Sharp just announced it’s new “Netwalker” line of Ultra Teeny Tiny Internet Device with No Market to Speak Of (UTTIDWNMTSO), starting with the PC71, a 6.3 x 4.2 x .9-inch device featuring a five inch touchscreen, Ubuntu OS and glorified thumbboard. It is running an ARM Cortex-A8 based processor, with 4GB of storage and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (but no 3G)….and makes me feel more than a little like Mr. Peabody. I am SURE I have seen this device before in my travels.

Now while I think the device IS sort of cool looking, admit it Sharp, it’s a PDA.

Solar and Waterproof!

it looks like this AU Green Road Project and its waterproof, solar powered device might become a reality.

Scheduled for a June release, AU (KDDI) and Sharp will introduce this phone in Japan. An embedded solar panel will recharge the phone on the go and if placed in direct sunlight for up to 10 minutes will give up to 1 minute of communication or 2hrs on standby. Not bad! Oh, BTW, did I say it’s also waterproof too?

Willcom D4 naked

You guessed, I’m talking about pictures showing what is inside of one of these machines. In one of the pictures you can see the Clock Gen info, something that is needed to overclock by soft the machine.

Willcom D4 UMPC, good in pictures but…

The Willcom D4 is a very good looking UMPC but is it that good in real life. Apparently judging the comments from Tech On, it’s not.

(1) Short battery life (claimed: 1.5 hours, measured: about 1 hour)
(2) When not locked, it easily starts up even when something touches the screen by accident.
(3) Its surface quickly becomes dirty with fingerprints.
(4) The cooler fan is noisier than expected.
(5) You can’t operate the D4 while wearing one of the standard-length straps available on the market.
(6) The location of the mouse button on the left makes it difficult to press when using the keyboard.
(7) The optional Bluetooth handset seems to be required to quickly answer incoming calls.
(8) It becomes so hot that your hands or your desk also get hot.

Let me say that if you read the article, the author got the D4 about the same day the iPhone 3G was released and like he says, he was expecting from a D4 to be a real competition to the Apple device. Sorry… but UMPC are far from being SmartPhones though I should admit that 1 hour of battery life is just ridiculous. Even 1.5 hours is really really bad.

I do like this, it really looks nice but I question the RAM, it is just not enough but it is still worth looking at ….

Willcom D4 UMPC

I don’t know why there are gadgets that are only released in Japan when they could be best sellers in everywhere in the world. And this could be one of those cases, a new UMPC from Sharp that is going to be only sold in Japan according to news published in CNET Asia.

This is another one of those Japan-only products which we can only dream of having. Willcom, an operator there, has just launched the Sharp-made D4, a UMPC based on the recently launched Intel Atom CPU.
