Since the days of the Axim many hoped that Dell would get back in the fray. Hears hoping they offer the value that they had with the Axims. Any way here is what Engadget had to say.

Turns out Mini 3i is only the beginning. Dell has announced plans to create a new Communications Group with a focus on mobile phones and similar portable devices. Current consumer division head and former Motorola exec Ron Garriques will take the helm. Not much else to say at this point, but make no mistake, Dell is now officially in the phone business for the long haul.

Our illustrious leader Chris Leckness will probably throw a party.

I am glad they are out of the stage of publicizing any sex related gadget that they could find though and doing stuff like the post I am going to mention here. Anyhow, today I found a really interesting sounding post over on Jason Langridge’s blog. This post goes over how to do a back up on Windows Mobile, Android, Palm WebOS, Symbian, Blackberry, and iPhone. Most that have smartphones running one of those operating systems probably already know how to back up their phone, but this handy guide is still quite helpful.

During the gaping silence from AT&T regarding all things Android, there has been a small admittance to the end of the iPhone exclusivity to AT&T, yet Android seems to be overtaking market. Sprint has launched the HTC Hero, T-Mobile currently has the myTouch 3G, and Verizon debuted the Motorola Droid and Eris, so I’m wondering if with Sony Ericsson X10 will grace AT&T before the rumored Motorola Motus. Sony Style stores started offering AT&T service with their handsets on November 19th, so it wouldn’t be a huge leap for both Sony and AT&T to follow the same path for the X10. And then Motus makes the scene again this week for the first time since it passed through the FCC in late October with a blurry photo op and interesting AT&T-compatible specs:

At IDF 2009 Intel President (and previous Atom detractor) Paul Otellini explained that the Atom chipset was slowly metamorphosing into an SoC (System on a Chip, that is, a single chip CPU) specifically to transform from a netbook/notebook chip to a MID (Mobile Internet Device) chip. In that vein, he anticipated "a future where Intel ships more SoC cores than standard PC cores."

Otellini claimed that Intel has more than a dozen SoCs in development using as Atoms which utilize a common set of libraries and interconnect models. He has come a long way from last year, when he dismissed Atom chips as simply toys that would never compete on Intel’s bottom line with Celeron and Centrino chips….but there are those who question his vision of Atom chips spearheading a new sets of MIDs.

starting to hear rumors, and www.phonescoop.com says its confirmed that on Sep 6th, all new or upgraded smartphones, (WinMo, RIM, Symbian, and iPhone) will be required to sign a data plan.

As a person who needs Smartphones to be able to use a phone, this is damning news. Now those of us who like the functionality of a smartphone must now be forced into paying for data, no matter if we want it, or even use it.

Up until now this is what kept me happy with AT&T, it unlike its rival VZ did not force you into a data plan just because of what you “are” able to do with your device.
Looks like AT&T is getting greedy.

If this turns out to indeed be true, I will be letting AT&T know how unhappy I am with forcing this on us.
If I want data, or am going to use data…
Guess what AT&T, I’ll pay for data!

Finally. After 1,999 different rumors over the last 5 years, Dell has finally launched a phone. It was on display in China for the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones.

The 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel device with capacitive touchscreen was on display in China running the Android-based Open Mobile System (OMS). The Mini 3i was on-hand as part of the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG, and apparently, Dell. The candybar device lacks WiFi (or Chinese WAPI) and is strictly 2G GSM (no 3G) but does come with a 3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and 950mAh battery.

This is part of a launch in China, so really not much use for us in the US, but it brings hope (for me at least) that Dell might bring something to the US someday. To be honest, I was skeptical. All the rumors over the years that turned up dry had me convinced that Dell would never launch a phone, or Tablet PC.

Yes, there are few pictures posted in Engadget that shows the new Smartphone from Dell. And it will be using Android, so Dell said bye bye to Windows Mobile and joined Google’s club.

According to Gartner, the global economy is taking a bigger and bigger bite out of feature phone sales. They are reporting that as found by their recent study, just over 286 million handsets were sold in the second quarter worldwide this year, down 6.1% from the same quarter last year. This deepens the gloom from the first quarter of this year, which saw 9.4% decline. This is now officially the worst slump in mobile handset sales in history.

However, there is a ray of sunshine to be found in smartphones sales. Unlike feature phones, they are on the rise. In Q2/09, the sales of smartphones such as Apple Inc’s iPhone, Nokia Corp.’s N97, Palm’s Pre and the BlackBerry Bold rose by 27% to 41 million units globally, following similar gains last quarter. This is partially because vendors and service providers are using their marketing money to promote smartphones due to the higher profit margins and data plan revenue involved. However, I feel it also shows that feature phones are static, tending to come with standard, ubiquitous features with no strong reason for consumers to swap phones in these hard economic times. Unless you have to, why buy a new phone that is pretty much the same as your old one. Smartphones however are developing rapidly with higher speeds and more features, so people are more willing to trade up for the newest model. Also, smartphones are more likely to be used by tech enthusiasts or business people willing to spend more (or use corporate budget) for the latest devices.

Due to these numbers, I think we will see vendors continue to focus heavily on smartphones over feature phones in 2010, especially as we will see a massive increase in Android handsets and the debut of Windows Phone (aka Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7). All of that new shiny will just further drive the growth of smartphones over feature phones.

Manufactures are always cautious when new OS are released and that explains why we did not see right after the Android OS release a bunch of other devices in the market. But that does not mean the Android is a failure. Anyone following the Android Community and the developing of Android OS knows the huge activity around Android. The Cupcake version was released for developers this week. This version includes natively Video recording, something that iPhone still dreaming with. This shows the power of an Open Source OS in the hands of the right people. Today we have pictures and videos of a new Samsung Phone that will be released soon using Android.

The Smartphone also looks decidedly thin, and the design of the hardware buttons at the base is very slick. If you’ve been waiting for the first “mainstream” Android device – thinking HTC’s offerings to-date have been a little too “business” in their design – then the Samsung I7500 could be the device for you.

The fact that a company without any experience in the Phone industry and using a network which is a lot smaller than AT&T has sold more than 1 million Android phones seems to me is a very good sign of how healthy this new OS is. Will it win the race against the iPhone? It’s early to say but one thing is for sure, it’s even now when it still young a very good adversary for the iPhone and it has done what Microsoft have not done with a single phone in many years.
