It should be news to no one that most parts of our economy are not doing very well. That situation makes it especially tough on those of us that crave the latest and greatest mobility gadgets.

I’ve been a gadget collector for my entire adult life. From a mobility point of view, I’ve been a very satisfied Table PC owner and user since late 2002 when they were first released. Unlike many of my friends and peers, I keep my gadgets a bit longer. The Tablet PCs that I’ve owned include: a Compaq TC1000, an HP TC1100 and most recently a Lenovo X60 Tablet.

I’ve started looking at e-book readers and UMPCs to either replace and/or supplement my nearly three year old Lenovo X60 Tablet. I want a device that allows me to do two things very well: browse the internet and read e-books. Additionally, it would be nice to occasionally listen to my digital music collection.

So what did I do?

Now this is a rumor that has LEGS! Even though there is NO CONFIRMATION AT ALL from Apple, the industry is taking for granted that Apple’s Giant iPod Netbook Thingie (Now dubbed by popular acclaim the Apple Tablet) will be a reality, will be a reality SOON, and will be wildly successful. Based on those three shots in the dark, there is a wave of Tablet netbooks and notebooks coming.

Digitimes, our favorite Taiwanese hardware rumor mill, is reporting that Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell (already reported here by our resident TabletPC expert ctitanic) and Micro-Star International (MSI) are all scrambling to get new tablet PCs out early in 2010. All seem to be in around-abouts the 10 inch screen size that the Apple tablet is said to sport.

Tablets netbooks also seem destined to be some of the first appearances of Intel’s successor to the Diamondville Atom platform, Pinetrail. The chipset will be used by MSI in a 10-inch tablet netbook slated to debut in early 2010 and by a Tablet netbook from HP due in April or May 2010 (THAT rumor has me a bit excited).

Tablet netbooks have already been released by Gigabyte and Asus (among others) with more models on the way from each to take advantage of Windows 7 touch features.

Digitimes is defining Tablet PCs as encompassing full size Tablet notebooks, 10 inch or less Tablet netbooks and 4- to 6-inch touchscreen MIDs. If the Apple Tablet enjoys iPhone/iPod Touch level success and acceptance and if Windows 7 is as touch-friendly as has been claimed, we could rapidly be finding touchscreen and tablet notebooks to be the norm rather then the exception.

Dell and Intel are just the latest examples of a growing trend. MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen said he, too, has heard rumors about not just Dell, but also handset makers Nokia and HTC delivering tablets by end of first quarter 2010.

Wired.com also points that this and the rumor about Apple’s Tablet PC may be a sign of 2010 being a good year for the Tablet PC Technology. Well, I would be extremely happy to see that. It’s not secret that I love TabletPCs. Is not it? I also should add that the release of Windows 7 is a very important factor that could contribute to make 2010 the year of the Tablet PCs.

Those who never has seen an outdoor display won’t understand what we are talking about. This is something that you have to see it to believe it. The difference between an outdoor display and a regular display is like day and night. So, if you are an outdoor enthusiast or if feeding your family depends on using a mobile pc outdoor, I would recommend you to find a device with an outdoor display.

Office Online Blog recently published an article from Bill Gates where he explains how useful is Office for him. The most important tool for him is Outlook, but look what he says about his Tablet PC and OneNote.

I always take a lot of notes about ideas to think about or things to follow up on. I try to bring my Tablet PC to meetings as often as possible so that I can use OneNote 2007 to write notes in ink that can later be searched or converted to text. Even if I forget my Tablet, I can scan a document or piece of paper and add that image to OneNote. One of the nice new features in OneNote 2007 is that it automatically recognizes the text in those scanned documents, so that it’s easy to search for them later.

I love OneNote too.

But, that’s not as important as the OS that will be used in this tablet… Android! I don’t know why but it seems to me that in 5 years we all are going to see Android as an alternative selecting what OS we are going to be installing in our PCs.

Researchers estimate the Conficker worm has infected millions of computers since January. The Conficker worm tries to take advantage of a problem with Windows called MS08-067 to quietly install itself and spread by copying itself into shared folders on networks and by infecting USB devices such as memory sticks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware’s creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other computers on the same network.

So what can you do? Make sure you have automatic updates turned on AND your antivirus software is up-to-date!

Do I have your attention? All the above could be yours if you participate in this contest and of course, you are the winner. All you need is some programming skills to create an application for Tablet PC like the one requested in the contest.

The object of the Tablet Accessibility Award is to create a new education application that uses Tablet technology while expanding the possibilities about how a user interacts with the computer. The application should reflect the Imagine Cup theme, “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today,” as it relates to the United Nations Millennium Goal of Universal Education.

Microsoft believes Tablet technology can contribute significantly to learning (for both the educator and the learner). There are great examples of the use of Tablet in learning in 1:1 computing, 1: many computing, and distance learning. More work is needed, and more creativity and ingenuity is required. In this Award, students will explore the innovative use of Tablet to expand the possibilities of accessible learning of persons with physical and or cognitive disabilities limitations.
