Of course, keep in mind that AdMob is in the process of being acquired by Google (feel the noose tightening?) but still, ad page views don’t lie.

Of course Apple’s iPhone is still the leader in terms devices people use to surf the mobile web, but Android has increased worldwide with it’s main gains in the US. in America, six months ago Android had about 7 percent of the mobile ad requests, now a whopping 20 percent.

Of those 20 percent, about a quarter were on a Moto Droid, while 6 percent were on a Motorola Cliq. This means that Motorola is responsible for about a third of all Android use in the US, clearly making them the Android vanguard. Not bad for a company left for dead last year.

Now, if Motorola will be able to base long term growth on these numbers or if they are just reaping the short term benefits of being Google’s Android 2.0 poster child remains to be seen. Remember word is that Google has already moved on and is holding HTC’s hand as they make the NEXT flagship Android device, the Dragon. Without Google pushing them along Motorola could very easily make the Droid their new RAZR, churning out subtle variations and updates on their hit phone for years until they have sucked it dry….and then have nothing new to offer.

During the gaping silence from AT&T regarding all things Android, there has been a small admittance to the end of the iPhone exclusivity to AT&T, yet Android seems to be overtaking market. Sprint has launched the HTC Hero, T-Mobile currently has the myTouch 3G, and Verizon debuted the Motorola Droid and Eris, so I’m wondering if with Sony Ericsson X10 will grace AT&T before the rumored Motorola Motus. Sony Style stores started offering AT&T service with their handsets on November 19th, so it wouldn’t be a huge leap for both Sony and AT&T to follow the same path for the X10. And then Motus makes the scene again this week for the first time since it passed through the FCC in late October with a blurry photo op and interesting AT&T-compatible specs:

Seems some are having speaker problems with the new Droid phone in which a reboot seems to fix it for a while. Here is what Engadget has to say:

It’s no reason to panic just yet, but apparently a good amount of people are having trouble with the external speaker on their Motorola Droid cutting out for no reason. It seems to be software-related, and sometimes a reboot fixes it temporarily, but it’s a scary problem for people relying on the handset as an alarm clock (or, you know, to receive calls), since you never know when it will strike next. For its part it seems that Motorola is replacing handsets that have the issue, though that’s no guarantee of escape from the clutches of silence. Let’s hope Motorola updates us with a software patch or some other serious solution soon — people need to hear that robotic "Droooiiid" alert sound — and meanwhile let us know if you’ve been seeing a similar issue.

Engadget is taking a poll so if you are having issues head on over and vote

Looks like someone is trying to sell a Motorola Droid before they even have it. The bidding started at $899.99 and there has already been one person that placed a bid on it. Seems like this seller just took pics from the web and plans on selling the device the day he gets it (on the page it says Oct 29th) but no date has been set in stone by Verizon as of yet. I wish this was true people, but it doesn’t seem so.

Anyhow, the Motorola Droid is the device that Motorola and Verizon are targeting the iPhone with and Boy Genius has had the device at least a couple days.

Motorola has decided to drop down to associate membership in the LiMo Foundation, the group that shepherds Mobile Linux which they founded alone with Samsung to promote the use of Mobile Linux.

Associate membership means they cannot hold posts in the Foundation and effectively makes Motorola an observer…on the board that they founded. What’s more, I saw a report that Motorola demanded that the LiMo Foundation stop listing Moto as a founder. Is Google that jealous a master? Technically Google with it’s Linux-based Android OS would be a natural to join the LiMo Foundation, but it has been noted often by Linux evangelists that it has refused to.

No word on if other LiMo board members who also make Android devices, such as fellow founder Samsung, will follow Moto’s lead.

Namely they are ruining any chance for developers to make a single app for the OS, forcing them to make apps on a device by device basis, just as happened to Windows Mobile. Of course this is only one of the problems that Microsoft has had to deal with in their Mobile OS (even Steve Ballmer admits that)…but development chaos is certainly not the smallest.

In Motorola’s recent announcement concerning Ecosystem partners, they made clear that these third party software producers, such as QuickOffice and Quickplay Media aren’t making apps for Android, they are making apps for the Motorola Cliq and it’s MotoBlur environment…and that is a very bad thing for Android as an operating system.

After being one of the flagship Windows Mobile vendors just a year or two ago, Motorola is not releasing a SINGLE Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, despite the fact that nearly every other major vendor is releasing at least one. A spokesman for Moto is saying that they are waiting for Windows Mobile 7 but I am somewhat dubious that they will be able to make the jump directly from 6.1 (on the Moto Q9c) to 7, especially as their entire focus is now on Android and they are rumored to have jettisoned their entire WinMo development team in recent layoffs.

While I can understand that they view this as putting 110 percent behind the Cliq and upcoming Android handsets, some analogy about eggs and baskets keeps coming to mind. On top of that, this seems like a pretty high handed move by a company that is two steps away from abject financial humiliation and receivership. The fact that early hands on reports on the Cliq have been less then stellar certain doesn’t help.

However, Moto does seem to be attracting lots of help for the Android phones, including a number of somewhat B-list “partners” who are making applications for them.

In their press release about their new “Ecosystem Partners”, Moto lists some of their new best friends..

Signature applications are designed to help consumers personalize their phones so that their experience is uniquely tailored to their lifestyle. With Android-powered Motorola devices, like the recently announced Motorola CLIQ™ with MOTOBLUR™, consumers will be able to access content, multi-media offerings and stay connected through applications from partners such as Accuweather, Amazon MP3, Barnes & Noble, CardStar, Comcast Entertainment Group, Hands On Mobile, Howcast.com, Midomi, MySpace, QuickOffice, QuickPlay Media, RJDJ, Superpages.com, and Travel Channel.

So MySpace but not Facebook, no sign of Twitter, Amazon for music but not ebooks, Barnes and Noble instead, QuickOffice not Documents to Go…am I alone in being underwhelmed by this Ecosystem?

Their latest QWERTY handset, the Motorola CLIQ, runs Android OS skinned with the MOTOBLUR interface. The slide-out keyboard mechanism looks as solid as my HTC Kaiser’s and the keys appear evenly spaced for easy typing. Aggregating several different social networks together into an RSS-style on the home screen simplifies multiple services and can easily translate into a timesaver. I’ll be looking forward to more downloadable widgets and the Motorola CLIQ’s home network after going to T-Mobile this fall, which hopefully means an eventual leap to AT&T for the iPhone disinclined. Check out the MOTOBLUR simulator online or a hands-on video at Boy Genius Report.

Early indications are that the MB200 is the Motorola Morrison that had images leaked last month. As for the MB300 which is said to be more “premium” then the MB200, it could be the Calgary. We will know for sure tomorrow but based on this information, somehow I don’t think this will be the big rescue that Motorola’s handset division needs. A third handset, the Shoals, is also to be included in the event and has been generating some buzz…so all you Moto fans, pin your hopes on that one.

It is unclear if they were unhappy with the hardware, the Android software, the integration of the two, or any combination of the above.

It is interesting to note however that Ed Hansberry at Information Week is saying that both Moto Android handsets had originally been prototyped using Windows Mobile. Perhaps these are phones which were originally meant to be WinMo handsets but were flipped to Android when Moto <strike>became desperate</strike> chose to develop more Android offerings instead of Windows Mobile (Et Tu, Brutus?). If so, the integration or Android deployment may be less then what AT&T was hoping for.

Either way, this leaves AT&T without an Android phone after three tries, all rejected for mysterious reasons by the carrier giant. Am I just paranoid, but does anyone else see Apple’s hand behind this somewhere?

It is also a massive blow to Motorola, who has put all it’s eggs in an Android basket at this point. Moto has a major Android event coming up in conjunction with Verizon and T-Mobile. If they fail to make an impression there, then this really could be the end of Motorola, Hail Mary play with Android or no.

Samsung has TouchWiz, HTC skinned their Hero with Sense, and now Motorola has decided to infuse the user experience with a little more than just minor fixes. According to Boy Genius Report, Motorola seeks to skin the Android OS with “Blur.” Users will be “heavily connected” to social networking sites with the new UI’s auto-updating over air capabilities.

All Android devices will be able to upgrade different sections of the OS and interface all over the air. There’s been something mentioned about a device key that’s attached to your email and passwords for your social networking accounts. What this presumably does is let all the content be pushed right to the device from the web which includes updates and actual upgrades.

If Blur will instantly push content to handsets, the Nokia N97, HTC Sense UI, and Samsung TouchWiz will have some strong competition. The whole reason why the Nokia N97 is still so appealing is the capability of having detailed web content updates, like Facebook and Twitter statuses, on a home screen without having to open full applications. There’s a lot to be said for easily accessible, auto-updating, rich content, and Motorola is ready to innovate. Let’s just see how much.
