New Apple iPods–The Upside

Posted by Zealot on Sep 02, 2010 | 5 Comments

In Apple’s fall event for 2010 there was a great deal of iPod action…some of it was problematic, dealing with the silent, unacknowledged cleanup of past failures. However, Apple also took some very important strides forward in redefining and blurring several different product categories. For all the doubts and things left unsaid about the “back to the future” iPod Shuffle and the suddenly touchscreen iPod Nano,...

iPod 4G Coming Mid-August?

Posted by Zealot on Aug 08, 2010 | 3 Comments

A rumor is circulating that, if true, indicates that the recent Antennagate has REALLY discombobulated Apple’s internal schedule. I have never seen a company that kept to as disciplined and consistent a release schedule as Apple does, right down to the timing of leaks. According to the Cupertinean Calendar, September is iPod Announcement season, falling right after the iPhones have bloomed in June. However, the signs...

iPod Touch 4G Two Months Away, To Mirror iPhone 4?

Posted by Zealot on Jul 08, 2010 | 8 Comments

According to a top retailer in the UK, John Lewis, when Apple unveils the next generation iPod Touch in September it will come packed with new iOS 4 ready features fresh from the iPhone 4, including that camera we were all expecting LAST year. The information was leaked following John Lewis’ “Xmas in July” event for employees in central London the other day. Apparently the  information is based on “noises”...

Flash Content on iPads, iPhones and most likely all other Mobile Devices!!!

Posted by Diego Samuilov on Jun 01, 2010 | 2 Comments

Smokescreen, this is a great name for a tool that allows iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users run Flash content. On top of that it is a great name considering the developer behind it is actually called Chris Smoak. For their website you can click (here). Smokescreen is essentially a flash player completely coded in JavaScript. This means that Flash files (movies, files with extension SWF, etc) can be played in Safari on...

iClassic brings the click wheel love to iPhones everywhere

Posted by Adam Wyss on Dec 09, 2009 | 6 Comments

Yesterday we saw a new “retro” app released to the Cydia Store called iClassic.  (You really didn’t think Apple would approve this for the App Store did you?)  It brings the click wheel interface back to your iPhone or iPod Touch for those of you who miss your click wheel iPods but must have the latest thing out of Cupertino.  After a little bit of playing around, this is one novelty app I think...

Cnet’s Prize Fight – Zune HD vs. iPod Touch

Posted by Chris Leckness on Sep 30, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Ok, there were a couple errors in the prize fight, but that’s ok. There were some good points made supporting the Touch’s win. The biggest slip was saying that neither had an EQ. The Zune HD does have an EQ. The EQ is in the settings and has several preset EQ settings. Thanks to Marques Lyons from Inside the Circle for the heads up about some Apple Fan Boy’s comment about the results. Here is AppleFanbot’s...

Keep Out of Direct Sunlight

Posted by Zealot on Sep 29, 2009 | 7 Comments

In my Zune HD review, reader Paul Johnson asked how the Zune HD handled direct sunlight and I realized that that was a very good question, and in fact I simply didn’t know the answer, as I tend to avoid the sunlight like a slug avoids salt. What’s more, that question seems to have become a point of conflict between iPod Fanboiz and Neo Maxi Zune Dweebies around the web. How does each device cope in the brutal glare...

Can Zune beat out the iPod? Some say yes…

Posted by Chris Leckness on Sep 21, 2009 | 9 Comments

I am sort of a realist here and my opinion is that the Microsoft Zune offerings since the initial launch in 06 have been on par with Apple offerings over that time. The problem is that Apple was an innovator and blaze the digital media trail way before Microsoft got their feet in the pool. They have a huge head start and being that the iPod line is the Xerox of media players, they have a strong, SUPER STRONG foothold...

iPod Touch 3G Hardware Gives Hints of the Future

Posted by Zealot on Sep 12, 2009 | 2 Comments

AppleInsider is reporting on the inevitable teardowns of the new iPod Touch and is discovering some very interesting hints as to what we may see in version 4 of the devices. First and foremost they are saying that there is a 6mm x 6mm x 3mm empty space at the top center of the device which seems designed to take the same video camera as was installed in the new Nanos. The position is consistent with the rumors and the...

iPod Phone?

Posted by Zealot on Jul 21, 2009 | 6 Comments

Wired is reporting that they have strong rumors that the upcoming next gen iPod Touch, expected in September, will be sporting not only a camera, but a mic. A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone. If iPod Touches...

The Giant iPod Netbook Thingie Cometh?

Posted by Zealot on Jul 13, 2009 | 3 Comments

Last week I suggested that based on all the hints from Taiwan screen vendors and others, we could be seeing the long awaited Apple “Giant iPod Netbook Thingie” (I will be copywriting that term later tonight, so hands off Steve Jobs) in September. Well, the rumor now says October, and this one has long legs, being reported far and wide across the internet due to some Chinese language reports in the trade papers. The...

Smile, You’re on my iPod

Posted by Zealot on Jul 06, 2009 | 8 Comments

Last week I speculated about what Apple could have in store for the fall, when it’s competitors in the MP3 player market will all be raising their games. The apparent answer is all over the blogosphere as TechCrunch tips the fact that Apple is buying gajillions of the camera they used in the iPhone 3GS…so many in fact they can only be planning on embedding them in the forehead of every one of Apple’s media contacts…or...

Waiting for September

Posted by Zealot on Jul 01, 2009 | 11 Comments

September is already looking like a hot time in the gadget biz, with several major releases tipped to be happening in or around the beginning of autumn. This makes a lot of sense since most products hoping to make a splash in holiday shopping will want to be on shelves by October, which means a September release is very important. September is also the hot time for back to school/college buying, which always is a big...

iBook

Some very interesting statistics about iPhone /iPod Touch Apps from Ben Lorica at O’Reilly. While the fact that games and entertainment software are numbers one and two in terms of App Store Apps comes as no surprise, eBooks come in at a very respectable if slightly shocking fourth. Even more impressive is that over the last three months eBooks have been far and away the fastest growing category in the App Store,...

How Does InvisibleSHIELD Feel?

Posted by Chris Leckness on Jan 30, 2009 | 3 Comments

Like many of you, I got a new mobile toy for Christmas.  Any time I get new gear my first concern is how to protect it.  It’s really a simple formula for me; if I can’t readily replace it, then I better at least protect it! My Christmas gadget was the iPod Touch 2G.  I tend to be a 2 device kind of guy, so I have always liked to have a PDA on hand.  Choices in PDAs are pretty slim, so...

Not the App Store…AppBeacon!

Posted by Zealot on Jan 25, 2009 | 1 Comment

For all of the phenomenal sales success of Apple’s App Store, there have been consistent complaints about it’s usability or lack there of. In addition, some users have complained that it tends to be very heavily infused with Apple marketing and fails to support Linux. However, considering what a success the App Store has been (and that it has been the only game in town) these minor issues have been largely ignored…until...

iJewish – Software by Rusty Brick

Posted by Zealot on Jan 20, 2009 | 4 Comments

Even though I am someone who uses many different kinds of mobile technology every day in the workplace and for diverse forms of entertainment, I still often forget the ways that these devices can enhance other aspects of our daily lives. Take for example religious observance. I have been aware of bibles formatted for handheld devices as well as software actually designed just for reading scripture since I bought my first...

Some Say My Touch is Tru (Truphone that is)

Posted by Jack Cook on Dec 04, 2008 | 3 Comments

Andy Abramson from VoIP Watch had a very interesting piece today about Truphone having made the Apple iPod Touch into a WiFi phone. Yeah, that’s right and if you take a minute to read Andy’s article, I think you will agree that it is an exciting opportunity for folks that have the Apple iPod Touch on a lot of different fronts.  In part, Andy said: Yesterday Mike Butcher, TechCrunch UK broke the news...
