Ebooks: Nook Software Updated on iPhone, iPad

Posted by Zealot on Aug 17, 2010 | 3 Comments

The Ebook Reader wars rage on, now moving over to features as Barnes & Noble has released updates to their iPhone and iPad software (and some enhancements for the PC client as well), bringing them more in line with the capabilities of the Nook reader itself. The addition that will likely cause the biggest reaction amongst readers (and therefore from Apple and Amazon) is the ability to lend an ebook. This feature has...

Ebooks: B&N’s Next Move – Boutiques

Posted by Zealot on Aug 02, 2010 | 10 Comments

The Ebook Reader War continues. Amazon just scored a major victory and a lot of attention with the double barreled attack of new models AND another price cut on their Kindle ebook readers. Considering that Barnes & Noble had just introduced a new WiFi only Nook as well as dropping the prices on the 3G model a few weeks ago, to lower prices again so soon would look more than a little desperate. However, B&N NEEDS...

Ebooks: Reader Sales Fall Short and New Models Coming

Posted by Zealot on Jul 28, 2010 | 1 Comment

Times were harder for ebook readers in Q2 than we had thought, and Digitimes has some interesting numbers concerning sales today. In the second quarter of 2010 1.35 million e-book readers were shipped worldwide. Sounds pretty good for a niche product doesn’t it? However,  2.02 million units had been expected to be shipped so the reality fell short by about a third. This could be due to pressure from the iPad and anticipation...

Ebooks: The Patent War Begins With a Sneak Attack

Posted by Zealot on Jul 06, 2010 | 5 Comments

Just when you thought the battle lines were clear, the Kindle takes the conflict into Patents and leads off with a killer first strike. Amazon has stunned the entire ebook world with the revelation that four whole years ago they applied for patents that have just been granted, which if enforced broadly, could mean that the Nook, Spring Designs’ Alex and maybe more ebook readers are all in violation and owe Amazon money...

Ebooks: Now what?

Posted by Zealot on Jun 22, 2010 | 22 Comments

Well we all knew it was coming. The arrival of the iPad and the pressure that Apple suddenly began to apply to the Ebook Reader market was bound to have an effect, just as Apple and the iPhone forced the telecom industry to respond just be being there. I was also pretty sure that the first thing that the iPad would affect would be price. After all, it is the easiest thing for most tech vendors to change as it simply...

Ebooks: Nook Follows Borders Down – UPDATED

Posted by Zealot on Jun 21, 2010 | 6 Comments

When Borders announced they would be selling the Kobo ebook reader for $149 and the Libre reader for $119, I knew that either Amazon or Barnes & Noble, and likely both, would have to blink on price. They would not be able to have their flagship devices continue to sell for more than $100 more than a serious competitor. Something was going to have to give. At first it was 50 dollar discounts and gift cards for free...

E-Books: iBooks Redux

Posted by Zealot on Jun 08, 2010 | 11 Comments

Slipped into all the noise of the iPhone 4 announcement, Steve Jobs had some interesting concerning the future of iBooks. As we all assumed he would, he followed the normal Apple pattern of announcing expanded functionality for a product announced in the previous big event. In this case Apple is opening up iBooks to PDF reading, annotations and proper bookmarking, which are very important steps in the evolution of the...

The Year of the Ebook: The Story Thus Far

Posted by Zealot on May 20, 2010 | 17 Comments

Half a year ago I went out on a limb here and predicted that 2010 would be The Year of the Ebook, with ebook readership and ebook reader purchases finally breaking out during 2010. When I wrote that, the Nook was soon to arrive, along with other heavily hyped devices like the Sony Reader Daily and some kind of tablet/reader from Apple. Also, every major tech vendor was saying they had an ebook reader in the works, each...

Zune unfairly compared in Business Insider article

Posted by Adam Stafford on Dec 11, 2009 | 7 Comments

Dan Frommer of Business Insider, recently wrote an article comparing the poor adoption of the Barnes & Noble Nook reader’s to the that of the Microsoft Zune media players release in 2006.  Stating: We can’t remember a bloodier beating since Microsoft first unveiled its Zune in 2006. He goes on to compare the nook and Zune just as we have seen before with many pundits that still believe the iPod and...

Barnes and Noble Nook – Video 1st Look

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 10, 2009 | 5 Comments

I got the Nook in yesterday and had a little time to play. I shot a short video of the Nook for your viewing please (or displeasure). I am not sure how good the video came out, I didn’t proof it and I was asleep when I shot it. Well, I wasn’t really, but might as well have been. So tired, so busy. Fun fun! Barnes and Noble Nook – Unboxed

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 09, 2009 | 10 Comments

I received the Barnes and Noble Nook. I will provide some video an opinions later, but for now, here are some photos I shot with the Samsung Omnia II. All I can say initially is… It’s smaller than I imagined. AKPC_IDS += "34753,"; Read More →

Nooks are shipping now…

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 07, 2009 | 11 Comments

My fear of another “Sorry, here’s another useless gift for your troubles” has just been extinguished with this email received moments ago. Some families are going to have good Christmas’ this year, at least my wife will. AKPC_IDS += "34702,"; Read More →

Engadget has got the Nook…

Posted by Chris Leckness on Dec 06, 2009 | 7 Comments

Ok, if you weren’t listening to pop music in the 80s, that title might not mean anything. As the rest of the world waits impatiently for their Nooks, myself included, Engadget has some eye candy for you. They have published their “Review” of the Nook. In the end, the Nook is an intriguing product launched by a powerful force in the world of booksellers, but the initial offering feels long on promises and short...

Ebooks: No Nook is Good Nook

Posted by Zealot on Dec 04, 2009 | 4 Comments

Alright, I apologize about the headline but I just couldn’t resist, especially as I have some good news for Nook buyers, at long last. Remember that lawsuit against Barnes & Noble filed by Spring Designs, requesting an injunction to keep B&N from selling the hot new gadget until their copyright infringement case was settled? Well as was widely expected a judge weighed in against the injunction, so sales of...

My Nook is no longer on Schedule, Gift Offered…

Posted by Chris Leckness on Nov 30, 2009 | 18 Comments

The other day I shared that my Nook’s delivery seemed to be on scheduled based on the status on their website. This was checked out based on info that many are getting 2010 ship dates on this thing. Well, I got an email today that changes that status a little. Instead of getting it 2-3 days from now, it seems it’s going to be December 9th now. On December 7th, will I get an email saying December 14th? Good thing they...

My Nook seems to be on schedule still

Posted by Chris Leckness on Nov 24, 2009 | 4 Comments

With all the buzz that about the Barnes and Noble Nook being delayed and new orders getting ship dates into 2010, I decided that I should take a look at my order since this is my wife’s Christmas present.   This is good to know, those 2010 dates had me concerned. AKPC_IDS += "30321,"; Read More →

Ebooks: Nook and Kindle News

Posted by Zealot on Nov 22, 2009 | 10 Comments

In terms of Holiday Ebook Reader Sales it appears that it is boiling down to a two horse race, the Kindle versus the Nook….and with the Nook the jumps just keep getting higher and higher. Now the New York Times is reporting that if you order a Nook today you will not see it before January 4th, but as I had predicted Barnes and Noble WILL send you a nice holiday themed order confirmation before Christmas in place of...

Nook Ebook Reader: Dec 11th?

Posted by Zealot on Nov 08, 2009 | 9 Comments

A very reliable tipster informed me today that a B&N store employee was asked some questions about the Nook this weekend. Apparently she claimed that the built in WiFi on the Ebook Reader will only be able to connect with AT&T hotspots. This seems to me like pure nonsense, and I have seen B&N reps online stating that you can access your eBook library from anywhere internationally via WiFi, not just AT&T...

Spring Design Knocks Nook

Posted by Zealot on Nov 03, 2009 | 6 Comments

I suppose we should have seen this coming. A major retailer leaks innovative images of an upcoming Ebook Reader, an unknown outsider announces a very similar innovation in a similar project right before the major retailer has a big splashy event rolling out the Reader. You don’t have to be John Grisham to write what happens next…a lawsuit. Spring Design has decided that the Barnes & Noble Nook (on the right) looks...

Back on the Ebook Beat

Posted by Zealot on Oct 27, 2009 | 14 Comments

Lots of interesting tidbits over the last few days concerning Ebook Readers. First of all some news concerning Barnes and Noble’s plans. In addition to the upcoming nook, last week’s most buzz-worthy gadget, B&N has announced via Twitter that they will also be carrying Plastic Logic’s Que “Business Class” Ebook Reader in Barne’s and Noble stores. The Que is a large screen device (8.5 x11) designed to...
