Verizon and Samsung Mobile Announce The Omnia

We all knew it was coming, all that was left was for the official word, and here it is. Priced at $249 with contract, the Omnia should do fine for those that don’t want to mess with the Storm. Personally, I would rather get the Touch Pro (very similar to the AT&T Fuze) that Verizon recently announced though. Read on to the Press Release posted for full specs.

AT&T Mirage? The Samsung Omnia

Engadget Mobile is reporting on a rumor that the Samsung Omnia that some are trying to slap the iPhone killer label on, might be coming to AT&T as the AT&T Mirage.

The Omnia has already become a pretty popular Windows Mobile device and it sure would be nice to see another solid WM phone added to the AT&T device lineup. I just wish people would stop calling everything with a touch screen “the iPhone Killer”. It’s not like Apple invented the touch screen anyhow.

Samsung OMNIA first impressions … better than the iPhone

Matt Miller from ZDNet.com posted some interesting first impressions on the Samsung OMNIA and his thoughts are that it can clearly show that Windows Mobile can beat the iPhone. I would expect that!! It is a great piece and well worth reading Matt’s thoughts. It is expensive (US$675) and is only available a few select countries but it is a tempting device. Matt ended his piece by saying:

The OMNIA is better than the iPhone in so many ways: I know some may say it isn’t fair to compare the iPhone with more powerful smartphones, but here is a random order list in which the Samsung OMNIA looks to be a more capable product that you may want to consider (even without US 3G support):

Ability to rotate in three directions in all applications
Ability to connect to A2DP headphones or a Bluetooth keyboard
Ability to tether the device to a PC with a wired or wireless connection
5 megapixel camera that captures video and has image stabilization with flash
Download and store podcasts wirelessly
Access the file system and connect as a flash drive or via Bluetooth to a PC
FM radio with RDS support
Office Mobile support (creation and editing)
Cut, copy, and paste
Handwriting recognition
3rd party navigation and turn-by-turn direction support

Samsung OMNIA Review

There are a lot of well done reviews starting to appear on the Samsung OMNIA. Phone Arena has done a great job with their review giving you a pretty good run down on the device as well as providing you with a slew of pictures to look at.

Translated from Greek, the name of Samsung’s new model means ‘everything’ and its main purpose is to fully satisfy the needs of the modern cell phone user. This is a phone with a unique combination of characteristics such as 5-megapixel camera, large touch display and GPS, taking advantage of the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform. In addition, this is the first device with a built-in support of not only DivX, but XviD video. The logical question ‘Can it cook?’ comes to mind …

So what was their final verdict? They think it is a great all-in-one device. The OMNIA performed very well in every aspect and offers a wonderful combination of a 5-megapixel camera, media player, internet browser and GPS navigation. They were impressed with the quality sound during a conversation. There was one serious drawback in their opinion and that was the interface, which they felt should have been much easier to use for the mass consumer.
