There are hacks and HACKS with upper case. This one is one of those with upper case. The news was posted at GottabeMobile but the pictures can be seen in this other site. A Sony UX where the owner has change everything that could be changed and replaced and even more.

Kohjinsha PA review

Pocketables has posted a very interesting review about the Kohjinsha PA. After ready it I arrived to this conclusion: Beauty is a very complicate criteria. I find the Series PA exterior design attractive.

From a usability standpoint, the Kohjinsha PA series packs a lot of function into a portable package weighing just 14.1 ounces. The convertible form factor is versatile and encourages a wide range of usage scenarios, while Windows XP makes it a fairly robust system to carry around in a pocket. Unfortunately, because of its high price, unique aesthetics, and limited RAM, I don’t think the PA will be able to find success in the already niche market of UMPCs and MIDs.

UMPC-891A, a new 8.9” Tablet (?)

I put a question mark on Tablet because the UMPC-891A comes with just Windows XP and it’s known yet if it’s Windows Touch Compliant, let’s hope it’s.

The price, according to what Engadget is reporting, is around the price Microsoft dreamed for the first generation of UMPC released about 2 years ago. Are we witnessing a resurrection of the UMPCs?

Few notes about W7 in a Viliv X70

Thanks to Dynamism I had the chance of testing a Viliv x70 and even more, install W7 on it. This is not a guide, these are just few notes about the process.

The device has only one USB port, buy a little USB port where you can connect your USB Mouse, keyboard and a bootable USB Memory stick with Windows 7. I used this tool to prepare the USB Memory.
Download from Viliv all drivers and uncompress them in a folder in your bootable USB. Windows 7 wont recognize the WiFi and the Touch Screen. This is why is so important to have the WiFi driver ready. The touch screen driver that I recommend is the eGalax Beta for W7. Still this is not a HID and as result Windows 7 will not recognize this device as a Tablet PC or a device with a digitizer. This means that you will miss some of the touch features that we love very much from Windows 7.
To boot from the USB, turn on the unit holding pressed the button B. Using the Joystick select the option of booting from the USB.
To install W7 select the 24 Gb unit, click in advance, and format.
When the installation of W7 is done, install the WiFi, reboot and run windows update. Once you have installed the updates then install the touch screen driver. Check the device manager, you will find a device marked with !, update the driver using the files in the folder EC_IO downloaded from Viliv.
Keep installing the rest of the software download the Viliv. For CubeUI you will need to download Air from Adobe.

Windows 7 Index for the Viliv x70. Average 3.48

As comparison point here is the Index for the Fujitsu P1610. Average 3.02

The Viliv X70 overall performs better than my P1610 with a better CPU. The Viliv X70 only needs one thing, a HID for the touch screen . What a crime to have a wonderful device like this no using fully all Touch features of Windows 7 and Office (No ink support).

Crime and punishment

The Crime: Install Windows XP Home Edition in a Viliv X70. Punishment: Keep using it without enjoying all the features touch relative available in Windows 7.

The device performs very well, here is the Crystalmark score:

One of the best scores I have seen thanks to a super fast SSD. It’s without any doubt faster than my P1610. Thanks God, I have been authorized to install W7 in this demo device and I’ll do it tomorrow ending my punishment period.

My new e-book reader, my new UMPC, my old Tablet PC

It should be news to no one that most parts of our economy are not doing very well. That situation makes it especially tough on those of us that crave the latest and greatest mobility gadgets.

I’ve been a gadget collector for my entire adult life. From a mobility point of view, I’ve been a very satisfied Table PC owner and user since late 2002 when they were first released. Unlike many of my friends and peers, I keep my gadgets a bit longer. The Tablet PCs that I’ve owned include: a Compaq TC1000, an HP TC1100 and most recently a Lenovo X60 Tablet.

I’ve started looking at e-book readers and UMPCs to either replace and/or supplement my nearly three year old Lenovo X60 Tablet. I want a device that allows me to do two things very well: browse the internet and read e-books. Additionally, it would be nice to occasionally listen to my digital music collection.

So what did I do?

Viliv X70, first Impressions

I received a Viliv X70 review from Dynamism and I have prepared a short video for my Spanish site I the video has subtitles in English, so do not worry I you wont have to learn Spanish.

So far, the design is what have impressed me most of all. This UMPC looks really good, the space around the screen is well utilized and as result the device looks smaller than other devices with the same screen size.

Hollywood loves the Sony VAIO UX series

This is something that I have been noticing since a long time ago: The Sony VAIO UX being shown in many movies or series. Apparently I was not the only one that have seen that, here is what UMPC Portal posted today:

Over the years, the Sony VAIO UX series has appeared in a surprising number of films and music videos, often toted as a futuristic high-tech gadget, or a high-class luxury device. Viliv x70, what a beauty…

The Viliv x70 is one of the best design I have seen in an UMPC later and the performance is not bad either. The only thing I don’t like is that is using XP Home instead of XP TabletPC 2005 Edition. But this is something that with W7 release can be fixed. You can buy this beauty at Dynamism where they are running some very good promotions.

New Kohjinsha UMPC Coming

UMPC Portal is reporting that Kohjinsha is breaking it’s recent silence with a new UMPC, the SK3, designed to run Windows 7. The device looks great from the pictures (all serious information appears to still be in Japanese) and will be available in Japan ~~by the end of the month~~ today.

I came very close to buying a Kohjinsha device some months ago but it ended up being pushed off my wishlist by other more mainstream small touchscreen devices (like my current main Netbook, the Gigabyte M912M). However, the look of this one, especially presented like a Franklin planner on serious steroids as it is here, is very appealing to me. It seems like it is trying to fill the no-man’s land between MID and Netbook…if such a place actually exists. The Windows 7 angle also sounds interesting. Maybe this will be a winner for Kohjinsha and get them back on the Euro/US UMPC map.

Mobile Reporting Kit

Blogging has became a way of life for many and when this happens you have to become creative and like in any other job arm yourself with a set of tools that will allow you to be the best. Because that’s what is it about. People pay you for blogging because you are the best or at least one of the best.

My fellow blogger Steve from UMPCPortal has posted a very good article about his experiences streaming live video for his blog. It’s really interesting to see how he has managed to create a fully portable/mobile solution using an UMPC.

I spent some time testing different webcams, microphones and configurations and have come up with a 2KG setup that will allow you to do live, mobile broadcasting over Ustream with reasonable quality. The total cost of the solution is under $1000 and the setup can not only be used for live streaming but can be used as a complete Ultra Mobile live blogging solution.
