The iPhone has caught its first bug, while it is known as “ikee”, I’d like to call it R1A1 in honor of the H1N1 flu going around right now. Now you may be wondering, why did I choose R1A1? Let’s look at just the letters, RA. Those are the initials of a certain singer. First, before you freak out, this bug only affects jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches that have SSH installed. Second, the root account must still have the default password (alpine). What this worm does is change the wallpaper to a very stunning headshot of Rick Astley. Now the conditions to get this are very specific. You must meet all of the following to even risk catching this thing:

Own an iPhone

iPhone MUST be jailbroken (stock iPhones cannot catch this)

iPhone MUST have SSH installed (even if you are jailbroken, you can’t catch this if you do not have SSH)

Your iPhone MUST be in Australia

Now, that said, I meet the first three but I’m not in Australia so (for now) I’m immune being in the US. However that didn’t stop me from following Chris’s tutorial which is located right here. Following these simple steps behind the link will stop this from infecting you, even if you meet all 4 previously listed conditions, you cannot be infected. So all jailbreakers out there, please take the time to be safe and change your root password. One last thing, make sure you make a note of it somewhere. I don’t know about you but I don’t use the root account every day. Either take the time and write it down on a slip of paper and put it with your iPhone box, note it in your secret list of passwords, keep it somewhere safe because it cannot be easily recovered. The only way I can think of would be to restore your iPhone to stock and start fresh. Any jailbreaker knows that is a HUGE pain in the behind because Cydia apps don’t get backed up and restored as seamlessly as iTunes apps do.

So everybody who uses SSH, get the R1A1 vaccine and change your root password!

OK, I am not going to beat around the bush here. I am new to the iPhone world. While I have owned the original iPhone since the day it was released, I have only recently called an iPhone my daily driver. I now use my jailbroken iPhone 3GS every day unless I am reviewing another phone like I am now. I still carry that iPhone with me though. All that said, I have been in the smartphone game from the beginning.

In this article, I am going to discuss my views on what’s right and wrong in regards to altering your phone. I am going to use examples and my opinions are based on my own moral code and not necessarily what is truly right or wrong. To be honest, all modifications to a phone are wrong on some level. Every license agreement has some provisions within it that prohibits modification of the code. Despite those restrictions, we do it anyway and there are levels of wrong in all this.

For about 10 years, I have been pretty clean with “borrowing music or software”, but back in the late 90s, I might have partaken in some unsavory acts. I am not perfect by any means, but I do not feel downloading applications, games, music, movies, etc from a website or repository of illegal software is right. I know it’s out there, I know where to go, but I choose to buy the items I want or need now. Sure, stealing a song here and there might not cause someone to starve to death or incite riots in the streets, but if enough people steal their music, it will affect the industry negatively. Why do you think the RIAA is out there suing moms. Our younger generation is too desensitized to taking whatever they want off the internet. “But it’s there for the taking.” Right… so are those 50 pairs of shoes at the Shoe Carnival sidewalk sale while the worker goes inside to use the restroom. Anyway, I don’t do it and I don’t let my kids do it.

Now, the most recent questionable practice that I encountered often before I picked up the 3GS was ROMS for Windows Mobile Phones and PDAs. I took on a no thank you stance on this. I am not in the know so much on what happens in those circles, but what I think is that there are around 3 levels of ROM activity on some of these sites online.

Before we get to the good stuff I should warn you that hacking your iPhone WILL void your warranty and following these instructions could very well get you a higher than normal bill from AT&T or whoever your carrier is that does not support iPhone tethering officially. You could potentially screw up your phone and if you follow these steps, iPhone MVP and myself are NOT liable for anything you screw up.

This tutorial is for those of you who are NOT currently jailbroken. I have a separate tutorial for those already jailbroken right here. After you complete these steps, you will be jailbroken, unlocked, and have tethering enabled. This is everything you will ever need in your iPhone life! Everything you need is just past the break!

As was before, Blackra1n will NOT sim unlock the iPhone. It merely jailbreaks it. An unlock is, however, being worked on, not by geohot, but a member of the Dev Team. Just be patient.

And a last note, if you jailbroke successfully with RC1, you don’t need to re-jailbreak it.

Chances are, if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone, you know what SSH is. You know, browsing your iPhone from a terminal over WiFi. In most cases, you use SSH to add or remove files from the iPhone filesystem, and for such a simple task, using that terminal can be tricky. So I show you an alternative method: Use an FTP client that supports SSH.

If you run a website or server, you’ll know what an FTP client is. If not, in short terms, it will allow you to browse a remote location like a server or remote device via the internet. Some FTP clients have SSH support, which is what you’ll need to browse your iPhone. There are a bunch of FTP clients out there, but I recommend FileZilla, the open source client that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Yes, we already know I joined the dark side, although I haven’t pledged my allegiance to Steve. I don’t think I will be doing that anytime soon. I did choose to run with the dark side a while by purchasing this iPhone. What’s this deep dark world you ask? It’s the world of jailbreaking. I have had the original iPhone since launch day and I have never jailbroken it. I was not planning on jailbreaking this one either, but I saw some of the sick looking themes Winterboard allows for, so I dove off the deep end this morning.

I haven’t done much as far as customization or downloading, but I did find a theme that I like and made my own special edition lockscreen background to match the theme.

What are the must have apps now that I have entered this deep, dark world?

UPDATE: This is what I am looking like after last night…

Apparently in a new push to deal with those pesky jailbreakers once and for all. Apple has started using a new bootrom (iBoot-359.3.2) that the claims will make jailbreaking impossible.

While “impossible” is a mighty big word and open to doubt, we do know for certain that the chosen jailbreaking weapon of the Dev-Team (and therefore most other developers as well), 24kpwn, can’t work it’s magic on this bootrom.

Of course, I am sure that the people who unlike me be smart like that and develop jailbreaking tools will soon find a new exploit to make use of, but that will take time. Therefore, if you have your heart set on jailbreaking a new iPhone or iPod Touch, until further notice make sure you find one with an earlier bootrom.

A few things to note: if you’ve unlocked your iPhone and are using it on another carrier, this will break it. This tool only jailbreaks it, not unlocks it. Also, Windows Vista and 7 users, you MUST run this program as an administrator in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Stack V3 which is currently in private alpha was updated over the weekend to a new version and this thing is looking great! For those who don’t know, Stack V3 is an app which gives you, well, stacks, just like on the iPhone’s big brother, OS X Snow Leopard. I have actually donated to the developer for this app to get access and man this is looking great. It definitely still needs some work, don’t get me wrong, but this 2nd alpha version is a big leap forward. Just look at the changes in this new update:

New in Alpha 2:
• Multiple Stacks
• Dimming of screen when opening a Stack
• Reflective Dock support
• Support for iTunes 9’s App Management
• Stack Update Notifications (notification when there’s a new version available)
• New Grid View animations (temporary)
• Stacks are findable/openable using Spotlight
• Badge Support – currently disabled while I try and fix some issues
• The Stack image (both the open and closed Stack) are now per-Stack (you can theme different Stacks to have different icons)

This app requires a jailbroken device to be able to run and the only way to get this on a stock iPhone is to pray to the iGods and hope that Apple decides that they like this idea and decides to copy it. There are some known bugs and some missing features, hence the reason it is in the alpha testing phase. I highly suggest all of you who are jailbroken at the very minimum toss him a beer for his hard work and try this app out. Right now it is not available via Cydia and must be installed manually via SSH. It’s great apps like this that make the jailbreak process totally worth it. Once this app is fully matured, this will definitely be replacing Categories as my go to app organization method.

Are you scared to jailbreak because you are unsure how? Here’s quite possibly the best, layman’s instructions how to do so with the newest firmware.

Unlocking vs Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone are two different hacks which allow you to take control over your mobile device in different ways. Jailbreaking is a type of hack that lets you install unapproved third-party applications on your iPhone or iPod Touch from searchable repositories provided by apps like Cydia and Icy. Unlocking, on the other hand, is a hack that lets you use your iPhone on another cellular network. Here in the U.S., that means you can use the iPhone on T-Mobile instead of AT&T. You have to first jailbreak your phone before you can unlock it, but you don’t have to unlock a phone in order to jailbreak it.

Unfortunately, what once was a relatively simple process has gotten more complex over time as new iPhone models were introduced and new hacking tools were being put out by multiple parties, often with confusing names like the Pwnage Tool, Purplesn0w, redsn0w and the like. With each release of iPhone firmware, it seems as if there’s a whole new lexicon of terms to master and new procedures to follow. The 3.1.2 jailbreak is no exception.

Sarah Perez lays out the complete instructions on how to jailbreak 3.1.2 using the blackra1n software. This is only available to Windows users currently though.

What do you think of jail breaking?

The new iPhone OS 3.1 update which may or may not be released tomorrow at the “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” event will break your ultrasn0w unlock, possibly permanently. The unlock relies on a certain exploit found in the 3.0 baseband (radio controller) to allow for the unlock and most times this cannot be reverted to the old version unlike the normal firmware which apparently can be reverted.

So for those of you out there who have used redsn0w, Pwnagetool, etc. to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch and the ultrasn0w users out there using the dev team’s soft unlock……BEWARE! ;)

(Remember and wait for the dev team to declare the update safe or not safe before you update or else you will lose your jailbreak and all the cool stuff such as winterboard and sbsettings that comes with it)
