Ilium has been sharing some free software for Windows Mobile devices (and Palm OS, your Windows PC, UMPC and Tablet PC) for quite some time. It’s completely free and all of them are worth having in your arsenal of programs.

Vulnerability in Microsoft Video ActiveX

Microsoft has released a Security Advisory about a vulnerability in Microsoft video ActiveX.

Microsoft is investigating a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Video ActiveX Control. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. When using Internet Explorer, code execution is remote and may not require any user intervention.

We are aware of attacks attempting to exploit the vulnerability.

Our investigation has shown that there are no by-design uses for this ActiveX Control in Internet Explorer which includes all of the Class Identifiers within the msvidctl.dll that hosts this ActiveX Control. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 customers, Microsoft is recommending removing support for this ActiveX Control within Internet Explorer using all the Class Identifiers listed in the Workaround section. Though unaffected by this vulnerability, Microsoft is recommending that Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 customers remove support for this ActiveX Control within Internet Explorer using the same Class Identifiers as a defense-in-depth measure.

Better with Windows?

Has Asus given up on being Linux’s vanguard in the consumer marketplace? Back when the Eee 701 was the new hotness it came with Linux , and it was widely considered a sure thing that such netbooks would popularize Linux in the real world. Companies like Asus were seen as Open Source saviors who would heavily promote Linux as a cheaper, less bloated alternative to Windows software for weaker machines.

Guess not.

A new campaign has been started, in which a somewhat amateurish looking website extols the fact that Eee PCs run better with Windows using mostly 701s in the demo video. Of course when this campaign first went public there was an outcry across the Linux blogosphere calling it a hoax…but Asus quickly owned up to it being legit. However, the site itself appears to be the work of an employee of Arbitron, a PR firm with a history with Microsoft (hence why it looks like something circa 1997), so it is likely Asus didn’t do much connected to the site save for give their permission. No Asus branding or logo appears anywhere except in the video.

Still, if Asus is continuing to defect from the Open Source camp on a large scale and will continue to draw back from putting Linux on netbooks in the factory, could they also be stroking Redmond in advance of the Windows 7 netbook release. I am sure some heavy vendor agitation got MS to lift the “3 Windows Only” spiking of their entry level Win7 release.

Check out the demo video at the site…so what do you think…better with Windows? I am a big MS fanboy by and large, but my Asus Eee 701? Better with Ubuntu NBR, actually.

Long Zheng had this video up today that was just terrific and I wanted to make sure that you had the opportunity to watch it especially if you are a Windows enthusiast.

Once in a while we all, as Windows enthusiasts, come up with those great ideas the next version got to have. Some put it in writing, some vote (shameless plug), some Photoshop mockups, but rarely do we get concept videos as elaborate as Cullen Dudas’ “Copenhagen” user experience video.

Conficker Worm – Are you protected?

All too often we become complacent with all that we do and forget the most basic tasks to guarantee security. Most, if not all, of you have heard of the Conficker Worm. This worm HAS infected millions of computers since January and if you have an anti-virus program that is NOT up to date with the latest patches, you are at serious risk. In a recent HP article, they said:

Researchers estimate the Conficker worm has infected millions of computers since January. The Conficker worm tries to take advantage of a problem with Windows called MS08-067 to quietly install itself and spread by copying itself into shared folders on networks and by infecting USB devices such as memory sticks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware’s creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other computers on the same network.

So what can you do? Make sure you have automatic updates turned on AND your antivirus software is up-to-date!

FingerPoint for the Omnia

So if you don’t like it, make your own!

In fact that is what an Omnia user did when he got tired of the application launcher on the Samsung Omnia. So he decided to write his own and I think it is very cool! Called FingerPoint, it is a sleek application launcher that is very finger touch friendly (as you watch the video you will see just how friendly it is).

So you like it huh? Well if you have an Omnia then you just might want a copy and you can get it for FREE here.

Teach Spanish to your recognizer

Speaking in English Tablet PC owners are lucky. We have been using the best handwriting recognition software available in the market for two years. In two years we have been able to train our TabletPCs to recognize virtually 99.99% of the time what ever we “draw” in our TIP. But the rest of the owners speaking other languages do not have this option available. The recognition is there and it’s good but there is not any way to train (personalize) it to be better.

Well apparently this is going to change with W7.

The handwriting personalization seems that will be available for other languages! That’s a real good news. Like many of you may know I live in a dual world writing in two languages and it was always sad for me to experience the difference between both recognitions, English and Spanish. Thanks to the personalization available in my English recognizer the recognition on this one was almost perfect but every time I had to write in Spanish I suffered seeing that the recognition % was not the same due to the lack of personalization in this other language. With W7 this has changed! I hope that this feature stays up to RTM version! Are you listening Microsoft!

There is a NEW twhirl

I generally use TweetDeck because I really like the interface but here is one that you should try by Loic Le Meur. He has just released a NEW version of Twhirl and so far, I like it. In fact, I like it a lot.

So what is twhirl?

twhirl is a social software desktop client, based on the Adobe AIR platform.

Some of twhirl’s features:

runs on both Windows (2000/XP/Vista) and Mac OSX
connects to multiple Twitter, laconi.ca, Friendfeed and Seesmic accounts
displays notifications for new messages
shorten long URLs (using bit.ly, snurl, twurl or is.gd)

Live Search Mobile Updated

Windows Live Search has been upgraded (current version number 4.0.12158.1) and continues to give quick access to directions (with a cool Track Me Using GPS option!), traffic conditions, movie times, gas prices, and the Windows Live Web search engine.

If you have not tried it yet, you should just download the updated client located under MENU on the main page! If you have never tried it at all then navigate to http://wls.live.com on your phone to get started. It is FREE and terrific!

The Apple Tax

Paul Thurrott has posted at his blog a very nice article or note about what Microsoft calls Apple Tax.

There are two tables created by Microsoft to illustrate the whole concept. After checking those tables the only thing that I can say is that with the same amount of money that you spend in a Mac, you buy a really powerful PC. Just in HDD you get twice the space for the same money. You get 30% of more RAM and in one case even a Blue-Ray Driver or a TV Tuner.
