Opera 10 Beta has been upgraded to Beta 2 and after downloading it to the Tilt2 web pages seem a little faster, scrolling is smoother and the slow focusing problem seems to have gone away. So if you are aching to try something different hit the link to download or go to m.opera.com/mobile from your current browser to download it directly. Also though not recommended for WM phones Opera Mini 5 beta 2 has been released as well. so if you have a BlackBerry or other mobile phone you can go to m.opera.com/next from your mobile device for that download

Opera Mobile – New beta released

If you are an Opera user then there is a NEW beta (9.7b1) out that you can try. There are a few issues but I am sure they will be worked out rather quickly. Note that when you go to the download page, there is a NEW Widgets Manager add-on for Touchscreen devices.

Is that a widget on your screen?

You’re probably very familiar with the plethora of widget or gadget technologies on the web or your desktop by now – Vista Sidebar, Windows Sideshow, Google, Yahoo and Microsofts web and desktop offerings as well as a collection of Web 2.0 offerings that it’s pointless to try and enumerate because it would already be out of date.

Well, they continue to spread and Access (the folks behind the NetFront browser which has been doing a great job on Palm and Windows Mobile for several years) have brought a gadget runtime framework to Windows Mobile Professional (aka Touch or PocketPC) devices that they call Netfront Browser Widgets.

Installation and setup on my HTC Diamond was quick and simple. You need to register at the Netfront Browser Widgets site and from there download the installer to your phone (though you can do it over the air I found it easier via the desktop browser)

Take Opera with you … on your USB Flash Drive

Opera USB has the same features as a normal desktop version where you can surf the web, write emails, use IRC while having your contacts, bookmarks and settings with you – anytime and everywhere. It is a pretty simple process to get going. You just Extract the file directly onto your USB Device or Harddisk – That’s all !

- there are no unwanted effects on IE or other browsers
- existing Opera versions are not affected
- make no entries to the registry
- works with every Windows PC (company,Internetcafe, friends,..)
- leave no data on the host computer

So, what do i need for Opera@USB ? A computer with an internet connection and a USB Flashdrive with about 15 MB space left. Check it out; it is pretty cool!

Browsing gets better

With the advent of Safari on the iPhone there’s been a bit of a shake-up in the mobile internet experience – or at least the expectations.

Out of the box Windows Mobile comes with cut down version of Internet Explorer called IEMobile (aka PocketIE) which, while reliable, is getting a little long in the tooth.

IEMobile is based on IE5 so there are many sites that can take advantage of the capabilities available on mobile devices today. With the advent of IE6 for Windows Mobile things should only get better.

Of course, that’s in the future – what can you do today for a better browsing experience?

Windows Mobile and Opera Mobile 9.5

Matt Miller has a neat article that you might want to read where he talks about WIndows Mobile and the new Opera Mobile browser. Part of Matt’s discussion is his use of a mobile device and his need for web browsing. His biggest issue up to now has been the been the limitations you see with these browsers. In particular, he said the iPhone had the best for strictly browsing, but (there is always a BUT) it didn’t allow you to do much else (copy, paste, save, etc.). That could be reason #31 …

IMHO, Opera Mobile 9.5 is even better than the iPhone’s Safari browser because I can perform functions like text selection, copy and paste, manage passwords, and save or send images from a web page. The only pages that found incompatible so far are Google Docs. I was able to view spreadsheets in Google Docs, but not word processing documents. I could not edit either though, but since I don’t use Google Docs very much it isn’t a concern for me. One major improvement is that I can now access the custom WordPress ZDNet blog management page. With Opera Mobile 9.5 and the HTC Advantage I can perform blogging on the go with a single ultra mobile device.
