Before we get to the good stuff I should warn you that hacking your iPhone WILL void your warranty and following these instructions could very well get you a higher than normal bill from AT&T or whoever your carrier is that does not support iPhone tethering officially. You could potentially screw up your phone and if you follow these steps, iPhone MVP and myself are NOT liable for anything you screw up.

This tutorial is for those of you who are NOT currently jailbroken. I have a separate tutorial for those already jailbroken right here. After you complete these steps, you will be jailbroken, unlocked, and have tethering enabled. This is everything you will ever need in your iPhone life! Everything you need is just past the break!

This explains it all! AT&T’s lack of MMS, tethering, all the cool stuff that international carriers already have ready even though the iPhone 3G S does not go on sale until Friday. There is one thing that I really don’t like about the mainstream media’s tech coverage is that they don’t get everything right. They say that the iPhone 3G is not HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) compatible. That is not entirely true. We get HSPA on the 3G however the 3G S is faster, hence the extra S! The 3G gets 3.6 Mbps (theoretical) and the 3G S gets 7.2 (again, theoretical). The network is the problem, the iPhone uses a lot of network capacity and now with push notifications, MMS, streaming video, and tethering we will be using up more than ever. AT&T’s data network is already the most strained in the country and things are only going to get worse with the $99 iPhone 3G plus the 3G S using more bandwidth with the faster speeds things could get interesting for AT&T’s engineers.

Hit up the link below if you want the full USA Today rundown.

With the iPhone 3G’s significantly faster data transfer rates and ability to perform voice and data functions simultaneously, potential buyers have become intoxicated with the idea of tethering the device: using it as a cellular modem for laptops — a service AT&T and other carriers offer for many other portable phones. iPhone Atlas has learned, however, that AT&T will not be offering tethering capabilities for the iPhone 3G.
