Samsung and Verizon Announce the Samsung Omnia II

Here’s a good surprise for your Monday morning, Verizon gets the Samsung Omnia II. The Samsung Omnia II is a Windows Mobile 6.5 touch screen phone and Verizon will have it on Dec. 2 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate on a 2 year. The Omnia II features a full virtual QWERTY keyboard with Swype technology that allows customers to input text faster and easier with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. The Omnia II is also features the Samsung Widget Store, which provides customers with the ability to download hundreds of free widgets. Additional features include a full HTML Web browsing capabilities with Opera 9.5 enhanced browser, access to social networking applications and a 5.0 megapixel camera with flash and auto-focus and camcorder and decoder with DNSe technology and on-device editing capabilities.

Omnia Goes Big Behind WinMo 6.5

Samsung appears to be rivaling with LG to see which Korean vendor can show Windows Mobile 6.5 the most love.

According to a Samsung Press Release appearing on YTN, Samsung is releasing a whole pack of models in their Omnia line, all now slated to run Windows Mobile 6.5.

The Omnia Series will feature five devices: the OmniaPRO B7610, OmniaPRO B7320, OmniaPRO B7330, OmniaLITE (B7300), as well as the already announced Omnia II (I8000) with an updated Windows Mobile? 6.5 operating system. Samsung will release the series later this year and announce a set of customized strategies to differentiate and expand sales of each model by appealing to a broad spectrum of user groups.

Within the OmniaPRO lineup, the OmniaPRO B7610 is the premium device, featuring a high-resolution 3.5 inch AMOLED display and QWERTY keyboard. The OmniaPRO B7320 and OmniaPRO B7330 will target businessmen with a QWERTY keyboard and email/wireless internet capabilities. The OmniaPRO B7330 will feature HSDPA 7.2 Mps, HSUPA 2.0 Mps and Windows Mobile 6.5, providing the most versatile option for emailing and wireless internet use. Rounding out the new series, the OmniaLITE will have a user-friendly interface and various multimedia functions for younger users.

That sounds like quite a lineup, but even more interesting then that Samsung has announced that all existing Omnia series devices will be updated from WinMo 6.1 to 6.5. This is the first clear promise of an update I have heard from any vendor or carrier.

Samsung Electronics plans to feature Windows Mobile? 6.5 on all Omnia Series devices after its release, while offering an update to 6.5 on the Omnia II, OmniaPRO B7610, and OmniaPRO B7320, previously shipped with Windows Mobile 6.1. Please contact your mobile operator and/or local Samsung office for updateability details.

All of this is exciting news for Omnia owners and fans of Windows Mobile. At least for the moment, it appears the road to Windows Mobile 6.5 runs through Seoul.

So, Palm…any hope of an update for the Treo Pro?

Samsung Louvre = the Omnia Pro?

I really don’t care what it is called, I like it a lot. The folks at the Unwired View passed this tidbit along saying that reportedly, the Omnia Pro is none other than the Windows Mobile 6.1 Samsung Louvre B7610. What caught my attention was this neat picture that definitely got my “device envy” juices flowing.

The Omnia Pro has a wide 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixels, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Check out these specs after the break:

Bluetooth Icon for Samsung Omnia and Epix

Here is a very neat free download for users of the Samsung Omnia and the Samsung Epix. For some reason, the Bluetooth icon does not appear on the task bar when it is activated but not to worry folks because the folks at CareAce have decided to develop a patch to display the Bluetooth icon when Bluetooth is activated.

There is also another very addition to their little application.They have included adjusted the icon for when the Bluetooth transmission is visible or not by utilizing the letter v right next to the Bluetooth icon.

The video below shows the patch at work. Give it a try, I think you will like it!

FingerPoint for the Omnia

In fact that is what an Omnia user did when he got tired of the application launcher on the Samsung Omnia. So he decided to write his own and I think it is very cool! Called FingerPoint, it is a sleek application launcher that is very finger touch friendly (as you watch the video you will see just how friendly it is).

Verizon Drops the Omnia’s Price Already!

According to Engadget, Verizon has come down on the price of their Samsung Omnia by $70 already. Many are speculating that the Omnia just doesn’t have what it takes to compete with the iPhone, the G1, and others. I know I would love to have a GSM version for $199.

Christmas coming to Verizon

It looks like Verizon is about to get ready for Christmas with several new devices for you to give your best friend (and maybe one for yourself). The folks at Phone Arena got some great news that next month you will see the Samsung OMNIA SCH-i910, the HTC Touch Pro and the Samsung Saga SCH-i770. Each of these devices have great looks and neat features; certainly it will be a tough choice on which one to get … ah, go ahead, get all three!

AT&T Phones Coming from Samsung, Not Just HTC…

We are real excited about what could be the next “Tilt” on the AT&T Network. It’s supposed to be the Fuze. Well, HTC isn’t the only device maker hitting AT&T with Windows Mobile Action. Samsung is supposedly hitting AT&T in force soon…

First up is the A767 “Sangria,” which apparently borrows the i620 and i640’s style but drops Windows Mobile to turn it into a strictly consumer device that’s targeted for launch in late October. Next up, the A867 (cutesy name unknown) sorta looks like the mighty Omnia from its FCC filing, but it probably isn’t for a couple very good reason: first, the FCC filing makes no mention of WiFi, and second, Samsung’s smartphones start with “i.” Finally, that i907 Mirage — you know, the one everyone thought (hoped) might actually be the Omnia — is said to actually be AT&T’s version of the i780, featuring Windows Mobile Professional, triband HSDPA, a 2-megapixel cam, and that optical mouse Samsung has been featuring on its higher-end devices as of late.

Samsung OMNIA Review

There are a lot of well done reviews starting to appear on the Samsung OMNIA. Phone Arena has done a great job with their review giving you a pretty good run down on the device as well as providing you with a slew of pictures to look at.

Translated from Greek, the name of Samsung’s new model means ‘everything’ and its main purpose is to fully satisfy the needs of the modern cell phone user. This is a phone with a unique combination of characteristics such as 5-megapixel camera, large touch display and GPS, taking advantage of the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform. In addition, this is the first device with a built-in support of not only DivX, but XviD video. The logical question ‘Can it cook?’ comes to mind …

So what was their final verdict? They think it is a great all-in-one device. The OMNIA performed very well in every aspect and offers a wonderful combination of a 5-megapixel camera, media player, internet browser and GPS navigation. They were impressed with the quality sound during a conversation. There was one serious drawback in their opinion and that was the interface, which they felt should have been much easier to use for the mass consumer.

Some Pictures of the Samsung OMNIA Windows Mobile Smartphone

Arne Hess from the::unwired got his hands on the Samsung SGH-i900 OMNIA (really a prototype) and has quite a few pictures for you to see.

Running on Windows Mobile 6.1, the Samsung i900 is powered by a Marvel I 320LV which supports quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps. Furthermore, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR are on board as well as a an FM radio and a GPS receiver. The 3.2″ WQVGA (240 x 400 pixel) touch screen features haptics and vibrations give users feedback when the display is touched. The built-in autofucus camera supports 5.0 megapixel and Samsung will offer two versions of the i900 – one with 8 GB and one with 16 GB inbuilt memory which is even expandable with microSD memory cards.

Further features are TV-out and according to previous information, a TV-out cable comes with the device. At a size of 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 mm, the i900 features a 1440 mAh battery.

Samsung i900 Omnia … it’s real!

Rumors are great when they finally come true and the rumored Samsung i900 is finally about to be a reality. Called the Omnia, this is one Windows Mobile device that should be strong competition for the upcoming 3G iPhone and when you look at what this device comes with, it may well top the new HTC Touch Diamond. At a glance you get Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, a 3.2-inch WideQVGA display (240 x 400 pixels) and an optical mouse much like the one found in the Samsung i780. A 5 megapixel auto focus camera using face and smile detection is a big attraction for those that want a decent camera with their device. In addition there is a built-in GPS receiver.
