Iris Mobile Browser v1.1.8: A Review

A big thank you to @gigajosh for the recommendation on NetFront mobile browser from Access Company because it’s how I found the Iris mobile browser by Torch Mobile. While I will review NetFront before the end of its beta phase, but for now, I’ll dive into Iris.

For an installation file larger than SkyFire 1.0, clocking in at 3.35 MB versus SkyFire’s 679 KB, Iris v1.1.8 was a quick install on my AT&T Tilt running WinMo 6.1. After opening faster than any other mobile browser I’ve used, I was ecstatic to find out that the tabbed browsing in Iris is quick and responsive! Iris gives the user full control over tabs and doesn’t open tabs automatically in the background, thank goodness. There’s even an overall view of all currently open tabs where I was able to quickly flip back and forth between tabs much like the “Cover Flow” view in iTunes but on a much smaller scale. The browser history is displayed in the same way.

Iris Browser 1.1.0

It was a while back when I posted and tried the Iris browser. I liked it a lot but it had some more tweaking left to be done before I would seriously consider it being my go to browser of choice. Well, it may well be close to that point for me. During the past year they have done a lot of “tweaking” and have released a stable version of the Iris Browser 1.1.0 for download!

We now see a myriad of new features including support for the Flash Lite ActiveX control, big performance gains, reduced memory usage, preliminary RSS and SVG support, the highest Acid3 score of any shipping mobile browser, and HTC accelerometer support. That is very cool and definitely caught my eye!

Iris Browser Beta 2 for Windows Mobile

There is a NEW version of the Iris Browser and it is pretty good. I have been using it on my Palm 750 and find the experience to be pretty stable. It still needs more work but I think you will enjoy it.

Iris Browser Beta 2, which is now available for free download, has been tested on a variety of Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6 devices, including Classic and Professional editions. A 400 MHz CPU with at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended at this time, though it is known to work well on 200 MHz processors and 64 MB devices.

Iris, it’s not just a flower

The Iris Browser is an alternate choice for a mobile browser that you might like to try. It comes with a built in screen capture tool, a virtual mouse that mimics a desktop mouse, has support for devices with rotating screens, and a built in pop-up blocker. Iris has support for advanced HTML and CSS, as well as multiple windows and tabbed browsing. Iris has support for full screen browsing with movement around the web page via zoom and tap functionality.

This is a preview release and is a free download for Windows Mobile 5 and 6.
