AT&T rethinking Google Voice and Skype? I hope so!

iPhone Buzz is reporting that another one of those infamous “sources close to the subject” claim that not only will Google Voice be allowed on the AT&T network but Skype could be coming along for the ride as soon as tomorrow. What this means is that AT&T would have had to work with not only Apple, but Google and Skype to get their apps lined up and approved for release in the App Store on the date of the announcement. Given the App Store review process, I’m not sure how likely that would be that AT&T could really influence Apple to help approve 2 apps, especially when Google Voice was rejected and Skype was gimped (by AT&T no less).

I personally hope this is really true as I use both services and would love to see this happen, especially Google Voice. I have said nothing but good things about the AT&T network in my area. I know that huge cities such as NYC and San Francisco who have probably at least 10x the number of AT&T and iPhone users as my city does do nothing but complain about dropped calls and lack of coverage. Those users will probably hate this announcement as it would just mean more problems for AT&T’s already strained network but with Verizon’s announcements today announcing Android phones and Google Voice support I’m not sure that AT&T has much of a choice at this point. AT&T has been the subject of much criticism for their network coverage/reliability and we all know how much Apple has been criticized over the App Store so we’ll have to wait and see if this pans out.

Skype for iPhone 1.1 Released

A new version of the communications workhorse Skype has been released for iPhone and iPod Touch users running OS 2.2 or 3.0.

useful new features in this release include the ability to access Skype voicemail from your iPhone as well as to send low cost SMS messages via your Skype client.

Usability has been improved, with some changes made to the dial pad and additional localization languages have also been added including Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish and Traditional Chinese (along with English of course).

Skype is an excellent program and a tremendous value, and is one of the few applications I use every day on multiple platforms.

Skype for WinMo Leaves Beta

Great news for those of us who use Skype on Windows Mobile devices. Skype for Windows Mobile 3.0 Beta is no longer Beta as the Gold release was yesterday, and to celebrate some additional features were added to this great application.

New and exciting for the release is the ability to share files with other Skype users, including photos, MP3 files, MS Office files or any other documents. On top of that, Skype for WinMo can handle SMS messages much more economically then your standard mobile operator. Sadly, not for free like the voice calls (assuming you are using WiFi) but still a good value. Skype is one of the few applications which I use every single day on multiple platforms, and I have watched it evolve from a one note Internet Telephony program to a full and powerful communications suite…and it’s FREE. Tough to beat that.

Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile runs on Windows Mobile 5, 6, and 6.1, with or without a touchscreen and requires 12MB of storage The installer may be downloaded from HERE.

Remember, data usage costs still apply when using Skype, if relevant.

Skype is now available for your iPhone

I don’t have an iPhone but I do use Skype; it is an invaluable resource for me in my everyday Windows Mobile routine especially when I am in Maine where cell signals are often rare at the shore. There has been a lot of discussion that it was coming but it is here. Skype has released their iPhone client for download from the Apple App Store.

The ability to use VOIP calls on Wi-Fi (as well as Skype Chat) will give you that extra added flexibility with your device that is often needed. If you want it then head over HERE.

Sorry Cnet, I just cut and pasted your title. There is not better way of putting it though. This is apparently going to be released and made available from iTunes on Tuesday at CTIA, but Cnet got some time with it a touch early.

Months after teasing us at CES with an announcement of Skype’s native VoIP client for the iPhone, the free Skype for iPhone will finally be available to download from the iTunes App Store sometime on Tuesday.

I use Skype all the time and find it very reliable in my day to day calls. Having it on my device will be a huge advantage for some of the calls I make. At this point in time, the devices that are supported are limited and one can only hope that Skype will make this beta version available for Windows Mobile devices soon.

Following recent moves to extend Skype conversations to a wide variety of new mobile and wireless devices, Skype is taking another major step as it continues to merge its internet communications software with mobile phones. Today, the company released a beta version of Skype for your mobile, a mobile “thin“ client that works on about 50 of the most popular Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Unlimited International Calls

As long as I have an Internet connection I can make a call and my experience with Skype’s unlimited calls to the U.S. and Canada for $3 a month has been nothing less than extraordinary. I would expect this new Skype plan will be just as good.

So what are they doing? Well, it is a pretty neat plan for those of you that have a real need to make overseas calls. Today, Skype introduced its first plan for unlimited calls to overseas phones and this plan will allow unlimited calls to land-line phones in 34 countries for $9.95 per month. The included countries are most of Europe as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

Calls to domestic land lines and cell phones are included as well, as are calls to cell phones in Canada, China, Hong Kong and Singapore, but not cell phones in other countries.
