. While I’m happy to hear that he got his iPhone back and managed to do it safely, things could have been a whole lot worse. I can just imagine now that somebody will try to do this with their lost iPhone and they’ll end up running into somebody slightly more dangerous and while they might get the phone back, they might not be walking away from the encounter.

Find My iPhone works, and it is awesome

So if you want the update then you need to head over to PhoneNews since they have the only link to the update.

… I think the Redfly is a much better concept. I saw over at pocket-lint a piece about i-mate working on an accessory for a new smartphone that would fit into a laptop type of device and double as the trackpad. Called the Warrior, it would allow users to connect to their PC in the office or home with a virtualisation software. It sounds cool and I like the ability to insert your device but I think the RedFly is a better solution.

That said, cost is always an issue. Indications from the pocket-lint article suggest that i-mate hopes the device will cost only $200 when it launches at the end of the summer. It is still pretty top secret but they did get pictures of the phone that will be used and give an artists’ impression of what it may end up looking like. Facts known are that the handset, called under the code name Legionnaire, will be Windows mobile 6.5, come with Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity as well as GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 and microSD card slot. A 800MHz chip is expected and it will feature a 4:3 aspect 10-inch screen and an SD card reader.

We will just have to wait to see if it comes to fruition and if it does and at that price, you just may want one. Hit the links above to check out additional pictures.

Check this out if you are a user of mini-notes, notebooks and other ultra mobile devices. VIA just launched a new website today called “How To Be Mobile” which is primarily aimed at mainstream users of mini-notes, notebooks and other ultra mobile devices. VIA wants to take tips and user information for ultra mobile products and pass it on to the everyday “regular” user like fishermen, chefs, travelers and sportsmen etc. This promises to be a good place to check out for the latest VIA news as well as some great tips.

website: www.howtobemobile.com

rss: http://www.howtobemobile.com/index.php?format=feed&type=rss

twitter:https://twitter.com/howtobemobile

So how can it help you, Joe Average User? Well here is just one (of many) example. Are you a fisherman? Here is a tip that they passed on with this piece about Hi-Tech Fishing: Part I

Finding where the fish are is undoubtedly the most important aspect to fishing. You can have the most expensive, state-of-the-art rods, reels, lures and bait, but if you’re in the wrong place you’re wasting your time.

Resourceful anglers have been using GPS and electronic charting for years to scout, pattern and mark fishing trails with greater accuracy, which in turn leads to a more successful day out on the water.

Using a shareware version of OziExplorer GPS Mapping Software together with a GPS receiver (you can pick up a leading-brand Bluetooth unit for around US$50) OziExplorer allows you to work with maps that you’ve either purchased or scanned. Your GPS position is plotted on the map providing real time tracking ability (moving map) and makes it easy to track waypoints, routes, and “hot” spots, all of which can be edited and saved to your hard disk for future use.

If you liked Part 1, then you want to check out Hi-Tech Fishing: Part II where they go even further, turning your notebook into a dual GPS/fishfinder.

So fishing is not your thing? Then check out this Mobile WiFi Hotspot. Called MiFi, it is a portable wireless router that will deliver to EVDO or HSPA high speed data network access to multiple users in a small area. Much the same size as a credit card, the sleek looking MiFi can be shared not only between up to five users, but between devices such as laptops, cameras, gaming devices and multimedia players.

Garmin-Asus and ASUSTeK Computer announced the Garmin-Asus nüvifone M20, an all-in-one phone, mobile web browser and premium navigation system with a Windows Mobile operating system.

This is the first Garmin-Asus nüvifone and they are certainly starting out right because this device is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The M20 is a dual-band 3.5G/tri-band GSM phone that has Wi-Fi connectivity, a desktop-like Internet browser, push email, document viewing, multi-media capability, Bluetooth and Garmin sat nav.

The M20 has a 2.8” TFT touch lens display, built-in microphone and speakers, built-in 4Gb/8Gb My Storage, and ActiveSync for Outlook, Microsoft Office, and multi-media synchronization. The 3 megapixel camera automatically geotags images with the exact latitude and longitudinal coordinates. Users can then save the image on their phone, email it to a friend, or navigate to where the image was taken.

You can read more about the M20 here at: www.GarminAsus.com.
