Swype Replaces Type On Verzion Samsung Omnia II

A little over a year ago Chris posted a piece about the Swype software, and yet here is Swype again attempting to change consumers’ perspectives on typing using software keyboards. Since my introduction to software keyboards came in the form of the near-microscopic keys in Windows Mobile 6.0, I was slow to adopt the prediction-correction-ridden virtual-boards. The correction software on even the iPhone still throws me for a loop, and yet Samsung decides to turn convention on its head to welcome the 2009 holiday season with Swype on the Samsung Omnia II for Verizon.

I’ve been using SoftMaker Office for years and have found it to be a “must have” program on my devices especially if you do a lot of writing and want (or need) the ability to use all of the formatting that is available in Word and not available in the mobile version.

This is just a quick reminder that Softmaker’s special sale for their office applications on Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) ends two days from now. They are offering TextMaker 2008, PlanMaker 2008, and SoftMaker Presentations 2008 for Windows Mobile for $9.99 each.

When I got my first smartphone I found it a very hard transition from a touch screen device. That is until I was led to use SBSH Facade. Photoshop.com For iPhone

This is Adobe’s version of Photoshop for the iPhone. Well, that’s what they call it anyway. It’s not really the big advanced photo editor we know on Windows and Macs. It’s more of a basic photo editor for editing things like color intensity, adding some filters, and so on. It also allows you to sign in with your

photoshop.com account and upload your edited pictures.

It’s free in the app store. It’s kind of useful if your pictures don’t come out as clear, too dark, or too bright.

Add Network Support to Windows Live Movie Maker

Windows Live Movie Maker has been finally released. Some users have found that you can import files into Movie Maker if they are located in the network. But there is a workaround to overwrite this.

To run the roadblock, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker and add a DWORD value named AllowNetworkFiles. Afterwards, simply double-click it and set its data to either 0 (disabled) or 1 (enabled).

Paint .NET using DirectWrite

If you don’t have the money to buy Adobe Photo Shop then you will be happy to know that Paint .NET is free and an excellent tool capable of replacing Photo Shop in most of the tasks. Today I read at Windows Experience Blog that the latest version of this tool started to use DirectWrite, the latest update in the DirectX family.

DirectWrite is one of the new additions to the DirectX family of APIs in Windows 7. DirectWrite enables better readability, adds support for a large variety of languages and scripts, and in conjunction with Direct2D provides superior rendering performance for Windows applications. Applications can also use DirectWrite with GDI and carry forward existing investments in the Win32 code base. You can read more about DirectWrite here.

Google Maps Mobilizes Layers

Google has released a new version of Google Maps and the app is as lightning quick as ever with some major improvements. The biggest addition is Layers.

There are several new functions or layers that include Wikipedia, Transit, and Traffic. If I’m visiting a new city and turn on Wikipedia, any little squares that appear on the map mean condensed Wikipedia articles are available about the immediate area. When I tap a square with a “W”, the article opens within Google Maps instead of its own browser window. I’m also ecstatic that the crash reports, which can be tapped for more information, are actually accurate! And if I remember correctly, copy-paste would not work within Google Maps on my WinMo phone before this update. Now, I can copy an address from SkyFire and paste it into a search field in Google Maps with no problems.

LG Windows Mobile App Store

Since my main handset is a WinMo-running HTC Tilt, I’m looking forward to trying out LG’s sampling of Windows Mobile applications. From different categories all the way down to the all-important “Free” category, LG’s app store seems to have all its basis covered.

LG has launched an application store for their Windows Mobile phones, with a catalogue of 1400 tested apps, which LG hopes to expand to 2000 by the end of the year. Initially aimed at the Asia Pacific region, the service will first be offered in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia and will reach Europe and the South America by the end of this year.

While stateside users can browse through the site, registration is limited to our overseas mobile kindred. I’ll be keeping close eye out for when LG expands their user pool westward, but until then applications like Tipster, SPB software, and Ilium’s offerings many of the listed apps can be found elsewhere on the interwebs.

SkyFire Software Update

A small upgrade has been made by the SkyFire team to their 1.0 release of the mobile browser this week. The most significant improvement of the browser, now at version 1.0.0.12113 for Windows Mobile touch and non-touch handsets with a newer version for our Symbian kindred, is a reduced memory footprint. For those of us with handsets that are showing their age via lack of capacity, the SkyFire team has streamlined their browser to eliminate those pesky low memory errors.

I’m also ecstatic over reconnections being more reliable! Even after browser runs in the background for a while, the moment I switch back to SkyFire it has reconnected to that same site instantly. It beats the beta version where the browser would return to the SkyFire homepage after an accidental disconnect.

The zoom buttons disappearing and reappearing in a timely fashion was never a stand-out issue for me, but I’m glad that the general 1.0 release fixed the navigation buttons hanging out in the top right corner even when they shouldn’t be. Plus, SkyFire is now more reliable in maintaining the all-haloed Default Browser spot on my handset. No more accidental sojourns with Pocket Internet Explorer. Sorry Microsoft.
