Upgrading a Compaq/HP Mini 311

One of the best parts of any netbook is the ability to tinker with it, upgrading the hardware and trying all sorts of strange software and OS cocktails on it. Some netbook vendors make this difficult for the user, while others make it so easy it is almost a crime NOT to spend a few dollars and a little time upgrading your netbook.

An example of one of the easiest to upgrade is the Compaq/HP Mini 311, the 11.6 inch netbook rocking an Nvidia ION/Atom mix. At first modders were disappointed when HP announced that the 1GB of RAM that the device ships with would be soldered in place, a favorite tactic used by companies to ensure that when you want more power, you have to buy a bigger netbook. However once the device shipped, it was discovered that there is a SECOND RAM slot that is incredibly easy to access, allowing you to add a 2GB RAM stick to bring the device up to 3GB, more than enough to run Windows 7 or anything else you want. Microsoft has begun to release more information about upgrading existing Windows Mobile phones to 6.5….and it ain’t pretty. As most of us who remember the bloodbath trying to get upgrades from Windows Mobile 5 to 6 anticipated, as far as Redmond is concerned ya can’t get there from here.

First of all, WinMo 5 or 6 phones? Forget about it, don’t even bother asking unless you want to hear a Microsoft Customer Service Rep laughing hysterically at you. Anyway, if you are still running Windows Mobile 5, it is time for a new phone anyway. Really, c’mon. Pull the trigger already.

Windows Mobile 6.1? SOME of you may have a chance….but not many of you. Read on to get the 411, or 911, depending.

3.1 Already???

Yes sports fans, iPhone OS v3.1 has already been released to beta and is available to you hardy souls for upgrade.

What has been changed in 3.1?

Beats me. Nobody has much of a clue yet, though some ~~suckers~~ early adopters are already reporting that there is a new option to save copies of video from the editing suite.

Care to take the new shiny for a beta spin? If so, comment and let us know what surprises (or disappointments) you find.

The Power of the Blog…Never Underestimate it!

The AT&T iPhone 3G users out there were ~~vocal~~ VERY VOCAL when they found out that a shiny new iPhone 3G S would cost them $100 more than their 3G did because of their early renewal. Well, AT&T has heard the blogging and twittering masses and is offering an olive branch so to speak for all iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in the months of July, August, or September and will all those customers to upgrade to the iPhone 3G S for the 2 year price. Now, a new 2 year contract is required, so if you take advantage of this deal, we DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT want to hear you all b****ing next year when Apple introduces the 4th gen iPhone when you all are still locked into another contract and you don’t get the same deal next year.

Recent AT&T ROM Upgrades

I thought I would just pass this on (again) for those of you that might have missed these announcements. There are two ROM upgrades that AT&T has announced. The HTC FUZE upgrade has been widely reported on a number of sites but in case you somehow missed it, you can get it here. The landing page provides additional detail and instructions.

Simultaneously, LG has officially released the LG Incite ROM upgrade which is now available for download from the LG support site. This has not been widely reported but is a great upgrade for users of this model. So how do you get the upgrade for the incite? Click this link: http://mobilephones.us.lge.com/support.aspx then follow these instructions:

Select AT&T for Carrier, Select Incite for model,

Click LG Incite software update button in far right column

Download to a folder of your choice, run and follow the directions

Have You Updated Your AT&T Palm Treo 750 to WM6?

Does my device have a WM6.1 upgrade available?

When someone asks me if a device they have has a Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade available, invariably I go to Jason Langridge’s WebLog by entering this link: Upgrades

Jason has been terrific about publishing what devices have received upgrades and he always adds the “tag” upgrade. So if you want to know if a device has an upgrade available, by clicking on that link you get to see the list of all articles he has done to find all the 6.1 upgrades.
